Seems like a market saturation thing ... iPad Air 1 owners know they'll be left in the dust before too long, so, hey, here's a cheap iPad with a better processor than the Air 2, and you can use it with all your existing Air accessories, like covers, cases, or in my case, a keyboard cover.

That's exactly my thought. That keyboard cover wasn't exactly cheap. My Air 1 was $599 (32GB) so if I do want to get a new one then it's really a no-brainer for the new 32GB ($329) or a small-brainer for the 128GB ($429).

  • We have always had just "MacBook Pro" and "iMac"

So now we have just " iPad". I like the new naming. For geeks like us that care, we can remember the year it was released and other specs

  • THE BATTERY!

Air 2 was 27.3 watt-hour. Now we have 32.2Wh. That is significant

  • Great news, very attractive price. And now there's a 32Gb iPhone SE. I'm so glad I've waited and haven't bought anything

What is this thing going to be called. No, really. What will it be called. It can't just be called the iPad, we've had that - the first iPad, which we called the iPad 1 once it became clear there'd be another (same as in the First World War, it wasn't called that at the time, they had no idea there'd be another a few decades after "the war to end all wars"). They can't call it "The New iPad". We've had that - what we came to call the iPad 3. What will this thing be called?

We could call it "iPad with Retina Display"

... oh wait, that's the official name for the iPad 4.

that would explain the extra thickness then.

  • I just bought an Air 1 two days ago. But it was only $150 so I don't feel that bad.

OT, but allegedly that's not true.

    According to QI (http://qi.com/infocloud/the-first-world-war):

Far from waiting until the Second World War had started, the First World War was rather pessimistically named as such in 1918.

British Officer Lieutenant-Colonel Charles à Court Repington recorded in his diary for 10 Sep 1918 that he met with a Major Johnstone of Harvard University to discuss what historians should call the war. Repington said it was then referred to as The War, 'but that this could not last'. They agreed that 'To call it The German War was too much flattery for the Boche.' Repington concludes: 'I suggested The World War as a shade better title, and finally we mutually agreed to call it The First World War in order to prevent the millennium folk from forgetting that the history of the world was the history of war.' Between the wars most people did refer to the war as the Great War, even though that had originally referred to the Napoleonic War. In the US, it was ‘The World War’.

Hmmm, odds of a mini pro and pencil are growing more unlikely.

With the pencil and larger screen, the Pro is aimed squarely at the digital illustration market. The mini is contradictory to that.

  • "New iPad Air not Pro"

  • edited March 2017

btw the new iPad doesn't have the fully laminated display (anti-reflective coating) that the Air 2 has. Got the impression Apple made a product that somehow doesn't fit in their old product strategy. This is not the premium product Apple always advertises with. Als heavier and bulkier. New Apple strategy to go into lower market segments?
    And 1GB Memory? Bizarre

  • If they don't make the next Ipad thinner than air 2 I'm out!

Looks like the camera now has:

Backside illumination - handy for selfies (?)

    Saves using the photocopier.

Hard to get that squishy look with a camera though.

I'm sure there will be a companion app for that with a catchy name! Squishy?

If they make it any thinner they'll get a rush of people into their stores strictly to bend the demo units. They're tired of that with the iPhone.

I wonder if the "thin wars" are over. Either you're toting it around home as naked as Apple made it, where it doesn't really matter, or you're taking it outside where a bulky case is a necessity.

    There's comfort in heft.

I copied the above from discchord. $429.00 looks pretty good to me. For my ipad air, refurbished. 64gb...... I paid, if my email record is correct....$590.00 for my ipad air 64gb in 2014. I am liking the new prices.

Though, when I talked to one of the Doctor's in the ER last night, he had his nice shiny big bad ipad pro sitting there. I was drooling over it.

    Retains the 3.5mm headphone jack

  • I think it's pretty simple what this is for. The vast majority of ipads are used by folks at home to browse the web, do email and play games. Cheap android tablets have been eating Apple's lunch in this market. We are the very few, guys, that really care about specs. This could be very good news for Apple, and good news for folks who don't want to spend more than they would on a laptop to buy a tablet.

I just bought a Pro 9.7", 128 gig. If this comes with 128 gig, I'd probably have considered it. I don't usually run out of resources on my Pro, I didn't really on the Air 2, either.

  • Anything that gets iPad sales figures up again has to be seen as positive really.

  • I am incredibly happy that a new ipad still retains the headphone jack. Looking forward to the more powerful unit reveals later in the year :D

  • iPad SE would be logical. Like the phone where it has inherited its CPU from.

Looks like a right nice price to me! Selling a couple of items now to pay for the new iPad actually and this will be nice on the budget while retaining things I need and will still have the Air1 to work in tandem with it.

I think I've discovered the reason for the increase thickness, they have undid a very nice feature that was introduced with the air 2. If you look at the new iPads spec sheet under the display section, you'll notice that it no longer features a fully laminated display. Meaning the glass and display are no longer fused (glued) together like they were on the air2. This leaves the new iPad with an air pocket between the glass and screen that decreases perceived display quality, as it looks like the screen is not inside of the glass.

However on the bright side, the screen itself is apparently better, as it is brighter and believed to have the same color gamut, although this still needs confirmation once it's actually released.

Also I think it's a safe bet that it will have two gigs of RAM, as they show the new iPad performing multitasking. No iPad with fewer than two gigs of RAM has ever been capable of side-by-side multitasking.

So,you mean that"hollow"feel of the ipad Air screen is back? That's a bummer,it feels really bad/cheap compared to the Air 2.

  • iPad Air feels cheap compared to my old ipad 2, for what it's worth.

Anyway, at this point we're all just speculating what it feels like since they don't go on sale till Friday.

I know.... I was just joking (or trying to). Technically the iPad 3 was the first iPad with Retina display but Apple saved that title for the 4th gen.

    It's a mess.

  • Many tech companies have encountered the inevitable time where the law of diminishing returns kicks in. The iPad can be refined but it isn't going to get that much faster or thinner and break down barriers like the first few models did.

How much faster than instant can you go? Granted some apps & processes take longer to boot, respond, etc. but my Air 2 at two years old is still pretty blazing for things like Chrome & most of my music apps. I press Settings, boom it's up.

Thinner is even more of wash since the Air 2 & Pro 9.7 are, to me, uncomfortably thin without at least a portfolio case. I know some like the sleek look but I'm talking practicality. My Air 2 case is full on heavy duty, big corner bumpers, portfolio cover, etc. It's peace of mind.

The naming convention is actually a good thing since these companies are seeing how eventually the "iPhone 14", "Galaxy S16", etc really won't sound or look too cool and kind of works against their intending marketing of a new, futuristic, state of the art device.

Having simple iPad Pro & iPad lines streamline the marketing. To avoid customer confusion Apple will no doubt make some sort of indicator on the actual hardware to identify what model year an 'iPad' or 'iPad Pro' is, be it a code, serial number, etc.

The real question, for our community at least, is how much RAM this new A9 iPad has? Is it worth picking up now when the new Pro's with no doubt even more RAM will be coming in the fall? It'll be interesting.

Someone posted that the new iPad has 1Gb of RAM, but I suspect that they just have confidence in their own ability to speculate rather than having actual specs for a fact. Seems it would be odd if it shipped with anything other than 2Gb, but we'll see on Friday, I guess.

  • If it's got 2Gb of RAM I am very temped to get one.

  • Even with one gig it is still a sweet deal given the competing options.
