What's cool is I sent your link along to a nineteen year old nephew who lives out in the wilderness here and he not only digs it, but also then sent me a tune he's working on.....which is good....there is hope....
Excellent news. Strange, it was my nephew at University in London who gave me the nod about them late last year. Should be studying anthropology but prefers to check what's new, relevant and occurring musically, up there in the smoke. Suppose that's part of the curriculum. Do hope we get to hear your nephews work at some point. Exciting stuff, for him and us punters.
@studs1966 Bloody hell Studsy, did you swop Paphos beach for the one at Montego Bay by any chance? Strong gear cos did you forget to press stop Could slip ten of my crappy tunes into this monster and still have enough room to gently lower Symphony Number 1 - The Gothic, in by their side!
The original is one of my least favourite songs of all time. Great start, but because of the Caribbean/Dub influence you've stamped on the gates, your version is a lot kinder to the lugs. Dig the bass riff and it holds all together. The echoing drums at 4.25 I enjoyed, and a few more rim shots/high tom fills would give some dynamics. Nice solo there but only just coming through good sir.
@trackedout Brilliant song. Seriously hard hitting in your own, individual mad way. Your slidey intro got me prepared and hot inside, as well as Blue. Thumpingly gorgeous drums highlighted by the bass drum I felt smashing its way through my intestines. It's good to hear your unique vocal tone/delivery, every month and this is right up there on your top shelf. Is that you on the second verse vocal? Good range sir.
Fantastic start to your musical New Year and can't wait to hear where you are this time in 12 months. Just don't get caught next time. The lags would benefit from your clever offerings but not us back here in the Club. A couple of crackles shine bright and that just added to your pop for me.
So the good news for some of you is that we made it out of the swamp. The trouble is we seem to have ended up in New Orleans. Something a bit different from us. A new sound for a new year.
Last Obama Era music post from me:
Thanks for the kind words matey. I've done some nice Soulful House for next month edition. Shame only allowed one track per month. Lol.
Pleasure. Looking forward to hearing that. Any chance you could lower the length of that track back to around 3 months long please. I grew a full beard while I listened to Stairway
Sure.......... Mate!...... I couldn't stop laughing at you comment...... Very funny........ The Mrs, thought I was losing it, as I leapt chuckling...... If I do another long un, I'll email you a Electric shaver. Lol........ Acutally, most of the stuff I've now reduced to about 4:30 ish minutes...... But thank you for listening. Much appreciated.
Who can turn down a Friday night in with astronaut and whale samples. Not me. Interested to know how you're getting on with the fabfilters and more specifically what you found of use on this piece. It certainly is both low-key and somehow almost majestic. I listened to it here first and then went over to YT to see what you paired it with (was expecting whales and astronauts, of course), and while I think Takete is a little rough and ready, I thought the mix, especially once the lettering/graphics came in, was interesting.
Well Mister Studs, an epic and no mistake. I reckon you could launch a whole Bank Holiday Parade with that (somewhere in South London anyway).
Nine minutes is certainly the album version, but I'd be interested to see what you could do it with given just a seven inch single (as was) to work with. What was most of this vast Dred Zep enterprise done in?
Thank you Mr G. It's done with a combo of Cubasis & Auria. Dred Zep Stairway tune was a Midi file(I'm no guitarist. I get by!....lol). I try & master on AP Mostly. Cubasis handsome le Midi file better than AP.........
Sorry mate. I meant to write. Cubasis handles Midi file better than AP.
@orchardman . Don't keep on about the good times baby! I really enjoyed the vocals in this tune, especially the harmonies. There were bits of this that reminded me some of Beatles Revolution. I think it was the style, the rhythm and the vocals. All in all, an enjoyable listen.
@petermcclard . I dig the syncopated rhythms with the synths at the start. I paid more attention to the backing track than the vocals. I really dug the backing track. You varied things up a lot to keep interest. I do appreciate how the chord progs and melodies and pace complemented the spoken word parts nicely. Some nice sentiments were expressed in the spoken word parts.
Sorry for the lack of feedback last month. No excuses, I just didn't get round to it.
Here is this months for the tunes posted so far;
@Richtowns nice haunting sci-fi vibe. Loved the ping pong effect on the drums.
@studs1966 sorry man, this one didn't work for me. I was never a big Zeppelin fan but at least the original had a Jimmy Page solo at the end of it.
@trackedout some nice stoner rock man. I was just hoping for a blazing solo at the end and it never came.
@marliess great production, the overall sound is bang on, and there's great playing in there too. Your vocal style isn't really my cup of tea but your lyrics are clever and your mention of the Counting Crows took be back 20+ years.
@igneous1 nice production, with a good beat and I was loving the bass sound. Not so fussed on the other synth sounds but that's just my personal taste.
@ecamburn another great production job, I really liked the intro and some of the synths bits especially the Arabian scale bit. Like a lot of the electronic instrumentals posted on here, I just keep waiting for the guitars and the vocals to come in and for it to turn in to a proper song. Sorry, just showing my age again.
@JohnnyGoodyear a nice dose of melancholy for a sunny Saturday afternoon. Loved the laid back vibe and the paired back production. It just shows you don't need a whole lot of different things happening to get a really good sound. I must admit I prefer the ones where you sing.
@petermcclard musically a real mish mash of styles and sounds which all just seem to work together. I especially loved some of the 70s synth sounds and I am going to dig out my old Rick Wakeman albums after writing this. As for your words, as much as I applaud your sentiment, I'm afraid I don't share you optimism. Sometimes I despair for the future but hey, the sun is shining here in Wales and nearly a day in, the apocalypse hasn't happened yet.
The basic instrumental I made a few weeks ago, inspired by the Jordantron app I just had bought. I think the song is not bad, it is not great, but decent (my opinion of course).
For me the lyrics are pretty good (they are perhaps a bit simple compared to others here, that is because English is not my first language, and because I haven't written much lyrics, so not much experience) . Its a bit hard for me to write lyrics. But these lyrics came pretty fast last weekend, and I immediately sang it. One take of singing (and a very tiny adjustment take), I won't resing it. They are personal and inspired by parts of my emotional inner state at the time of writing them. I had doubts about publishing because of a sense of shame about them. Lyrics are in Spoiler below.
Frozen
The kindness of you always makes me feel sad
cause i know you'll never want me that bad
we walk in this place
we talk to a face
we go to our homes
we both stay alone
This love in my life it won't go away
I listen to your words but i don't know what to say
I just can't connect to this part of my soul
where is the key that fits this hole
it's keeping me apart
from places in the heart
it's hidden there forever
i'm just not that clever
but Julia in front of me
pc books songs food won't fill my empty heart
i know they won't fill this desparate part
it's staying there in deep freeze, keeping me apart
from you and me together and never stay apart
my Julia my heart is gone
Thanks Mister O. I am coming to the opinion (at least some of the time) that if you're a lyric writer who wants to write some songs then keeping them simple and just writing the damn songs rather than trying to be a five part band and a production engineer as well makes the most sense for me. Just looking to get over the feeling and if something comes along that plucks other people's heartstrings as well then it can always be put in the hands of the, you know, musicians
Mostly emotional inner state is where the best of truth resides Mister M.....
Grateful for the lyrics because while the feel is strong the vocal is not always clear (something I'm very familiar with )...
You do capture a very wistful atmosphere excellently, I think -especially towards the end- I could see/hear the vocal a little further up in the mix. Lovely smooth guitar, especially at the start of the break....and I could certainly have another 'chorus' repeated at the end before (or maybe instead of) the sudden stop....all just toast of course
Shame is perhaps the most powerful of emotions, certainly it seems to be one of the most long-lasting. I think this kind of work actually helps dealing with that. Well done.
@JohnnyGoodyear - Hi Johnny, thanks a lot for your feedback. Appreciated. Your words make sense. A repeat of the chorus...and a little lift of the vocals near the end....i shall think about/consider it. Thanks for listening and for your reaction.
Please make sure it is the electric type. After today's Kaning, (hurts badly Pep) I'm definitely not save around blades at the moment. Could be visiting your Island on a Thursday evening next season. Your reduction idea sounds good.
I like this. A lot. I have listened to it both straight and not. It is lovely either way.
I thought that I could happily live the rest of my life with never hearing that song again. I was wrong. Nice work at bringing the dub...dub...dub
Beautifully ominous. Massive fuzzed out bass. I'm a sucker for narcotized vocals.
This moves along quite nicely with intriguing little detours along the way.
Also, produced very well.
Tricky percussion.
Perfectly limpid electric piano.
Beautifully executed vocal.
What the hell is not to like?
Very nicely done. Very.
@JohnnyGoodyear love that. First of all the vocal is great, really well performed and sung with a lovely vocal timbre. Also your timing is much tighter nowadays, gone is the looseness of some of your earlier tracks.
The combination of Soft Drummer and the sparse instrumentation works really well and the track has that recognisable JG atmosphere.
Nice imagery in the lyrics too, although to be honest I didn't pay that much attention to them on the first couple of listens as I was more absorbed in the melody and the vocal performance, the lyrics kinda sunk in after a few listens and give the song more depth for repeated listens.
Not sure if you're still persevering with the guitar, but if so you might want to try singing and playing together if you aren't already. It's a great way to build rhythm, and also for coming up with ideas.
@Richtowns there's a very satisfying tone on that bass patch, deep and warm and very inviting. It certainly drew me in to the track,me specially on the first listen. And I also really like some of the weirder and more dissonant synth noises behind it, it all goes to create a great atmosphere. I was less keen on the lead synth melody, it seemed a little too simplistic, whereas the bassline is quite hooky.
The rhythm is an interesting one, it has a groove (thanks to the bass line) even though the percussion isn't groove-driven. Anyway, it works pretty well.
The main thing I would liked to have heard though is more evolution, a variation in the bass line for example, because the second part feels a little redundant, we've already heard all the ideas by then. It could have done with some additional creative input to take the track somewhere new.
@trackedout another really cool moody lo-fi track from you, love the sounds and the atmosphere in this one.
That intro is beautifully heavy, love the bass and guitars here. I'm not sure about the vocal though, I think it works better at the end of the track when it's mixed further down and less raw sounding. The idea behind the vocal is great, but it just might need a few more takes to get the best from it.
The dive-bombing guitar is awesome, buzz-sawing in the background and dripping with menace.
Ending might be a little too abrupt, even for me (I'm often accused of doing the same).
Overall though Inreally enjoyed this.
@Igneous1 a recurring melodic theme with variations. A constant and steady (but evolving) bassline. Some space in the music.
It still sounds like you, (in a good way) but it's also great to have some structure and a more defined journey, because it's much easier to latch on to the track and also makes repeated listens much more rewarding.
I really like the recurring melody, and all its variations, it's a great hooky theme and anchors the whole track and gives it purpose. The interplay between melody, bass and drums works really well and the whole track is very polished and pleasing. Nice one.
Not sure if you're using an exotic scale for the melody and harmony, but there is something unusual in the sound which I really like in this one.
@sudds ive listenned to your soundcloud before, im a fan of dub and your stuff is great. Great start, to the track, this sounds dubby. The trumpets and bass and the long drawn out echos, I cant help but like his. Im a scientist fan so I can listen to 12" versions no probs. There were moments when I thought the combination of dub and the piano part of stairway to heaven didnt work but most of the time it did. Listening on speakers it seemed there was too much reverb but on headphones I changed my mind. Nice experiment, enjoyable to listen to. One day soon Ill try something dubby again
@Trackedout great song. All that guitar stuff sits really well together. All mixed very well. I image that you used a voice effect to give you an accompaniment but it sounds completely believable. Nice effortless drawl and great lyrics. I liked it, I feel like Ive now lived it.
@marliess i liked the stereo effects. Again nice guitars. The rhythm is fun and uplifting. I like your voice, nice and clear so I can here the lyrics which I liked. Really good stuff.
@ingenious oh, wow! What lovely sounds. I want some of those myself. I can hear different distances/levels, I imagine this is through reverb but its done well. Strange buildups and interesting rhythms. Im going to be analysing this one some more. I usually think in a extremely basic song structure and this is different, feels more like a live jam, and works. All seems well balanced, mixed etc to me. Thanks for doing that to my eardrums.
@Ecamburn yes, yes, I like this, a classic, samples work well. Great synth work and nice patches, really cool buildups and breaks. It has a nice "serious" feel to it, like its trying to tell me something important. I like that type of thing. It reminded me of the band minilogue a bit.
@johnnygoodyear you have a great voice, and this is a very nice composition. Its quite musical and so Im a bit out of my depth. I would say the piece all goes together very well and the simplicity and subtlety bely its intricacy and depth. I defo wanna hear some more from you.
@orchadman very nice intro. Just gets better. This is a very professional package. It sounds like a studio recording. I noticed the panning of the instruments and it made a big space and put different instruments into it. Clever use of reverb? It feels nice and clean! The voice and lyrics are great, very good work indeed.
@petermcclard I get the comment. Your words are easy to listen too, like the William Burroughs or Timothy Leary recitals to music. It feels altruistic and thats always nice to hear. The music seems perfectly matched. Uplifting and calming, enjoyable piece.
@marcel a great dreaming feel, i liked hearing your voice but maybe it was hidden a little too much in the music. The last minute or so the tune got much more interesting. (I was thinking this might been by design as the guitar might have been an analogy for the missing connection with the woman but) I did think that the guitar(s) could have been featured a little, earlier. Really enjoyable listen. Im a secret Duran Duran/Nick Rhodes fan so you hit the spot there.
