Hello all. Fancied something a bit different this month. Have some friends that have a 3-piece band playing around the Bristol area. I asked them if they had any tunes in a stem format (they usually record live). They had an old demo knocking around and so I nicked the midi and the vocal and then made something a bit different out of it. Reasonably happy with it. Needs a bit of proper mastering as it’s come out a little dulled. They seemed happy but I don’t think it’ll get much of an airing as they’re primarily guitar and keys. Still I feel I learnt a lot doing it. All in Auria Pro, the arp from the wonderful Thesys. Find it much easier to turn the vocal level up when it’s not me singing ;-)

@aaronpc this sounds really cool and tripped out. I can't understand the intro if that was vocals. But then vocals came in strong. I like it..
@studs1966 strong piece.. I was listening and I still wanna know how you do this..is it sampled?
@JeffChasteen I really like your entry. Strong and full intro . The synth is kind of random though.. I think it would be better without it..
@marliess reminds me of Devo alot this month. Great mix .. definitely reminds me of Devo. Whip it brother sounds great
@theconnactic I really like the bass . Your a solid bass player. It's my favorite instrument so I listen for it first.. I wish the nylon was a little brighter to cut through little more.. I like it as a whole . Good job
@Shaken&Stirred . Nice... I love it.. I love where your vocals sit.. I think it's a problem we have all had recording ourselfs... I like the delay change speed up effect. Break down is cool as well and guitars sound chunked out.
@richardyot cool song . I can really hear a room, Envirement in the song. I gotta say vocal performance was the best ive heard from you. Vocals sounded great. Good job
@Bartlinux cool entry . More soundtrack type of vibe . I feel as if I hit some noz with that second drum beat hitting..
@MonzoPro . Tripped out intro and fade into more robotic trip tombs distorted in time with a snare chopped faded into reverbed delayed circuty.. I'm confused .. but caught my attention
Mr @Bluepunk change of pace huh. What a trip. Vocals sound clean.. almost wanna hear you let loose a little more.. sound suppressed. Or as if your recording next to Grandma's room and your trying to keep quiet.. that one part had more aggression.. but I still want more attitude.. like fuck you Grandma your gonna hear this too to f. . Off!!!
@bluepunk was just reading you saying how you couldn't find an effect... I think this song calls for a microphone into a tube driver out a megaphone and miked up. Along with the attitude . Let the feedback goooo. That's my take on it.
@crouchie I really like this very relaxed feel to it. I thought it was gonna be some dub step type.. vocals sound great. Good performance .. I'd like it a little higher in the mix. We all do this though since we record ourselfs there's a bunch of songs out there that would benefit from a producer.. this song wasn't the prime example cause vocals do sound nice
Cheers. Can't believe you picked up on that because yes, the vocal recording window was only open between 2am and 4am the other morning and had to drop a level. And both you and @aaronpc are so right because listening again, I can hear vocal lines where effects SHOULD have been applied to add some depth, mania and fun. I have learned from this and for that I thank you both kindly.
@Bartlinux _ I enjoyed this overall although I do think you could have made a much 'bigger' mix by giving some of the elements their own frequencies to work in with some EQ'ing and volume adjustment...drop the bass and lead synth a little to give more space for the stuff that seems to be pushed back behind them......a few well placed 'Gremlin' samples would lift this too
Overall a good job
@Trackedout Great track The vocals were Numanesque, great bass and good structure..some of the vocal panning was a bit extreme and the cymbals did seem to wash out everything else when at full tilt though and I think the drum outro was too long....outro the bass riff with a sudden stop...would intice me to instantly listen again.
Great job
My first submission, here or anywhere (unless you count playing my originals in a band a number of years ago "submissions"). I'm working with a piano/songwriting student on developing some of her compositions; I'll take her chords, melody and lyrics, add some other things here and there, and arrange them into a more fleshed-out piece in the DAW. I started this one out in Gadget, but ultimately moved everything over to Cakewalk Sonar on the desktop. Verses and chorus hers, bridge, production and arrangement mine. Hope you all enjoy...
I was hoping to embed the video in the post, but looks like it just copied the link. Oh well...
EDIT: Fixed
@Monzopro I really liked this one, some good sounds, and samples. The riff? running through it kept it going and had a nice upbeat feel to it, it doesn't sound like two jams put together it sounds like one cohesive piece.
@MonzoPro Enjoyed listening while I made the morning coffee. Kinetic, but not overly so. At first it doesn't seem like it goes anywhere, but if you just let it sink in, it actually does. Clicking around afterward confirms it. Very different than the stuff I tend to do, but that's my problem. Made me wish I was more the jamming type sometimes. Need to work on that.
@trackedout I guess I prefer V2. I miss some of the muddle from the first, especially the more cacophonous intro, but this one is more on point overall. I agree with @marliess about the outro, but I don't think I would ditch it altogether. I want to hear more wayward guitar noodling in the background or studio sounds— talking, random crashing, stuff like that. I do think the cymbals are laying it on a bit thick at times.
Hey, I like the energy of this track - it reminds me of some stuff I used to listen to in the 80's and 90's. Most of the lyrics I can't understand, especially the chorus. Also I think the vocals could line up a little better with the rhythm section to tighten things up, but that could be intentional, as it is sometimes in this genre. Also, I'm not a fan of so much cymbals, but that's a personal preference. I think the song has potential if the vocals were brought out more, and maybe the drums mixed a little differently. More snare, less cymbals, IMHO, ofc.
@Shaken&Stirred hey thanks for your feedback..they won't remember me . Over and over.i agree about the cymbals but what's done is done n time to move on.. that's what hopefully makes the next one better
@aaronpc hey yeah that's an interesting thought. As for v1 didn't do it for me much... Energy was focused more on one thing as opposed to v2. I appreciate your input
@studs1966, the first mix is my preference. Well done on the mix, as everything is clear and has it's own space. Love the bass sound and the congas/bongos/percussion. Also like the way the electric piano just kind of stabs in there now and then. Only recommendation I'd have is to nudge the bass timing a little, as it doesn't sound like it's quite lining up with the drums and percussion. Nice job!
@aaronpc, a little odd but I actually really liked it! A few things that jumped out at me, in a good way: The panning on the hi hats, the little bit of distortion/grunge that opening synth sound has, the chord progression (I'm a big fan of the minor iv), and the way the vocal harmonies combined with the synth almost make it sound like a vocoder. This might sound a little over the top, but I thought to myself that if the Beatles were making music on an iPad, I bet this is what it would sound like!
@JeffChasteen, even though it gets a bit chaotic in spots, I think you got the plaintive quality across. I think that's primarily due to the chord progression (that I-iii-IV really does it, and then to lead on to the V-vi), along with the blend of the 2 synth sounds that are providing the chords. The beginning almost sounded Irish to me, and then you dropped that sound more into the background, which I thought was cool. Really the only 2 things that didn't quite do it for me were the higher "whistling" synth sound sort of meandering over top of everything, and the abrupt dropout at 2:04, but I could certainly understand why some people would absolutely love it. All in all, a very creative effort that was enjoyable to listen to!
@marliess, think you got the '50s vibe pretty good. I thought the panning of the guitars worked really well with the bass and the drums, just a good clean '50s rock mix. Cool syncopation on the word "trampoline", especially with the bass and guitar emphasizing that quirky little rhythm while the drums keep chugging along. Only little nitpick - I wanted a guitar solo!
@Bluepunk, that was fucking BRILLIANT. Lol, my god. What a mix, the manic energy, the great sounds and arrangement. Perfect for the subject matter. That would have been top of the charts when Mr. Rotten et all were scampering about.
@crouchie, love that. Not sure about “dulled”, sounds pretty full to me. Overall mix is very nice, everything in a perfect place. That voice like sound, really quite, sounds fantastic. Background vocal sound is very cool. Nicely done, kudos to the band.
