  • I think this will go down in history as "The Newest iPad"

  • Kind of confusing what to buy, given that I'm in the market for an iPad right now. Very tempting to get one of these new iPads because I'm not sure I really care about the display not being bonded. And since the Pro 9.7 is a few years old now it seems like I'll totally get a case of buyer's remorse when they update it in the Fall. Decisions!

"Few years old”? Pro 9.7 was released march 2016.

any reason to upgrade from an mini 4/128 ?

That's exactly what Apple want. The Mini was the cheapest model to get into the iOS eco system. But clearly too cheap. It will be EOL soon. The new iPad will now be the only cheap model. And if analists are right we get various Pro models (including the mini) the will be much more expensive.

  • In case anybody wondered, the new iPad indeed has 2gb of ram. I myself am probably going to hold out for the Pro 2, but the new iPad should be good enough for most iOS musicians.

    Internet years...

  • I couldn't wait. Ended picking up a Pro 9.7. There's always something new around the corner so I figured it was time to just get on with it.

    Someone else agrees.

  • Not so sure about these new ipads now. Saw some benchmarks recently confirming that the AIr 2 outperformed it in multicore performance and the screen is also worse than the Air2. So if I was upgrading from an Air 1 or below I'd still try and go for the Air 2 if I couldn't afford a Pro.

How reliable were those benchmarks though? Post them please so we can have a look. Still hearing twice the ram and a faster chip here?

    there's this one http://wccftech.com/apple-a9xipad-pro-benchmarks/

But ok it's only a little bit less multicore performance on the A9 here but I did see others, will see if I can find them. I was surprised and sceptical too, but maybe they are not all accurate.

I have an SE with the same A9 chip and it does feel zippier than the Air 2 and single core is definitely better but then I don't stress loads of apps at once like I do with my Air2.

Also the new ipad doesn't have a laminated display or anti reflective coating apparently. so it seems better for some things but worse for others.

  • The iPad Air 2017 processor is a bit faster than the iPhone SE version. And never forget: The devil always is in the details! So maybe (i dont know it) the theoretical multicore performance turnes out to be a bit BETTER than with the iPad Air2. Maybe (i wouldnt be surprised) the battery runtime (for wi-fi/internet use) would be about half an hour better.

(when brightness is the same on iPad Air2 and iPad 2017, which has a improved brigthness)

Improved single-core performance (about 30-40 percent) could mean, that your DAW can handle more instruments / effects and such. With normal usage you will not remark a difference, but the iPad Air 2017 could be a bit "smoother".

Non-laminated display have the advantage of better and easyer repair.

  • I'm thinking this could be an inexpensive solution to my iPad Air 1 woes, and would make a nice, dedicated (as in, always plugged in to the studio gear) heart for my recording studio ... maybe/possibly/probably/might ...

And those of us who never had anything beyond an Air 1 wouldn't notice the lack of a laminated display.

Both true. The fully laminated display its excellent but it's by no means a deal breaker if it's not there . For example my old iPad 3 feels different than my iPad Pro, cheaper might be the best word to describe the sensation of the not laminated display after using a laminated display, but it's a minor thing.

  • I think coming from an Air 1 it will feel like an upgrade. Coming from an Air 2 it will feel like a downgrade despite any performance increase. Screen quality is important for me esp if you are doing any visual stuff with it. I thought my mini 2 display was ok until I got an Air 2 then I realised how bad the mini 2 display was.

  • I do like the anti reflective screen on air 2. But as far as feel I find zero difference actually. Must be guitar playing hands perhaps. The only time I notice a difference berween Air1 and air2 is in sunlight which is not an issue for me so the new air will definitely be an upgrade should I choose that route.

  • I don't know if this is anything to do with coatings etc but …
For a very long time my iPad was an iPad 2, and I did everything of note on that. Last year I got an iPad Pro Enormous, and the first thing that started to piss me off was that on the Pro, I'm forever touching something and it half registers it - makes it dark or something - but doesn't actually take any action on it. I'm almost always having to touch a thing twice to make it happen. The iPad 2 never did any of that nonsense. If I tap or touch a thing, it works first time. The iPad Pro seems to require a pair of touches for a lot of things. It could be that I'm more referring to web pages, in safari or chrome or Firefox, or it could be that it is a general screen / digitiser thing.

  • I was just at the Apple store and they'll be getting the new iPads in stock on Tuesday. So I am going to do a side by side with the new iPad vs. the iPad Pro 9.7. I suspect, not having a lot of money right now after just replacing my iPhone, that I'll be getting the regular iPad @ $329. If we don't like it, at least we haven't dropped $700 on the thing and it won't hurt so badly to replace it in a few years.

We got good service out of our iPad2 but stupid me put it on a table where a drunk knocked it off and smashed the screen. Otherwise unbonded screen and all it was a very good unit. I'm looking forward to the improvement in speed and multi-tasking. Time will tell if I should have replaced it two weeks ago with an Air 2 @ $399 or this 32 GB iPad @ $329.

Not quite certain what you're referring to here, as I have never had this experience with the Pro, but then, if it helps you diagnose it at all, I also almost never use a browser with it either....

Can't back you up on this one. Have the same iPad as you (iPad Pro 12.9) and it's as responsive as any iPad I've had before it and i do a lot of web browsing on it (safari).

In fact the thing you describe happens a lot on my old iPad 3 mostly because it's so slow now, specially compared to the Pro, that some quick touches get lost sometimes.

  • I have the unresponsiveness at first touch sometimes, but only browsing (for example in this here forum). Doesn't matter, which device ( Air/Air2/Pro9.7). I aleays thought it has to do with some sites... . Not a big thing, musical touches are always nicely and immediately recognised over here.

  • Did I miss the RAM mention in there somewhere?

    Yes. In Step 8:
    Apple A9 APL0898 SoC + Samsung K3RG1G10BM-BGCH 2 GB LPDDR4 RAM (as seen in the iPhone 6s).
So 2 gb it is then.

ditto, mostly noticeable with hyper links on this forum.

Have this too on my iPhone 6S plus. Happens very seldom on music apps. But what drives me crazy sometimes is that fine tuning without entering the value via numbers is a real pain. 90% of the time i set a value and lift the finger it freaking jumps to another value.......arrrghhhhh!!! This is one of the things multi touch really sucks for. It´s great for every kind of interact with waveforms, large sliders, XY pads but it is a hell for fine editing of any kind.
So it always could get better.

Weird that they call it the iPad 5. The original Air from 2013 was also called the iPad 5
