Was thinking about this while on a run this morning, and it occurs to me that actually overtly political songs tend to have a very limited shelf-life. "California Über Alles" — the Dead Kennedy's screed against Governor Jerry Brown (!) — and its "jazzier" update for Reagan, "We've Got a Bigger Problem Now," are kind of just agitpop curiosities. I'm not sure they'd resonate with anybody who didn't live through the 80s.
But a song like "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" — while arguably political, it's more about social justice. And it kills me every time I hear it, even though the villain is kind of obvious. An even better (and more helpless) song by Dylan about injustice is "Percy's Song."
That said, I had my political mind formed by "Washington Bullets," by the Clash, which put forth a shocking proposition in 1980 but is commonplace today. And that one I think survived its era and is more true than ever.
You have pinpointed the problem with most political songs; they do indeed become agitprop curiosities and in turn, nostalgia triggers.
There is also the responsible use of power by rock musicians, without lecturing. I’m thinking if Springsteen’s words before the live version of ‘War.’ A song that is as valid now as it was when first released.
For those who may not have heard it, the last thing he says to the audience before launching into song is_ “Blind faith in your leaders, or anything, will get you killed.”_
A song my dad played me a lot growing up, had a bigger impact than I realised, wasn't till I was much older that it dawned on me what the old fruit was up to.
“If woodie Guthrie were alive today, he’d have a lot to write about”
This is Springsteen giving a short “political” talk before a very good political song.
Added bonus of some awesome Tom Morello guitar where he pretty much shows off all of his signature skills but still keeps it very musical. Watch it till the outro solo it’s worth it :-)

Love Harry Chapin. The most altruistic rock star ever, and a great songwriter, too.

I remember when Thatcher was literally trying to starve striking miners into submission, Brooooce donated thousands of pounds to their families.
Here’s one for the Iron Lady as well then.. :-P

Ah, Chumbawumba. At a Brit Awards, ISTR, they emptied a bucket of ice water over Champaign socialist deputy PM John Prescott.
Great.
You will agree
Agree with me
While I count riches, I starve your family
So understand it’s society
That makes you seem useless
Reports the press
It’s in the news
That boys just lazy
He ain’t got the blues
We will make him feel worthless
Rise up taxpayers
Shout loud and cruel
Cos it’s you that’s paying for their bed and gruel
Point him to the rock and the rock breakin’ tool
Beat him ‘til he’s lifeless
It’s the way it is!
It’s the way it be!
Your future is just a depository
For the wealth of the few, it can’t change for me
With alternatives they gain less
A product count
Won’t let you see
Capitalism - nihilistic hypocrisy
But you sold your soul, so let them be
As the rich they couldn’t care less

Powerful words, Fruitbat. Would be good to hear the other half, the music to back it up.
If only I wrote music that was suitable for these sort of words. My music is kinda repetitions and movements of noise lol

Ah, this is where collaboration has an advantage. Here is the lyric to another political song from the new RTM album.
It is aimed at the political classes in general, not any one politician or party.
Below the words, a link to the track itself.
HAIL VICTORY
There's a modern-day Moses on the BBC
laying down the law for you and me
He's got rules enshrined
on tablets of stone
and the voice of God on his mobile phone
He's telling all the good boys
not to raise their voices
and to be sure when it's time
to make their final choices
It's terrorism by trigger-word
designer style
Snappy dressing no messing
and a whispered, seig heil.
Things always look better,
Moses tells the elite,
when you're looking back.
Pumping out a litany
of immoral ticks and crosses
He's looking at the balance sheet
and cutting down his losses
Winding the wheels that grind
he's palming secret looks
While making education cuts
and banning certain books
Winkle-picking brothel-creeping
sodomy and rum
Duplicity is waved across the printed page
waved like a semaphore flag
These days it's getting hard to tell
who's for real and who's in drag
And a whispered seig heil

Don't worry about that. Guthrie borrowed "Goodnight Irene" for almost a dozen of his own songs, and did pretty good.
Actually I do have a piece I’m making in AB3 at the moment. It’s early days, but it just might work in a very non commercial way lol. I do need to buy a mic though!
