    I was going to get an Air 2 but that would be pointless given this as an upgrade from that with a sweet price as well!

  • any reason to upgrade from an mini 4/128 ?

  • Hopefully it's got 2gb of ram. I'm highly interested if so. 1gb and I'll pass.

  • iPad Pro 2 9.7 is gonna be it for me!

    Hmmm, odds of a mini pro and pencil are growing more unlikely.

    With the pencil and larger screen, the Pro is aimed squarely at the digital illustration market. The mini is contradictory to that.

    I have a couple Wacom Cintiqs already. What I really want is a good digital sketchpad that can fit in my jacket pocket. Mini pro would have been perfect.

    Retains the 3.5mm headphone jack

    I don't expect any of the iPads to lose the 3.5 jack anytime soon. The move on the iPhone was done to help it be waterproof. I don't expect them to take the same approach with the Ipad. Who knows though. Just my gut feeling.

    That and courage.

    What is this thing going to be called. No, really. What will it be called. It can't just be called the iPad, we've had that - the first iPad, which we called the iPad 1 once it became clear there'd be another (same as in the First World War, it wasn't called that at the time, they had no idea there'd be another a few decades after "the war to end all wars"). They can't call it "The New iPad". We've had that - what we came to call the iPad 3. What will this thing be called?

    Its called removing on hand inventory for the books for more cash on hand.

    Have you seen the market coupled with interest rate hikes.

    This is money money money move move move. Plain and simple.

    lol. Never called it a smart move. Just pointing out the "reasoning".

    429$ for 128gb model {edit.. $599}
    People selling iPad Air 2 64gb second hand for $500-$600

    Aus dollars btw

    It's a good deal, I've never had an iPad bigger than 16gb (and I'm on my 4th iPad now) so I'm tempted

    Edit: somehow I ended up on USA store.. dammit

    U.K. Prices.

    New 128gb iPad £429

    iPad Air 2 128gb can be had for £469

    So for £40 more you can get the Air2 with its bonded screen and a slightly slower (probably) processor.

    To be honest, I'd go for the Air2. The new model may have a brighter screen, but the Air2 screen is bright enough for most uses. The processor of the Air2 is also good enough for most uses too.

    Anything and everything from 'You Beauty' to 'F****ng piece of sh1te' depending on how my music session is going....just like my current iPad Mini 2. :D

  • Everything I've read leans toward 2 GB of ram, and I learned something I had been blithely unaware of ... my iPad Air 1 has been scraping by with a measly 1GB all this time. So if I can effectively double my available storage space, the extra RAM and much better processor should keep me in the clear, if not at a pro/pencil level, for a few years.

    $429 for 128 at what looks to be 2gb of RAM (probably sager not to assume, but all the other iPads have at least 2GB, so it would be quite odd to make this faster than the Air 2 and only give it one gig of RAM). And if it's an audio-only unit, heck, I don't need no stinkin' cellular. Attractive carrot on the end of that "are you ready to refresh your old iPad yet?" stick.

  • iPad Air 2 -> iPad 7th gen

    US: $399 -> $329 (17,5% drop)
    EU: €439 -> €409 (6,8% drop)

    Way to go Apple!
    Or is it the Trump effect?

    Trump effect does the opposite

  • When converted to AUD, the new prices aren't that attractive :(

  • I feel that they're shitifying then normal iPads to make iPad Pro more attractive by contrast. I'm very happy with my premium quality Air2, I won't be downgrading to a budget version.

  • I agree with the sales cycle notion that they have to goose the numbers....

    Yeah I went to Apple website and was looking at USA price, it's actually $600aud for 128gb

    Yep :(

    iPhone SE 32Gb = 399 USD = 679 AUD. It's daylight robbery

  • edited March 2017

    Well the$329 converted to Canadian is $449 and the Canadian dollar sank even more yesterday. I'm not buying anything now or in the foreseeable future. The benefit of that is I'll have more $ for a rainy day and I'll have one less machine to attend to when time is precious and the only real premium

    THE BATTERY!

    Air 2 was 27.3 watt-hour. Now we have 32.2Wh. That is significant

    ...downgrade

    Since it has same battery life it means it consumes more power. ( brighter display ? )

    They had starting it when the first iPad Pro came not being so much powerfull than Air (maybe they want make the air the pro?) and pencil, smart connector etc.

    The same with middle products (iPad3, iPad mini3, iPad mini4...) but almost the cck3 became universal even being released as pro feature. Let's hope they don't block it in one of these updates...

  • The article makes a lot of sense. Actually, in some ways I can see Apples strategy making a lot of sense too.

    The iPad range always seemed linked to its £400 starting price point (U.K.). In some ways I think Apple felt trapped by that fact and needed to address it in some ways to address different market segments. It will be interesting to see know the price shackles are essentially off for the Pro range of iPads.....how far will Apple push the tech and price range? On the other foot, how much will Apple restrict the lower price range in tech and features to keep that desirability factor for the high price range?

  • edited March 2017

    Ok.... who started the 1GB of RAM rumor?

    WTF to that guy.

    if apple it's advertising true multitasking and Picture in Picture, obviously it has at least 2GB old RAM, otherwise they wouldn't be saying a word about it.

    No, you misunderstood, higher watt hour means longer time to discharge because of higher battery capacity.
    The ~5 Wh probably extends by 1 hour of use

    Nope. Imagine the iPads like cars. The new iPad needs more gasoline to run the same distance than the Air2.
    If the charger of the new iPad remains the same ,it will also need more time to charge ( fill the bigger fuel tank ).
    But the price is good (great for an Apple product)

  • edited March 2017

    @Korakios is right, the documentation says it has the same hours of useability but a bigger battery. so Apple is implicitly saying it is less efficient.

    I think we'll have to just see when all the testers get their hands on these devices so that we get more info than Apple's promo material. I'm hopeful it will end up having longer battery life.

    If there are significant markets growing for high-end phones and tablets, I'd figure Apple could be interested in selling to them. It looks like it's headed that way.

    Like cars and computers, and unlike Coca-cola, cell phones and tablets offer a wide range of potential with regard to desired power and features. I think the market must evolve in line with that potential and Apple will want to take the ability they've already developed in the technology to exploit it. If they don't, someone else will. At the same time, the competition to sell consumer-level products should keep that much larger market moving forward.
