@brice don't mind the crashes too much, I can do that with any Apesoft/Amazing Noises app - or rather whenever really sick parameters are 'allowed'
no risk - no fun ;)

This is very true, my friend.

    Latest post from dev...

mazetoolsUPDATE 1.03 IS ON THE WAY
we added a record function that records directly into WAV files. I already recorded whole songs with my small moto Phone. We re still improving the accessibility of the saved files and will add midi/osc In/out in the further updates. C U

That's a nice stepping stone, and will certainly be taken advantage of....but I hope that doesn't end the quest for @mazetools This app desperately needs the ability to be processed through external effects in this environment, in real time, as a way to sculpt and design its output. Doing it after the fact with exported WAV files isnt always as productive in my opinion. Either way, I am very happy to see the progression thus far.

  • I'm waiting for the update with recording before buying. Great news

  • Where is the manual for this?

  • I was going to wait until this at least recording, but I knew I was about to head out motorcycle camping and thought this would be awesome to play with in my hammock in the forest by a campfire.

    Should find out tonight. :)

  • Hope that forest wi-fi works!

No wifi, but I've got a couple solid bars of LTE :) (unfortunately - was hoping to be forced cutoff from all news for a few days)

Oh man.....Jealous! You're going Bon Iver style. Turn your cellular off and get into it. Have fun!

  • @sincopatyc those crashes will hopefully be solved with the next update.

@Carnbot and @skiphunt the sound recording support is for iOS and Android, and it's really possible to record whole songs and maybe whole sets, depending on the RAM and free space in the storage.

@Mayo Thank you, really glad you like it :)

@brice You're right, we're still working on the stability of the app. The difficulties lay often in the many combinations and events going on in sound and visual. The problem in changing sound generation parameters in the core of the sound processor is, that every set/song the people made, would sound different. So when we make changes we must make sure, that it is only for improving it and we will improve the squaric distortion to get the distorted sound more equal to the basic drawn shape than to a square.

To all that got it already: Thank you very much for purchasing Soniface and supporting our work and concept, we'll do our best to get all the connections you need ready soon as possible. This upcoming Update will add a basic record to *.wav function. This will be need some further improvements to work for example with audioshare. Now the files will be saved in the folder of the app, but this will be improved soon to make the files better accessible and make them directly usable for further production steps.

@brice and @JohnnyGoodyear By improving the accessibility of the user files created with Soniface, we'll also add the Sample-Import function. This will be a useful thing, cuz the samples can than be used as soundscape samples, can be used with the drum sequencer, or with the grid.

@idexis Thanks for your feedback, we're already working on the platform specific features like Audiobus Connection, InterAppAudio, MIDI/OSC or Ableton Link

Thanks again for this good and constructive feedback, we really appreciate it and will do our best to keep it up, getting it better :)

  • It REALLY needs a manual - the vids are cool, but a PDF / downloadable manual is needed.

Or a Haq Attaq tutorial please!!!!

Without a manual explaining how it all works is like stumbling around in the dark

    • I have spent quite a few hours with it trying to work out stuff, having to search through the videos for info... instead of making music!

I'm totally into this app and where its heading - especially with sample import / Audiobus.

Yes I really should get around to setting up a soundcloud account soon and getting stuff finished. :)

Pardon my ignorance, but I'm not sure why internal recording is a priority above IAA/Audiobus connectivity. To me it makes sense to add the connectivity first, as we can all then record into the app of our choice (DAW, Audioshare etc.) as well as the other benefits connectivity bring. Then I'd add the internal recording option as an extra for those who want it.

That way you tick two things off the wishlist (recording, connectivity) rather than just one.

I can't speak for other fence-sitters, but this functionality is the thing holding me back from diving in.

Thank you for checking in with these updates. The fact that you guys check this site / thread and take the time to comment says an awful lot about your commitment and road map. It definitely doesn't go unnoticed around here.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing your app progress and find its place. It has astounding potential in the sound design + performance realm. And I'd just like to echo some of the previous comments regarding some sort of manual being a huge benefit; something a little more paced and descriptive than the in-app help menus. Maybe even just a quick start guide with a glossary of sorts. Or even a video tutorial with voiceover decriptions. I've finally had enough time to devote towards learning what most everything does. But it came with a lot of head-scratching and fumbling around in the beginning. I even lost some pretty amazing sounds due to the fact that I couldn't determine the saving protocol in the moment. Something to consider as I think it would help new users get to the heart of it all much quicker.

@Carnbot a big find for me was the different gestures and control available depending how many fingers you use to swipe and rotate around the screen. Try it - 2, 3, 4 etc give different results triggering controls like reverb, vibrato. My music leans away from drone and cinematic towards a harder edge so I pushed this app and was impressed with the results. You can set different tempos for each sound, rythmn and automation :)

I'll try that, thanks. I like it has a kind of song mode, where you can play your different scenes in sequence. But have you found out how to arrange the scenes? Or are they stuck in the order you create them in the set?

    @Trueyorky and @Carnbot
After following your discussion I got Mazetools. It's very interesting and will only get better when better integration is ready. Fun to dive in and see what happens and gradually learn to handle the instrument. Thanks for focusing on what's in the app so I could decide.

Great news, I hope you enjoy the app too :)

  • @brice I've to say that the fact that you guys see the potential and give us really good feedback is for us a big honor.

@Mayo and @brice You're right it is really hard to get into it without a manual or tutorials. Our plan is to get things online in july like video tutorials that are focused on single functions and their effect in combination with other functions/parameters. For example when we show how to work with the "Shape Face", we'll also show how to modulate in combination with other parameters like vibrato, room, distortion etc. And we will put up a manual, that gives an overview about all the functions and how they are connected to each other.

@Monzo i know exactly what you mean, because the workflow on a device is there and we only have to plug it in. This is important and true, and it's not ignorant ;) One thing you may also noticed is, that Soniface is a Crossplatform Software. So we talk about two different things. What you mean is platform and workflow specific connectivity, and the simple feature to record sound as wav workes on every platform (Android, IOS, WindowsPhone, Soon MacOS, Soon Windows). It is a feature that everybody can use, if musician or not, if ipad or android or even windowsphone. We're nearly finished with the crossplatform stuff and will then put Soniface into a Shell with a lot of INs and OUTs to get plugged to platformspecific features.

For us it is important to get all the important connectivity on the plan. Also VR and MotionTracking is a big topic for us and already tested since 2014. For example we used LeapMotion and Kinect for modulating sound and performing music, or in 2016 we tested Soniface as a mobile VR App with results and concepts to make us planing for the future ;) Maybe this sounds a bit megalomaniac, i think it's more about to get things connected (even different platforms or devices), to see and use our potential/opportunities and to be creative.

Thank you for your feedback ;)

Awesome :) Yes it has a lot of potential this one.

Thanks for the communication @mazetools I look forward to connectivity and Link to sync it etc. It needs background audio added too. :)

Ah ok, I didn't factor in the cross platform stuff, thanks for pointing that out.

It's telling that in a forum that's all about connectivity, lots have already dived in and are enjoying the swim so you've obviously got an excellent app there.

I guess I'm just impatient for that connectivity, as it's the only thing stopping me from jumping in too :)

    Fair.

  • Gonna get this eventually, still intrigued a few weeks later. Mr. Ripple gets my money this week though.

  • Took the plunge, but unfortunately had to ask for a refund 30 minutes later. The app update mentioning reduced clicks/noises sold me, but alas they haven't been reduced enough. I couldn't even make it satisfactorily through the tour.

Sorry devs, it seems you have an ear to the ground and have responded positively, but I'll have to bin this and maybe keep an eye on it in the future. For now, I don't think it's an acceptable product despite its good intentions and good looks.

  • Anybody run this on iPhone yet? How's that?

What are you running this on? You also reported that you couldn't run more than 2 instances of Mood in AUM without overrunning the cpu. Yet, I was able to run 4 instances via Steps in AUM and the Air 2 didn't even break a sweat.

I'm running Soniface on an Air 2 10.3.2 and have not noticed any "clicks or noises" at all. Runs smooth and clean.

@db909 ran it on iPhone SE. Runs very well but the controls are very hard to see in a display that small. It's definitely doable. Hard to do the 4 finger gestures unless you lay it down on a surface.

  • No major issues here using iPad Air 2 iOS 10.3.1

While just scrolling around on the screen, seemingly random, and also when selecting a parameter to change on the circle menu. No other app running and had just restarted after i experienced the noise the first time. After the restart it still messed up so I immediately applied for a refund. Spent about 15 minutes with it total.

@skiphunt That kinda troubles me, I had actually forgotten about the low Mood tolerance. I'm on an Air 2, the next-to-last update...10.3.1 I guess. Maybe its time for a wipe and fresh install.

iPads are weird - we can all be on the same model and OS but some have issues and others don't. I've reported stuff on here, and everyone says it's fine, and I get crash city. Other times it's the opposite.

I have found though that some new apps take a while to settle in, and after a few reboots work better.

I do hard resets fairly regularly, and I try to keep a minimum of 10gb free space available.

This is a strange and wonderful app. I don't have full control of it at all yet though. It can start sounding very interesting, and then I make one wrong move and it quickly heads down hill. Or, I'll get just the right combination of nodes interacting and it'll just sound incredible. I'll have no idea what I did right.

The other night I was laying in my hammock in the forest. Lots of locust, crickets, and other variations nitghtime sounds. I was near my campfire so I could hear it crackling in the virtual mix as well. Had a bluetooth speaker set on a camp table with the volume turned up and had got just the right nodes going in Soniface.

It was magical. But, I sure wish I could've recorded some of that from Soniface. Just had to surrender to the moments and enjoy the experience without trying to capture it.

  • edited June 2017

There are some distortion noises and small clipping rumbles which occurs sonetimes (not sure of what's causing it) which I hope can be improved but otherwise there's a good sound engine here.
I hope more access to the synth can be possible one day. I do save sets regularly when I want to record it later. Would be beneficial if you could name sets too as the abstract circles look nice but not easy to remember which set is which etc :)

  • Soniface updated with recording function. love this app, Link and midi next hopefully and then Audiobus 3?
