  • How can you get your own sounds to work as loops or one shot in BH? Any help? Thanks

That's what I was thinking... It's pretty expensive IMO, just to get a few kits that look interesting I would easily go up to 50-60 bucks... And for the whole sample kits, it would cost over 100 buck it seems... Too bad... As the import of sounds does not seem really easy (if I understand correctly, the sample editing / chopping has not been improved and it was pretty lame in v1.0... Made me go away then at least...)

I havent tested sampling my own stuff in it yet(been thinking of looking into it since i woke up few hours ago), but yea it seems like its pretty easy. So for example i think that instead of buying the 808 pack for example, it would be much better to buy ruismaker and sample your own 808 sounds into BH, that is if you are willing to spend few extra bucks and a bit of work. Or then just look for free 808 samples online and import those.

  • oh wow, I was on the fence about getting this one, but wow. what a fast app to writing songs. I'm loving this think, and when used as an audio unit in aum you can layer sounds nicely. i'd like to see a few more effects added, and ability to record in from another app through audiobus.but right now i'm loving this app

  • maybe i'm missing it, but is it possible to record the audio of another ios synth into beathawk ????

This has been mentioned a couple of times in the thread. Can you or @JohnnyGoodyear explain why?

  • I had to redownload the IAP sounds and it seems that BeatHawk doesn't launch from Audiobus. I have to manually start the app, then it connects fine with AB

I gained a bunch of space by deleting the app, and re downloading everything from scratch.

To celebrate this long-awaited update, here is the first track I ever did on iOS. It is done entirely in Beathawk, mostly with the default kit (plus a few custom samples added).

  • for me it is just the workflow of the app. everything is played out very efficiently. it's quick getting samples pasted in and to pads and edited. if i remember correctly everything is one click to get to another screen and back. patterns and songs can be built up very quickly. I was unsure about buying it yesterday, but once i did, I new instantly it was a great buy. perfect for ios enviornment. i highly recommend

one question though. what is all the midi CC automation lanes for, it doesn't seem like there are that many effects. does this app send midi out as well?

Thanks for the tip, although I just finished downloading (slowly) the packages, so not in the mood to redo the process!
I was surprised that old projects can be edited in the new sequencer :)
Although I had to reload every sound that was coming from IAPs.

Bug, pads won't trigger when a pattern changes . Anyone else?

How do choke groups work? How does it determine what gets played if there's multiple hits?

With a pad selected, tap on Choke Group 1. (You probably also want "ONE SHOT" mode, so that the sample will continue ringing on release -- e.g., for an open HH). Then select another pad and tap on Choke Group 1. Now both pads are assigned to the same Choke Group and will cut each other off. Repeat for as many pads as you want to add to the group. That's it!

You can have up to 4 independent Choke Groups, but you usually don't need more than one. It's mostly for Hi Hats. If you want to undo a Choke Group assignment, just highlight a pad and tap the Choke Group 1 pad again to deselect it.

Like most things in BeatHawk, it's straightforward and intuitive. The combination of ONE SHOT and Choke Group is what you need for choking open Hi Hats.

  • @Lady_App_titude thanks for the info.

I'm quite sure that BM3 will have a lot more features but it remains to be seen if it will be as easy and straightforward as the Beathawk GUI.

Dunno. Just does. I know, not very helpful :) Seriously though it's very fluid, and the 'keep on recording over the loop' function seems to really promote layering/melodies....AND after all that I'm very partial to apps with easy song modes as they seem to help get me past the yet another pretty sixteen bars but now what problem...

yeah, it will have more features, but it might be a different beast. not better or worse...just different. For me getting the song ideas out of my head quickly is more important than all the bells and whistles. and Beathawk is probably the most effective app I have found yet that can do that. so fast

  • Hey Guys, BeatHawk Dev here.
Glad to read you enjoy this free update, I took note of some things reading through.

I am here just to let you know that we are working on fixing AU issues with multiple instances.
Hopefully a fix will be in 2.0.2. (2.0.1 is already in the pipeline)
2.0.1 will fix some crashs and make app retro compatible with non-retina iPads as many users still use these devices.

  • Finally i start to enjoy Beathawk after waiting a long time for an update. The AU is huge and the same features like when using in standalone mode. One of the few apps featuring a nice and easy file browser. Great update.

Awesome, thanks :) I thought I was the only one getting a black screen w/ some text labels but no graphics at all

    You guys rock

  • @BastienCo Just FYI tapping the help button brings up a blank white screen on my iPad Air 2 running ios 10.2

    Cool!

Please do consider adding at least some basic tools for trimming and editing the recorded samples to save precious disk-space on out iOS devices.

I may not a 'regular' user but I do wish that Input-Monitoring could get implemented at some point in time as it will make it easier to use external recording devices for creating samples.(use case. iRig Mic HD attached to lightning port with headphones in the 3.5mm jack, would love to hear what's coming thru the mic...).

Thanks for the free update :)

I don't know what it is about Beathawk but I have more success with my timing doing finger drumming or keyboard playing than with any other app. It makes me feel like a musician which is a stretch to say the least.

Hellou. I noticed that barely anything is midi mappable(only few next to useless buttons/faders are..), will there be some update to this? Like instrument browsing, play, stop, rec, and preferably also stuff like go to step editor(the button for step editor should be somewhere more readily accessible, i just spent like 10 minutes trying to find it again..) etc

Also i think it would be much better if you could play "pitch" of a selected pad with midi keys without having to go to the pitch thing. Pads should be midi CC mappable imo and notes should play the selected pad. I know not everyone would like this, but there should be an option for this, as it would allow to use both pads and keys in a proper way.

There should be a proper recording of audio input. First of all START FROM BEGINNING OF THE LOOP, not when you push the button. This is just no brainer, im sure im not the only one not wanting to cut like hell every time you record something. Rec starting immediately simply makes it impossible to record anything that wouldnt need trimming. Predetermine audio loop length before recording is also REALLY important on recording proper loops. And ofc the ability to for example start from mid way(the thing you select it with needs to stick to quantize thing to make it 10 times easier to cut loops) and go to end. This allows you to also record in the reverb/delay tails(by recording it twice and cutting from the middle and selecting the later part).

Also for sampling, it needs to start rec when it hears input.

Ps. The audio unit is fucked up even if using only one instance of it. You should also make the AU window to stretch properly

  • What a charming fellow.

That track was phenomenal! Love the almost Zeppelin "Kashmir" strings against the tight groove, very original & distinct and the fact you pulled a production off like this in just Beathawk is inspiring.

  • Unfortunately I've found a nasty bug:

When recording on one of the pads, hitting undo (just once) resulted in two of the other loops I'd recorded earlier on other pads being wiped as well, and no way to recover them (obviously tried hitting redo). So I had imported a drum loop, then recorded a bass line, some piano chords, and was trying to record a melody on a different pad, and when I hit undo because the timing was out both my bass and my chords were wiped along with the melody. This happened on two separate occasions and I ended up losing pretty much all the work I had done.

I forgot to mention this undo bug. Happened to me couple of times yesterday. I was able to recover the lost recording by hitting undo and redo, except once.

Also had a crash on pad muting and lost some work(i dont know if it was all since last reopen, since i was just playing around and had opened and closed it quite a few times before).

    Using air2 and newest os

That has happened to me too and the only 'logic' I've found here is that Beathawk makes a 'undo-snapshot' when you hit record and if you record to multiple pads with multiple sounds pressing 'undo' reverts to the moment before record was pressed... (This procedure is very repeatable).

used to happen to me with previous version as well often.

It seems to be a big file and takes a long time to load. I hung in there and eventually was rewarded with the manual. I think this is the link to the full manual in PDF format. I like to save them into iBooks so it's easier to flip back and forth without having to load each time.
