So here’s my entry for May. This was my most ambitious iOS track to date, with 40+ tracks really pushing the limits of the 2016 iPad 12.9. It’s got an interesting (and moving) backstory, included in the spoiler below so this post isn’t spammed with a wall of text. The song has an extended intro to give you time to read it. :)

Years before we met, my wife had a son born with Trisomy-18, similar to Down’s Syndrome but affecting a different chromosome. Children with this condition rarely live through the pregnancy. He did, though, and was born at full term weighing 1 pound 8 ounces. He lived for 2 weeks, undergoing several surgeries, before dying in her arms at the hospital. This is a loss no parent should ever bear, and it affected her deeply. Some time later, she had a job working on air conditioner electronics for large installations, and she was assigned to work on the a/c in this same hospital. She spent days in the basement, feeling the weight of the tragedy press down from the room above. Then a strange thing happened. She began to feel his presence around her, comforting her, letting her know that he would never leave her and would always be watching over her. And while finishing her work in that place, she sang this song to herself. It is surprisingly hopeful and upbeat, and it has been with her ever since. Fast forward (a lot) to a few months ago, and she gave me a Voice Memo of her singing it, asking if I could do a full piece around it and record her singing it. I hope I did it justice. She likes it very much, and I suppose that’s the most important thing.

Edit: Forgot to say that despite the emotional attachment to the song (or maybe because of it?), I’m interested in feedback especially regarding the mix. I’d like this to be included in the album I’m working on, hopefully finishing up next month, so anything I can do to improve things I’m completely open to.

Wonderful! I mean it’s emotionally loaded but I think your arrangement complements it beautifully. Love the retro synth sounds. She’s a good singer too, eh?
I really liked the mix, although Soundcloud always has a way of squashing everything. It feels full without being crowded. I don’t know if the vocal just needed something to make it sit a little more comfortably in the mix, feels like it might stand out a little bit too much, but to be honest I have no idea what I’m talking about!😉
Really enjoyed it though, well done!

Blimey! It's May already......... :o Anyway, once again, 2 mixes of the same song.... I bet @richardyot will prefer the disco mix? :D
Enjoy guys! I hope you like them?....... ;) (I've actually made 6 mixes of this vocals)

Great stuff, as one always expects from your good self. Prefer the first on cos it just feels a little less compressed, but what I really like about the 2nd one is the sense of space you create in the mix. It really feels like it expands to fill the space given to it. Wish I could do that... 😔
    Really enjoyed them though, brilliant.

    My entry for the month:

Liked it a lot. Visuals always work for me and you chose well again. You’ve done a bit of auto-tuning on the vocal yes? If so I think it really works very well. Gives it an other-worldly feel that fits the tune perfectly (possibly a little quiet in the mix). This is one of my favourites by you, great!

I posted this on its own, but thought it best suited here.

Here is my second attempt creating a piece since I delved into IOS in December.

My son lost interest so I decided to learn as much as I can. Sunrizer, Beathawk, EOS Reverb, AudioVerb and few other items. Not really Mastered as I am still learning. Used IRIG I/O 49 key. Played live for whole track.

    Appreciate any feedback.

    Thanks!

Is great! Suitably epic feel, goeswith the tile and picture. It builds really well and is consistently engaging throughout. You play it beautifully, makes me feel v inadequate! Great stuff, looking forward to hearing more

    Hi guys,

Sooo...this is the second song I’ve written with my new songwriting partner Johan.
I took care of the lyrics, melody, vocals and Johan did the rest. Our first song Avalanche was an upbeat, hooky affair, this one is..er..the complete opposite I’m afraid, but hopefully still enjoyable. :)

It’s actually the sequel to my own song “Phantom Love” which I posted on here forever ago.

All thoughts are very welcome. Thanks very much.

That’s brilliant, you should both be proud of that! The pair of you are really getting it together well eh? Must say I preferred this one to last month’s one, but that is purely a taste thing, they are both great songs. Your vocal is as strong as ever and the structure, like I said last month, is a real strong point for me. Brilliant, well done

  • Yes, definitely, liked this a lot, right up my street! Bubbling little arp and the percussion, especially early on, is just great. Probably would have left the on-beat snare out, or just shuffled it a bit, but I really got this. Looking forward to hearing more

Don't mind the date, it is the newest/latest I've done:

Sequenced in Auxy, sampled from Blocs Wave, GarageBand iOS and Groovebox. Chopped up everything in AudioShare. The whole shebang was run through Grand Finale. I think that's all the apps under the hood!

Top stuff! Really! When the vocal comes in i even got a little shiver! Got a fantastic contemporary feel. Love the sounds you’ve used. My favourite this month. Will listen to more of your stuff, I’ve got a lot to learn... Great stuff!

this ones made of patterning, groovebox, zeeon and a dab of peyote...

Enjoyed that’s lot, got my head bobbing. Quite Orb-y. Evolves really nicely. Great stuff

This is not a new song, but I spent time remastering it recently. Now I'm deciding whether or not to add it to an upcoming release. I rather like it, but suspect I've been listening to it too long to be the best judge of its value. A simple (and vague) rumination on the songwriting process, thrown together quickly as a freeform exercise of sorts. Lyrics below.

    Feel
    The Sun against your skin
    Feel like a pharaoh's friend
    Without the bloodshed
    Only soapy water

    And Hear
    The people on the screen
    Talk about plants and things
    Like they really mean it
    Without a trace of irony

    The closest thing to meaning
Is when there's nothing you need
    But a meaningful feeling
Is to find something without meaning
    Tear it down
    Build it up again

    The closest thing to meaning
Is when there's nothing you need
    But a meaningful feeling
Is to find something without meaning
    Tear it down
    Build it up again

    See
    See where the highways lead
Watch it from the bumper seat
    As the junkers follow
Leave a trail of wrecks below

    Read
    Magazines while angels weep
Tidal waves lap at your feet
    As the muses
    Choke on air conditioning

    The closest thing to meaning
    When you have everything
    But a meaningful feeling
Is to find something without meaning
    Tear it down
    Build it up again

    The closest thing to meaning
Is when there's nothing you need
    But a meaningful feeling
Is to find something without meaning
    Tear it down
    Build it up again

Suitably psychedelically mad. I really like it. Always love your arrangements. Struggled slightly to hear the vocals at times, but overall I think the level is fine (don’t like ‘em too loud generally). Great!

  • This Club eh? Beautiful people. Had to return to say thanks and dedicate this short stuff to @Jocphone and @JohnnyGoodyear for the last year of music and words. Don’t worry Gaffer and all, yours are coming :) Got together with a family member to form ‘Blue Blood’ to mark the occasion. We were comfortable watching TOTP2 together and (just about) comfortable (I’m on the last warning) with our Art. :)

    The band:

Drums: Definitely The Daughter. 30. She wrote the entire drum track. First one. :)

Drivel: Definitively The Devil. Older. Messed up ‘real bass’. Reverted to ifretless for now.

Delightful tune. Wholly original with great flavours throughout. Meaninglesslyful is wonderfully brought to life with all of the elements at play.

Sorry I'm late to the party. Here's my sub.

Finishing off the second single which will be posted to the channel once it's been polished and uploaded. This will likely end up as a full length album instead of the usual two track EPs. I've done them before on my channel. Anyway if you're into downtempo/lofi/chillout done on IOS this is for you.

Thank you for listening. In this case, Gadget acted only as a sampler and sequencer. All the sounds were derived from Sunrizer.

  • Dreamy groove. Very impressive mix, all them tasty flavours with lots of space.

Hahaha what can I say? Come on in and own the thread with a 1 minute track whydontchanow? Nice one, I’m still grinning

Very cool track. I’m a sucker for the random spoken word audio when thrown in at tasteful spots, which you’ve done nicely. Great job on this chill track!

  • @trackedout said:

I like the intentional “dirty” feel of this. The bass might be a little overpowering for my taste, but that’s just me  Oh, and I wasn’t sure if the 1 minute of hiss at the end was intended or not? Otherwise I really enjoyed this!

  • @obijohn Thanks. Keep smiling.

Touching back story and thank you for allowing us in. Mix wise (for the album) am feeling a light stroke of sheen from a 6" paint brush, not a drenched roller, could be applied to merge/blend/tie the slightly synthy straighty edges I hear through these cheap headphones I'm listening through today. Please bare that in mind and please don't get me wrong because I feel this song in the heart and that is all that matters to this rancid reviewer.

Track length.... yes, please retain the rain, plunder the thunder...and shorten elsewhere. Enjoyed the Pied Piper effects at 3.23 etc, pulling me closer to the soul of your song....follow me......

Positive your LP will be full of emotion and gentle touches. Wish you well with it. A :)

  • I've really enjoyed the submissions for the month of May. I feel privileged to be allowed in the presence of so much talent. My own efforts have been fruitless this month. I think I found all of two days to work on one melody, and the chorus and lyrics, bridge, intro, and coda just won't come together. They're all there, but dammit! I thought about posting some really old material (circa 2009-10) but hey, its all on SoundCloud. Hopefully I will be back in June with something new.

LucidMusicInc I really enjoyed A Sense of Peace.

aaronpc I have to agree that Meaninglesslyful might have the lyrics a little clearer. The percussion and the melody carried this track.

  • @trackedout said:

Guess it's about time I get down to business reviewing. Quiet this month, but wading into the calm waters.

@trackedout This would make a good B-side if such a thing still existed, but too aimless for my favorites list, I'm afraid. Sounds like a fun drunken 3am jam, though. I like how the 80s bass rises out of the mix, but I guess it's probably because everything else is so twittery. Makes for a standout sound.

  • Thanks, @crouchie and others, btw. Kind of figured the vocals were buried. I turned them up already, but I don't think I want them any more prominent, as it they're not my favorite part. Conundrum.

  • @icsleepers I liked this, and always enjoy the use of real world samples. Your choice of instruments sold the whole pretty well for me. My only suggestion may be to not use the jar of marbles one quite so often. Save it so that it stands out more.

  • @trackedout said:

Very good! Really enjoyed this one!
