New iPad for $329!!

Apple just slightly updated the iPad Air 2, upgrading the aging a8x to the a9 chip and including a slightly brighter display! Maybe the new chip will be clocked slightly higher as well? (I can hope)

Also name changed to just iPad, which makes a whole lot of sense to me when you think there is iPad pros. Seems more like the mac naming scheme.

But most importantly it's now $329!!

Here's the link: http://www.apple.com/ipad-9.7/

They also updated the iPhone se to have a starting storage of 32gb and made a red iPhone 7

  • Looks like the Ipad trend follows the IPhone SE model. If the new Ipad comes with 4Gb ram count me in. I'll take two!

  • Hmmm, odds of a mini pro and pencil are growing more unlikely.

  • Retains the 3.5mm headphone jack

New iPad goes back to the same thickness as the iPad Air, loses the slimmer design of the Air 2. Weird, wonder if it had to due with getting the price down? It will be hell for case manufacturers having adjust to the new/old size.

    Here is the article:

Definitely makes for a noticeable difference

  • Seems like a market saturation thing ... iPad Air 1 owners know they'll be left in the dust before too long, so, hey, here's a cheap iPad with a better processor than the Air 2, and you can use it with all your existing Air accessories, like covers, cases, or in my case, a keyboard cover. I highly doubt it's more than 2gb RAM, but If they had a 256 storage option, I'd seriously consider it.

Still might. Mull it over, that is

  • Will be interesting to see if the increased thickness has any battery benefits. I wonder if they have used a better screen and the same iPad Air 2 battery or they have reduced the spec somehow to keep their profit margins the same.

Smacks to me of using older tech to keep the margins the same due to having increased prices generally. That's fair enough, but I wouldn't be surprised if they spin it like it's a new low cost item, when really it's probably not better than picking up an Air 2 if you can find one cheap. Hmm all guessing of course.

Interesting though. If they radically change and improve the new Pro iPads this year, it may make things clearer :p

  • Very interesting. So I guess the question would be, upgrade now to a 128gb new iPad from a 16gb Air 1? or wait until this fall when they might upgrade the iPad pro line?

or do you upgrade your 16gb iPhone 5s to a new shiny red iPhone 7 with 128gb?

or do you just get a new midi controller like a m-Audio Code 49, MPK 249 or MPD232, something that will work great with BM3 and realize that even though you enjoy your iPad, you mostly use it as a sequencer or sound module inside of Logic anyway.

  • It all comes down to the RAM for me, 2GB is definitely not future proof with the newer virtual instruments like Colossus Piano on the scene. If it was 3-4GB it might make me switch from my Air1

  • I think it is likely they update the pro line much sooner than autumn, maybe as early as next month. I would be surprised if they didn't do a Spring event this year.

Yeah and if they did this to my Air2 and the battery lasted for 3 hours more, I would say Hell Yeah!

  • Yeah I'd be skeptical. Air2 was released as a flagship model. This is specifically designed to be second best.

I think this was the spring event, more of a refresh. It will be the autumn now before anything else comes along.

So was the iPhone SE, which turned out to be a sleeper powerhouse machine. But either way, this seems like a pretty good value deal - and seeing the headphone jack makes me pretty happy.

  • What is this thing going to be called. No, really. What will it be called. It can't just be called the iPad, we've had that - the first iPad, which we called the iPad 1 once it became clear there'd be another (same as in the First World War, it wasn't called that at the time, they had no idea there'd be another a few decades after "the war to end all wars"). They can't call it "The New iPad". We've had that - what we came to call the iPad 3. What will this thing be called?

Oh yeah, iPhone SE is pretty nice! I have it myself and even use it live for running Animoog on. Doesn't half heat up but I think that's ok?

    iPad Too

Was going to upgrade from air 1 to an air 2 with a lot more storage but will have to wait and see on storage options for this new one first.

Looks like the camera now has:

Backside illumination - handy for selfies (?)

Hard to get that squishy look with a camera though.

I think I've discovered the reason for the increase thickness, they have undid a very nice feature that was introduced with the air 2. If you look at the new iPads spec sheet under the display section, you'll notice that it no longer features a fully laminated display. Meaning the glass and display are no longer fused (glued) together like they were on the air2. This leaves the new iPad with an air pocket between the glass and screen that decreases perceived display quality, as it looks like the screen is not inside of the glass.

However on the bright side, the screen itself is apparently better, as it is brighter and believed to have the same color gamut, although this still needs confirmation once it's actually released.

Also I think it's a safe bet that it will have two gigs of RAM, as they show the new iPad performing multitasking. No iPad with fewer than two gigs of RAM has ever been capable of side-by-side multitasking.

    iPad Semi-Pro

I also laughed at that. Jesus, that's quite an exchange rate!

  • This would make a perfect 'KorgPad' :D
(pre-load it with all Korg apps, iaps included and sell it for $499 and add some 'bundles' with either nanoKey Studio or Plug-Key or both).

  • iPad Air 3 would be the correct name.

Imho. Single Core speed is about 30 percent better, multi core speed is same as iPad Air 2. Cheaper and more storage. Starts with 32 GB.

OK, but a bit boring, if this is all Apple has to offer.

  • If the display feels like the Air 1 though, just had that flimsy hollow aspect I never liked.
