Song of the Month Club - January 2017

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. Instrumentals are fine, but songs with vocals are even better. A bad vocal is better than no vocal, so if you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

I would like to remind everyone of rule no. 1 of the club*. Last month most people dumped their track and neglected to give feedback. Not cool.

I actually did the opposite last month, somehow. I'll see if I can do both this go 'round. I blame something that rhymes with dump.

  • It has been six month since my last thing here. Sorry no vocals again but Ive got some astronaut and whale samples. Bass and lead courtesy of DRC, weirdness from AnalogKit (made a public patch called Playground) and some fun effecting, mixing, mastering etc with my new fabfilters in Auria Pro. Id call it cinematic ambience, enjoy!

There is a yt video link in the description for anyone interested in my Takete dabblings

You get extra points for that. As for blame, must everything be Trump's fault?

  • must everything be Trump's fault?

I sure hope not. Time will tell.

    Only Joking boys!...... :D

  • Shame about that because there were some crackers last month. Sorry I wasn't around but if I could just very quickly say that some highlights were @Igneous1 you achieved the flow, reeks of happiness and joy. Love the cake (my two are salivating). @trackedout combining some yahoo country freedom with a stodgy methodical umpah band was cool. @orchardman tasty thigh of turkey there my friend. Very refreshing to hear you sing and I'd say you two have a great year ahead caressing those vocals out together. Nice. @JohnnyGoodyear finishing off last term with your sad song. Got the OD reference artwork before I listened and did so with an anvil in my throat. Musically....... punk. Yeah, I hear the Mods in that straight bass line chug. "A" fucking star sir. And to our gaffer @richardyot who deserves a special mention. How the hell you keep banging out top songs, especially with all the terrible stuff happening around you, is beyond me. Am I hearing less fx added to your voice. There seems far more air and space. Bloody hell, when the harmonies kicked in. Yum. Thought I was back at a Teenage Fanclub gig. Catchy, as usual. Got the knack you have. 2016 will be pivotal in your song writing I feel. A tough one but it is credit to you that are still flying high sir. Cheers.

All unique, enjoyable tunes. Good one all.

To all you that didn't play ball........ you're more insane that me. Mmmm, No you're not. Some bloody brilliant stuff last month on our very own, exclusive radio show. Please support by throwing some words down. The head DJ deserves it. :)

Whoops. And the thieves that ripped off your gear? Still on tube food?

  • Folks, just added my feedback for last month...(woops!). This month's tune from me is a sort of weird alchemy created by feeding drums, bass and clean guitar through a newly purchased TapDelay (love this app!). Strange how an app purchase can take an idea in a whole new direction. Narrative is about road tripping, listening to van halen, partaking in menage a trois and generally veering to the dark side :) .

Also, I'll mention somewhat tail between my legs that I'm going camping for a couple of weeks from tomorrow so my feedback will be towards the bottom of the month. Happy January everyone!

  • Here's a new version of 'Eva', all done in FL Studio Mobile (v3.1.8) and mastered on the desktop:

  • @Richtowns. Your piece has a really swampy, sci-fi unsettled vibe to it. I appreciate the experimentation you did with effects.

@studs1966. Brave man taking on a classic like stairway to heaven. I felt like the melody lended itself quite well to the dub genre. The tune had a nice groove to it. The mix had a lot of energy in the low to mid range that washed out some of the mids and highs.

@trackedout. Nice raw sound. The chord progression and vox reminded me of Radiohead. Weird glitch sound at :46 that didn't sound like something you wanted there on purpose, but maybe you did. :)

@marliess. Awesome pic. :) Nice clean mix. The lyrics are a steady stream of changing ideas. Catchy groove. The instrumental parts and vocals complement each other nicely. Nice one.

@Igneous1. This has a nice chilled out vibe to it. Love the sounds and the melodies. The leads had a nice far off quality to them. Take you to a different place. Mixwise, this was a little bass heavy to my ears.

  • Like @Richtowns I'm in the song every 6 months club. Work quiets down a bit this time of year and I was able to put something together. Any and all feedback welcome.

How many times have people used a pen or paintbrush because they couldn’t pull the trigger? (Virginia Woolf)

Another love song disguised as a suicide note (words beneath the bump).

    This Living

And I want you to know
    I can’t comprehend it
    I can barely stand up
let alone stand to end it

    the day is disappeared
into the pocket of the blues
here comes the night coming done
    wearing new shoes

they were stolen from the feet
    of a land-locked sad sailor
    lost between decisions
as though they were his jailer

    long after midnight
    the dogs are all dead
I’m going to tell that damn sailor
about the love that you said

    would never be holy
    or subject to time
    worse than all that
    would never be mine

and when he’s done with consoling me
    and the stars go out
    we’ll drink to my health
and we’ll end this long drought

    of living.

  • @ecamburn hey thanks . its is very basic raw . I'm glad you enjoyed it. And your right I didnt purposely scratch my mic. But I have this thing about editing . I do my stuff live and it just forces me to make less mistakes . make my live much more interesting

  • @studs1966 very solid bass driving the whole thing. Great idea muting bass out for a sec makes you want it more although I wish it had vox

  • @JohnnyGoodyear I'm diving the drums sounds and the delay on vox is almost close enough for reverbe. You always track very well good job

  • @JohnnyGoodyear that's somber my man. The picture and byline suggest some pain sits behind this one and that certainly came through. I dug the spare feel to the tune. The drums were really nicely done. Had the feel of a live drummer, and brushes no less.

  • @Richtowns Jesus! That deep bass, rammed full of good honest darkness stripped the flesh from my railings. And they're all false! The rhythm alternating, skipping in fact from side to side is gorgeous. Like a drummers tennis match. Keith Moon looked good in his Wimbledon whites I thought. Sometimes, that beat, any main beat, hitting directly into one ear can sound too harsh but you've softened/muffled it enough and it's a good shout. I've knicked it and is the first entry into my "stolen ideas wee black book" this year. Cheers.

The sections without the beat leave an ache inside (lovely) and are a perfect break before the drums return. An expert at those samples aren't you? Yeah, they work seamlessly and add that air of space and big mammals giving birth while maintaining that simmering threat underneath. A good friend of mine got me into Nick Cave not long back and I can hear the dark one crooning on this. :)

  • Before I hit the sack, I wanted to show what I think is the future. Someone commented on another thread a while back that there weren't any good, "young" rock n roll bands anymore. I wanted to keep these all to myself because I love them deeply but they are going to explode soon and already on the radio. If you haven't heard them before, turn it up and let your ears bleed with the new punk. You heard it here first, down in the hot tub. Lucky buggers. :) Please you guitarists. How does he get that sound on the rhythm guitar on the left side. I've tried using bit seduction, two helpings on max but can't get it. Cheers.

  • @bluepunk please, steel away! you have fully paid up in lip service! Thanks for the kind words. The ping-pong-i-ness is courtesy of a Timeless2 present in Auria and the bass is from DRC, a lighweight rival to Model 15 on a good day, maybe.

  • They rock don't they? What'd you mean, you haven't listened yet? ;) Those young upstart nunsters have definitely put the "fuck you factor" back into music I feel. :)

Far too long. Anything more than two minutes is velvet lounge music these days.....

...but, yeah, good energy. And I like the title :)

Thank you. Can go to work knowing someone else knows. Agreed and what I find fascinating with this word "Tulip" is how the meaning appears to change when used all on it's lonesome. From beautiful red bulbous flower to something less appealing. The title sticks, memorable. Daffodil has a similar effect. Amorphophallus titanium doesn't :)
