I have that perfect excuse (as if one was needed) of a faith in the promise of connectivity and, more immediately, long flights from cow town to Berlin coming up in a few days, so with the idea that surely everyone else will be sleeping and I'll be bored and lonesome enough to invest the time; why not....? Will report back, but it'll be a few weeks probably (and hopefully, surely, by then connectivity will have also landed...)
It looks like an amazing thing anyway, and most people would be happy with it as it is....but we're a fussy bunch.
Be interesting to hear how you get on. Funny thing for me is I'm not that fussed with the visuals - in fact I'd probably switch them off if there was an option, I just like the sound of that synth feller.
So how does one build a whole track in this? Basically what is the workflow roughly? Are we drawing in notes in some weird sequencer, recording them live via playing surface, both? Is there a song mode or are we working in short loop sequences ala Figure? Can the sounds/instruments be changed per sequence or is this one of those things where you are limited to a certain number of instruments per project? Or am I completely wrong and you have very little control and just swipe your finger around and hope that cool sounds happen? And most importantly, are the visuals helpful/fun or is this just a half assed synth sequencer dressed up all pretty?
This is either the best thing ever or it's taking the piss. Can't decide.
@brice?
I know you'll give it a fair shot. Looking forward to the verdict.
So I watched a lot of the videos and I heard a lot of cool drones, shimmering textures, and funky beats. What I did not hear was any melodies save for a few instances of warbling pitch bends that briefly resemble a melody. I mean cmon. Can you not play a nice melody in this thing? It sounds kick ass otherwise but that's a pretty big blind spot.
I'm going to need some education, but, at this early stage, I think that @brice's quote upthread is spot on:
It's very deep, and nothing about it is familiar, which is a good thing of course.
Someone(s) has put a lot of thought into this, to the point that it's puzzling that they didn't add an out. But no doubt they will.
I have no idea what I/we will end up using it for, but every so often you have to just admire the elegant design of a piece of software, and at this point that's what I'm doing.
Quite looking forward to the long flight now...
@JohnnyGoodyear go Johnny go go go
I'm always surprised when a full whistles-and-bells music app appears on here, yet with no thought to existing connectivity options, and in this case not even a way to record what you've done. The amount of creativity, skill, and brain-power involved in creating something as good as this is far beyond most of us, yet somewhere back when the brief was written, they missed out the stuff that's really important for anyone wanting to use it as a serious tool.
As for what this does already, I couldn't think of a better app to muck about with on a long flight.
It's got a bunch of arp's and sequencing options, but I agree there's not much in the official vids that shows it working to its full potential. I found the video @brice posted to be most helpful.
I think for me though, the drone's and weirdness will be enough - I've got a ton of apps that can do song and tune stuff already, the Fripp and Enoesque space noises this thing makes is something I definitely have a use for. Once they fix the crackling.
I think the lack of an output and the focus on performance is probably due to the fact that the dev is a highly creative artist in their own right who's initial intention is not to make a tool for others to partialy incorporate into their own works but rather as a complete 'art piece instrument' of sorts. It clearly is not designed/focused on being a mobile tool for people to integrate into their works/vision but rather a thing of beauty in and of itself.
That being said I probably won't try the free desktop version though until it gets iOS connectivity. Why be teased by something I can't use? I will certainly watch more videos by others though and am curious as to the range of sounds etc.
I still haven't found a single video including the ones mentioned that has an identifiable melody. I can barely hear any short note attacks for that matter. they advertise it as being capable of a variety of electronic music and yet to my ears it is very specifically an ambient, atmospheric machine, which is fine by the way, but don't piss on my head and call it rain. All this being said I'll probably still buy it eventually because it's just so damn appealing from a synesthesia point of view. Hoping a record option with export or some connectivity comes sooner rather than later.
I guess because I assume it's been ported from a desktop version that's why it doesn't have connectivity yet as the desktop version doesn't need it, so it makes sense why it comes last here. I hope it gets all the bells and whistles soon of course but at least you can record via an audio interface etc.
Yah, but if I am sitting at a PC with my Audio Interfaces, midi, synths, vsts, daws etc etc the range of attention temptations increases exponentially.
Ah right, didn't realise it was from a desktop version, that makes sense. Let's hope it's been coded in a connectivity-friendly way.
In the exact same boat, my friend.
An update came through yesterday. Not an update adding the necessities, but at the very least it gives hope that the path is defined.
I have a number of mixed feelings about this app so far; ranging from "good lord that's amazing" to "what in the hell is going on!" What I do know is that it desperately needs a very comprehensive manual. The "Help" tags are...helpful. But I am finding it's incredibly easy to completely destroy something great and never get it back again. In that regard it's wildly frustrating to work with.
As far as its ability to write defined melodies....I'm not sure. I've yet to achieve such a thing. It''s mostly (completely) very ambient and drone-y. Which it does very well, and will most likely be how I use it if I keep it around. For now the jury is still out.
I find that disappointingly reassuring. I suppose we will have to wait for help from the Coast Guard, but in the meantime I shall continue with my small paddling (which I suspect is sending me in circles, but time will tell....)
Circles at least coincide with the vernacular of the dancing beasts. I feel as though I may be paddling with a landing net. Getting a good workout at least.
Does it still crackle?
Disappointed with their update 'roadmap', while MIDI connectivity is desirable, I'd put being able to record the blooming thing as a higher priority.
Looks like it's going to be an awful long wait for me before buying this one.
Hope they hurry up with the lite version. I'd like to give it a whirl.
Wow thanks for the news here. Had no idea. This looks amazing.

Yah three platforms to support too. I will just save my pennies for Beatmaker3.
yes, it looks - and that's about it. As already mentioned there's a strong synesthesia aspect and it's a kind of artwork on it's own.
I see no problem playing it along something else on it's dedicated system and record the audio via analog path.
The complete absence of any guidelines you can train yourself to makes it hard to imagine it as an instrument beyond ambience and drones (imho).
For me it defeats the whole point of using it on an iPad. If I'm mucking about with cables, recording into a desktop or laptop then I might as well just use the desktop version.
The whole beauty of iOS music, and the revolution started by Audiobus is to be able to do everything on one device.
I know from past experience with other apps that don't connect, that I'd just get fed up with the hassle and not use them.
Fingers crossed the dev adds the connectivity it needs.
Let's revisit in three weeks....when it will almost be the end of June which is after all also the end of the first half of the year. January 1st is always such a deal for folks (understandably) as regards the resets of resolutions, I like to try and do the same reassessments on July 1st as well. I know, completely meaningless, but works for me
@MonzoPro I get your point completely (that same aspect originally was a main point for myself)
but context switching began to annoy after some time.
A bit low on funds momentarily, but otherwise I'd rather mount 4 iPads to a common baseplate with an interface. Not pocket-sized, but with no outer cabling. /ot
I'm just tetchy with this one because I really like it, and want to get my hands on it. Don't want it to become another Skr#m.
Though there will be a wait anyway, because the washing machine has just packed up, and apparently that takes priority over iOS synths.
Hygiene is a scam perpetuated by the man.
I've explained this to Mrs Monzo but she's not having it. My temporary fix to our 17 year old washer/dryer has given up the ghost, so my wallet is due a hammering.
Shoot, it's a lazy Saturday, I'll take the plunge if @brice can confirm the crackling is under control?
