Just concerned about it backfiring. Like if everyone that was vaguely interested in buying it or planning to buy it..or people that would have bought it in near future after hearing of updates.. If they're ALL grabbing it for free this weekend. And then everyone else decides to forever be waiting until it's free again. Then intua go bust or resort to subscription...

I don't mind that other people are getting it free. Doesn't affect me. Only concern is there being a future for the app and the pricing model.

No point stressing about it for now though. Like I mentioned before, I'll occasionally be jamming on BM3 with all my nieces and nephews from now on when I visit them. Good times :)

That’s a fair point. But i don’t think it will. The app is of high quality and anyone who missed the Free Namm Days offer and sees it in the future will probably be interested in it because of the future praise it will receive from more users sharing their love for the app.

This is just a calculated and strategic marketing move and i respect @mathieugarcia of Intua for having the guts to do this.

4 days of going hungry to feed potential artists out there who are on the cusp of potential greatness. I know we’ll hear many stories in the near future of how this offer unlocked someone to create the next great indie album, or gave them the tools to truly soar as a musician.

When we give of ourselves for others great things manifest in the world.

Yeah it's nice to think that BM3 will end up in lots of kids'/teens' hands now that it maybe wouldn't have before. Very cool from Intua :) I remember driving to buy an 8 track tape deck when I was a kid. Dude ended up giving it to me for nothing. So I had enough money to buy enough mics to start recording bands. Dunno if I ever would have got to that stage otherwise, most of my money was going on partying at the time :/

Generous from intua. Hope it works out great for everyone!

Yeah, it's amazing what happens when a person with passion, but restricted funds, is given an opportunity to embrace a dream. Guess it's time for all of us to become mentors and youtube trainers for all the new people jumping on board :)

Oh man... it would be sweet if they had Sounds.com integration in app. Yum! Oh wait, that is Native Instruments, heh, nevermind.

Unfortunately, much as i love BM3, i fear if it goes subscription, you may find yourself being in a club of one.. There is no way that i will ever pay a subscription for any software on any platform.. The simple reason for this, is, that i couldn't possibly afford it. I have been making & recording music since before the rise of the computer, and i can easily re-invent how i do it, without being in monthly hoc to a bunch of software developers. ( much as i respect their amazing products ). I can use hardware kit to produce music just as easily. I only got on-board the ios platform for the ride......i can just as easily get off again..........

    +1

I really hope you don't end up sitting there all on yer tod, but the thing is, subscription models work well for medium -large business's, but not for individuals I just don't see how anyone will be able to sustain monthly/yearly subscriptions, unless they are relatively wealthy. What about musicians in less wealthy countries..........no chance at all of them being able jump aboard unless they are in the upper income bracket. I live in one of the wealthiest countries in the world (U.K.) and wouldn't be able to afford it, so no chance then, for a huge percentage of the worlds population. This is aimed at Devs really, not you Gus. INTUA if you are listening, PLEASE don't go down the subscription path........looks like commercial suicide to me.........or at the very best, an exclusive product, for a few entitled individuals........> @AudioGus said:

  • It's three days, people.

They're hoping to expose their achievement to a wider audience so they can continue rapid growth, and NAMM is just the place to make a splash. It takes a lot to get people's attention in such a competitive market. If this does what they hope, it'll work out for everyone— even those poor souls like me who bought it already.

As for the "paid model is dying" comment, I suspect they may go subscription, but only for the sample store (see Auxy), since most kids don't have the patience to make their own kits. Based on their history, I'm not worried about Intua yanking features like the Auxy guys, but once BM3 is on iPhones later this year, millennials will be slurping up sample subscriptions like Tide Pods.

    Good app, crap marketing department.

I get where you’re coming from, but I also don’t think it’s that punishing. It’s based around NAMM, and for only 3 days will they be offering it for free. Were it a week or more, around any given holiday, perhaps something less appropriate of a venue to promote such an offering than NAMM, then I could get on the same page. But for now, I really don’t see this move having any effect on the perceived value they’ve established with BM3.

Doesn’t matter if it’s 3 weeks, 3 days or 3 hours. The app price trackers will have recorded the lowest price for posterity.

They’ve set a precedent that savvy buyers won’t ignore.

It's unclear whether giving the app away is the best way to achieve saturation.

You’re absolutely right mate. You and the 3-5 other users who join you would continue to enjoy Beatmaker 3 whereas I and many others would probably think about it for a second and switch over to iMPC Pro 2 and other apps not requiring the subscription.

I really hope it doesn’t come to that though, because I love Beatmaker 3 too much. Now that we’re almost on the cusp of an iPhone version of BM3 (which iMPC Pro 2 has none of), I don’t want it switching over to a subscription.

    Hey everyone,

I totally understand the disappointment some of you are feeling (fair enough!) but all this could, and hopefully would, make BeatMaker 3 better in the long run. We have to re-think ourselves and adapt to the iOS market. Let's face it, the paid model is dying.

Let's keep positive and move forward, we will keep working on BeatMaker 3, bringing more improvements & features, as per usual! The NAMM is a great opportunity to try something else. Sometimes it's good to give back to the community and try something crazy. Nothing is set in stone.

We're not ditching anyone, our awesome community supports us every day, but we have to be able to scale up as well with all the great projects we have planned in the upcoming months / years.

    Hopefully, no hard feelings...!

    Sincerely,
    Mathieu.

This will mean more coverage and more publicity and so potentialy more sales after the free period ends???

Who’s going to pay £40 for an app that was free the week before?

    Answer = no-one.

Someone who missed the deal but still needs the package because of its features rather than because its cheap.

They won’t though will they. They’ll wait until it’s free again, or buy something else.

Do you work for their marketing department?

    So the logic is:
    I need BM3 features today
    Last week it was free
So I buy something else at the same price, which won’t fulfill my needs because BM3 isn’t free right now

    You sold me

If you need BM3 features you’ll no doubt either already have it (let’s face it, it’s hardly been kept a secret), or you’ll have been on the fence and jumped on it today.

If you miss the free offer, you’ll kick yourself and wait for the next sale or freebie since a precedent has been established. Only the very desperate will now fork out £40.

Not everyone has bottomless pockets like yourself, some of us shop around. Or wait for a deal.

Just out of interest, what did you pay for it?

Accordingly the App was dying, so I doubt this statement about the loss of revenue.

  • I never cared about BM3. It doesn’t seem to fit into my way of working and composing. Now that I can try it, I may find it useful. Or I may just delete it in a few weeks if my initial feeling of skepticism was correct. Either way, I would never have bought it, but now may become a customer.
If that is what the aim of this giveaway is, then in my case it may have worked. We shall see.

  • I think we’re overestimating the potential buyer. I’m pretty sure it’s only the appoholics here watching deals on app trackers. It seems the only people who have a problem with it being free don’t really love the app anyway. I also think the idea of value is a lot trickier than many people here are assuming. The issue seems to be either one of personal value (i.e., whether or not you value the app) or the value of the iOS ecosystem.

No one can argue with anyone about their personal value for a thing, but the value outside of that is much harder to pin down. Speculation is one thing. assumptions are another.

If it sounds good to me. I was excited when I got free BeatHawk to check out their soundpacks, but honestly didn’t like them a whole lot, so have not bought any of those yet.
But I am excited to see what BM3 is all about. It is obviously a big favorite around here.

I can't reasonably speculate on who else may be out there in the world but the older I get the more I realize I am not terribly unique in the world. For me I just look at it as a time investment. I spend around 16 hours a week using BM3. It is easy for me to imagine spending 10-15$ a month to maximize the 64 hours a month or so that I am spending on making music. It would be silly of me to compromise my efforts when I can afford the best mobile tool I can get for my needs. Sure I may be in a less than 5% (or whatever) club but plenty of niche businesses can operate better catering to fewer rather than many.

Anyway, something like the '1,000 True Fans' or 'Long Tail' in marketing/economics...

  • Maybe a yearly subscription to Apple for use of the app store could work. Say £30.00 a year. Devs would get to keep 100% of any sales, and Apple would get their pound of flesh. It works for Sony on the PlayStation, maybe it could work for IOS. Everyone would be happy (ish!).

Such a strategy presumes people will find their product valuable enough that they’d want to purchase it rather than to wait around for the next give away as well as being able to reach more people than when they originally released BM3.

Timing their give away during NAMM is a way to maximize the exposure for their app via their give away promotion.

I’m sure there’s no shortage of frugal people willing to wait for cheaper options but I don’t think Intua believes they can rely upon these individuals to sustain their company.

Sorry to those who feel aggrieved having paid full price.
Probably worth remembering that several Apps (Animoog, Firo, etc..) have also sold at a 'premium' price then been given away for free or at very low cost if that helps to put things in perspective.
I think most of us here have had the experience of buying something just before it goes on sale or becomes free.

I’m sure there’s no shortage of frugal people willing to wait for cheaper options but I don’t think Intua believes they can rely upon these individuals to sustain their company.

Is the niche within a niche market that big? To make this work? Or is it Flappy Bird to BM3 in one fell swoop. :D

By ‘frugal people’, you mean people with sense, or not much money that won’t pay £40 for something, when it might be free at some point again?

The ‘frugal people’ didn’t realise they COULD wait for it to go free, until today.

    Now they know.

How about thinking like this, all the people who get it for free now will start using it, post on forums, and YouTube.

This will mean more coverage and more publicity and so potentialy more sales after the free period ends???

Who’s going to pay £40 for an app that was free the week before?

    Answer = no-one.

Someone who missed the deal but still needs the package because of its features rather than because its cheap.

They won’t though will they. They’ll wait until it’s free again, or buy something else.

Do you work for their marketing department?

Perhaps one strategy Intua is using with their give away is to provide more people with access to their app in the hopes that other people will be so interested by using it that they’ll tell the people they know who will be so impressed by what their friends are doing with it that they decide to spend their money to buy BM3?

I think they’re hoping to introduce BM3 to musicians who haven’t used iOS to create music before. BM3 requires an investment of time to learn whereas Flappy Bird does not. If Intua feels their current marketing efforts will not produce any more sales, they have less to lose and more to gain with their give away promo provided they don’t alienate too many current customers in the process.
