@orchardman A new sound for a new year. Exciting. I take it from your New Orleans comment that it won't be Siouxsie influenced then Do you need a month pass into the Bromley Contingent for some face to face? I can hear that someone has been tightening their snare skin. Loving that variation in its dynamics and that wee ghost flick. You two took me there, to that club. As the crowd chatted at both ends of your bar, I was listening, appreciating your music. Blindfolded though. I didn't want you, the performers, to "See that guilty look in my eye." A sultry, drunk as a skunk lady flings her arms around my neck for stability. Her knees buckle when you kick the bass in at 2.14 am. She slides to the floor seconds later because your snare crack made her. That's good stuff there because the rhythm section, turn up the heat at the same time.
It works. Transported me right there to those beer stained and sticky floors. Brilliantly done. Delightfully sung again. Just be careful over the pond. You know how your music shapes the weather. I will send you a one way ticket back home to the swamps on 1st March. We need you back here for a decent spring. Terrific stuff.
@petermcclard. Woooh. Slow down please. Not so fast. Getting old. What apps/instruments/harps did you use here please Peter? I must be wearing the same headphones as Mister @ecamburn because I echo his comments. Found the same. Music first, words sunk in later. Ah those rhythms are just gorgeous. Had to try tapping them out straight away. Couldn't.
Folk down here know that I'm all into the love/respect thing (wish I could practice that) and I do appreciate your message but personally, when that "happiness" message is spoken, within a song, it doesn't seem to resonate with me as much as a much darker subject matter does. Sung, yes. Definitely. I mean, I love Shiny Happy People because it's sung happily. Infectious. Did enjoy your solo a lot. Punctuated with that tantalising wee drum fill, it flows like a crystal clear stream. Loved it. Drank it. Was a little warm for my taste buds but quenched a raging thirst. Thanks. Love you mate.
Very interesting. I am just getting used to experimenting with MIDI in a big way after years of ambivalence. I just felt in the late '90's & early 2000's that it was fiddy and more trouble than it was worth. The extent I'd use it was just to do simple MIDI controlling of softsynths, period. Now I'm much more open to it.
You using a premade file is cool, especially as it's a cover. Again, it was long because "Stairway" IS long, but since you obviously dig the dub genre I'd be interested in hearing you do some more. Be cool.
@Richtowns, loved the brassy synth riff that begins with the intro. The buzzing soundscape/pad is also interesting. Cinematic ambience indeed! Very cool!
@studs1966, very reminiscent of good old Dread Zeppelin, sans the Elvis-like vocals. Interesting.
@trackedout, very raw, heavy and good dream pop. I found the instrumental to be a little buried, but the style itself is all for creative mixing, so it's not a big deal, really. I liked the way it ends, with a small drum fill.
@marliess, another very well arranged and mixed song of yours. Very funny as well, as the title suggests. Your work is ready for commercial release: I cannot find any production flaws, really. Great riffs, catchy melodies and interesting lyrics: congrats!
@Igneous1, quite accomplished usage of FL Studio: like the fact the rather simple song structure keeps going because of the arrangement subtleties.
@ecamburn, long time no see! Great combination of sampled dialogue with the underlying track. The fast synth arpeggios in the beginning are a very clever arrangement choice, as well as the phrygian synth solo.
@JohnnyGoodyear, your vocals are better each SOTMC iteration! Good, delicate song and great lyrics as usual.
@orchardman, great keyboard intro - I really enjoyed it! The sampled ambient with people talking was very well placed. The vocals are really great, and it's probably the best mix of yours I listened to date. The song itself is good, a hit candidate. Congrats!
@petermcclard, the time signature change of the playback was a very nice touch! Nice lyrics and very clean and good production.
@Marcel, you have the ability of creating very good melodies, and not surprisingly, the best song I listened in SOTMC to date was a collab between you and @LostBoy85. This one is very reminiscent of Duran Duran's 90's work,
which I like a lot. Very good guitar solo!
@Bluepunk, great lyrics as usual, and this one have a 2000's indie rock/post punk crossover feel (think Bloc Party meets Gang Of Four) Perhaps it was the drums. Which by the way, are great!
My new song, and the very first post in Soundcloud since 2017 began! The name of the song is a pun with the Northeast Brazilian rhythm, the Baião, a delicious dish of Northeastern Brazil , the baião de dois (made of rice and beans and cheese curds) and the time signature of the song, 5/4. Video soon (as soon as I find a way to work with 5 different video sources inside LumaFusion).
Enjoy, and have a nice week!
Dimitri.
@Marcel Good on you Marcel. There's a huge Bluepunk cwtch headed your way. Mister Goodyear says these things in a much more intelligent, thoughtful mature way but if I could just add my views on sensing that word - FUCK IT. Shame I mean. There you go.
I feel honoured that you've allowed us into your state of mind at the time of writing this song. Means so much more to me when the writer has had personal experience of the subject matter in their song. You know, when you hear someone sing or say "I love you darling" in a song. Do you? Do you really? I listen to the story and how each word, each letter of those words, is delivered. Can tell. In your song, I can feel the emotion, with every pluck, strum or however you've skilfully played this and they tell a story about the person playing that part. Oh yeah, fuck the language as well. If you feel more comfortable singing about those emotions in YOUR language, please, please do. You've just proved that it's not about grammar or pronunciation, I before e etc, it's about what's in your head, heart and soul that really matters. Gold star from this heathen here. Great, honest work.
Oh yeah. Before I go, could you please pass a message onto your mucker @LostBoy85 Where the fuck is that guitarism song. In fact, don't waste your time Marcel. Just realised where he is. The auditions for xfactor have begun.
Thanks mate. I have lots of Dub stuff, but unfortunately I'm only allowed 1 track per month. As our leader of this thread(& quite rightly so) @richardyot wisely controls what we can put out. It's a very sensible idea, also the song we release would to much for everyone to listen too. I will eventually share more as the months go by. If you want to hear a few more Dub project, just type "Darren (studs1966)" on Soundcloud. It'll have Daz Dub on the title. Take care fella.
Thanks for listening @Bluepunk . I'm embarrassed to admit that this one was mostly done on the computer. Hopefully Richard won't declare me ineligible. Here are the main synths, and I've listed ios synths that would be similar. The main bass comes from a Reaktor synth called Carbon. strng on ios is similar. Most of the lead sounds, including that one around 1:43 came from Dune 2. Probably the closest ios synth to that one is Z3ta. Everything else I have in the works started out in Gadget, so my next songs will be much more ios focused.

@theconnactic . Had to listen to this a couple of times to wrap my head around what was going on rhtymically and melodically. That's not a knock - I enjoy stuff that you have to work at a little bit. The lead guitar work reminded me a lot of Robert Fripp's and Andrian Belew's stuff with King Crimson. The solo around 1:58 is pure Fripp. I really enjoyed everything about this song - the Brazilian rhythms, the accoustic and electric guitar work, the choice of sounds, and the mix. Nice work chief.
Don't worry, we will keep that bit to ourselves. He's probably busy with the big boss getting a banning order signed and approved anyway. Thank you so much for breaking it all down like that. Brilliant. I am as thick as shit with all this but have an insatiable appetite to learn. Information, like you have so kindly taken your time to explain, is very much appreciated by me. Seriously. Thanks I will be popping into the Z3ta store when I work out the combination on my wife's secret safe that I found yesterday, after years of false leads. Clever......but not enough dearest! It's in the eyes.
@ecamburn iOS is not compulsory for SOTMC entries, in fact we generally prefer that songs are created with a Sony Walkman and a ukulele, however everyone's been ignoring that rule so I gave up enforcing it.
I should really, really read the small print. If that's the case then I've still got old recordings of projects(recorded on good old fashioned BASF Chrome Tapes)..... I did when I was using my old Commador Amiga A500 & A1200 using SoundStudio OctaMED driving some old Synth modules via Midi(& samples in the 4 channel)........ I'll have to dig them out. Lol.
I'm not Joking!......... I keep everything I've done over the years......... Good..... or Bad!........
Guilty of this too. Some day those cassettes are going to snap off the reel.
Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. I was going to have a listen to the track, but I understand if you would prefer not get feedback under the circumstances. But remember you are among friends here, even if life is shitty "out there".
Ditto in quantity.
Yes. Sorry to hear that monzo.
Sorry for your loss, Monzo.
@richardyot @JohnnyGoodyear @Bluepunk @theconnactic
Thanks for your kind words guys, I appreciate them, really I do.
Probably a bit raw on reflection, I'll try and come up with something a bit lighter for public consumption.
Thank you, @ecamburn!
@theconnactic Thank you for giving us some more knowledge about your country. Liking these exotic rhythms that the North East of the country bang out. Slightly different in our North East. The time signatures vary depending on how much Newcastle Brown Ale has been consumed by the band..... and audience. The Angelic Upstarts were a good example of this. On a Thursday, that rhythm changes again as you hear the sound of 200,000 Geordies running to collect their benefits! Sepultera tried to cover that urgent panic but even they failed. You're a brilliant guitarist but I'd like to mention your drumming. You have it nailed down so tightly. It's testament to your musical knowledge that you let the drums do what they're supposed to do. Because of this, it allows you to take centre stage with your guitars. They actually highlight your skills I think. Gives a frame for you to paint a picture.
That higher pitched sound at 2.32 sounds like my phone ringing and the headphones had to removed on each play in case someone was about to return home. Uncanny. Can see you've got that vid app sussed. Congrats. Will check out some of them when time.
@Richtowns - about your track - Cinematic ambience indeed! Likeable instrumental! Is that guy a whale? Only joking, must be the astronaut. The track has good atmosphere. I enjoyed listening to it.
@studs1966 - about your track - Nice one! Stairway to Heaven chords in dub reggae, nice. I have nothing much to say about it, exept that it is an enjoyable track.
@trackedout - about your track - Nice mixing and mastering! Good production! Good 'heavy vibe'. Well done.
@marliess - about your track - Sounds good! Good production. Like the double/multiple vocals. Clear production. Perhaps a bit more variation in, or alteration of the main theme might be a good thing.
@theconnactic - Thanks a lot for your kind words about my track, and about your special appreciation of a previous song, a collab between @LostBoy85 and me. (I guess you mean "Kingdom Come". We did two collabs together, but the KC track was more a collaboration. The other track ("Close Your Eyes And See") was Leo singing on top of my instrumental.) Much appreciated!
@Marcel . This does have a nice dreamy feel to it. To my ear, I'm hearing some Pink Floyd sensibilities. Struggled a bit at times to make out the words, but that didn't detract from the listening experience. Dug the guitar solo. Nice one.
Its been a long time since I've posted here. Stepped away from iOS and into Ableton Live for several months.
Here is a track inspired by the upside-down sense of truth all over the news this weekend:
The new news about Korg Gadget coming to Mac got me inspired to open it up again. This was composed in Gadget, midi exported to Ableton Live, sequencing hardware synths: Korg minilogue, Moog MG-1, Roland Juno-106. And my "sampled material" was played from iPhone directly to Mac over USB. That's convenient, need to use that feature more. Fun workflow composing in Gadget and mixing down through hardware.
More feedback from me. What better way to spend a bleak, dank day off in Wales than listening to the SOTMC.
@marcel lots of emotion in this one. Nice intro and I liked the overall sound but for me the vocals had too many effects on them which made the words difficult to understand. Great solo at the end.
@bluepunk great overall sound. You have got this production lark down to a tee. Great lyrics and I loved the conversational style vocals. This one reminded me a bit of John Otway and Wild Willy Barret 'Really Free' which I loved as a kid. Great stuff.
@theconnactic loved the guitar tone on this one and the bass break around the 2:00 mark. You always have the knack of making things interesting by your use of different scales. Really enjoyed.
@gburks interesting new concept. Dance music protest songs. Loved the great use of the vocal samples and the overall sound. One thing, alternative facts aren't falsehoods, they are lies.
My entry for the month, will catch up on feedback shortly.
A couple of notes, I had the bright idea of recording the vocals in the bathroom to get some natural reverb, it certainly worked but was quite hard to tame in the mix. I compress my vocals aggressively so that also really brings up the sound of the room. Not sure I'll do that again... Also I think I can finally post a vocal that hasn't been pitch-fixed at all and it sounds in tune (to my ears anyway, tell me if it's not).
The track is a bit of a mess as I'm not really sure what sound I'm grasping for. One day I will find it.
The vocal melody came to me on the street in North London on New Year's Eve, had to stop on the spot and sing it into my phone in front of random passers-by before I forgot it. Doesn't mean it's any good, but I think I write better melodies away from the instrument or iPad. Then I try and fit music and harmony around them, which I'm getting OK at. Seems to work better for me than writing music first, for now anyway.
