  • If Apple provide a dongle with headphone jack and lightning connection then all is forgiven. :)

Although just rumour but it looks like the new 2018 iPad Pro will have the 3.5mm headphone jack removed like what happened on the iPhone. This is bad news for us iOS musicians who rely on wired headphones to produce and record music. Bluetooth headphones are no use because of latency and using a lighting adapter is no use if we want to charge the iPad as well as use headphones.

The Irony of calling something ‘PRO” whilst providing only a lighning port and removing the headphone input... just call it the IPad Dongler... because you’ll be shelling out extra $$ to be able to hook it up to anything. My camera connection kit died recently so that’s another $$...

It’s too bad because it’s the best portable music studio available. If only it was more ‘pro’ when it comes to connecting devices...

Cpu, ram, memory, connectivity.. Apple snails pace advances in all areas, except possibly cpu, compared to rest of market. Empires fall....

Yes, just like every year, this year Apple truly is doomed

  • There is not one effing Dongel that provides a 3,5 jack AND a normal lighting (meaning more than only charging) connection.

I guess they will release new AirPods too maybe.
I think people are happy and anyway 99% of the crowd never use really high quality headphones or care about latency when they press play.

Yeah, it's kinda annoying that on the CCK3 the Lightning port is only for charging...

All in all the whole lightning mumbo jumbo is not well thought out for more 'advanced' usage.

That's why I seriously hope to see it go away for good and replaced with USB-C but that would be a big blow to Apples 'dongle sales' which apparently generate quite a bit of cash, especially the Lightning->3.5mm one sell it for $9.99 and costs about $0.5 to manufacture, pure evil profits.(Really do hope Karma strikes back at Apple in a big time).

Then let‘s hope they doesn‘t reduce the battery for a thinner and lighter device or you might get more of these „can‘t power this device“ message when connecting midi keyboard and other controllers.

Annoying it is, especially when you think about drowning 50€ for this thing.
USB c could be the way to go? I doubt it though

  • Rumors are rumors. Let’s do a “what if” instead.

    What I want to do:
Plug my USB midi keyboard into my iPad and play a synth through headphones with better audio quality than the iPad “speakers”.

    Solution 1:
    With a headphone jack:
Keyboard —> CCK —> iPad lightning, and headphones in the jack.

    Solution 2:
    Without a headphone jack:
Powered USB hub (tethered to a power outlet) —> CCK —> lightning port
Midi kybd and “small audio interface” plugged into USB hub
Headphones connected to the audio interface.

Solution 1 is mobile. Solution 2 requires power for the USB hub, so NOT totally mobile. While Solution 2 is doable, it adds 2 pieces of gear to carry to accomplish the same thing.

Progress is usually defined as something getting BETTER. Solution 2 may slightly improve audio quality. Solution 1 provides true mobility and fewer connections.

Btw, rumors are sometimes accurate. As for whether we should be able to complain about things that may negatively impact us, I thought that’s one of the things AB has so generously provided us a platform to do.

It would at least make things a bit easier and reduce the amount of dongles.
With a Powered USB-C hub the iPad would get charged and at the same time have access to plenty of USB-C ports for audio-interfaces, midi-devies, usb flash-drives, usb-c > hdmi etc. etc. and it could all be powered from a mobile power-bank when needed.

Just use a small audio interface with headphone oits - problem solved, with the plus of professional D/A.

How useful is an iPad that I cannot simply take on the couch to make some music?
Wired headphones are perfectly fine, but an external audio interface plus another cable just isn't.
I have a great laptop for the above, and it does its job much better than an iPad.

  • @Max23 said:

they removed the headphone jack from the phone because ppl keep on dropping their phones into the toilette, I guess.

Wouldn't the headphones help to catch the falling phone before it gets wet?

Never ceases to amaze me how quick people on here are to want to denigrate Apple based on rumours.

If Apple are so rotten, don’t buy the products. If enough people agree with you they go out of business.

Unfortunately, only a minority use the iPad for music production and the headphone jack so I doubt there would be enough people to go against this decision for Apple to go out of business.

I know it’s just a rumour but negative rumours usually become a reality with Apple. I’d stop buying Apple crap if only the apps weren’t so damn good that 3rd party devs create for the iPad.

+1 Hope that ARM processors in Windows will really take off so we can use BitWig and FL Studio with all plugins that we want on tabletswith all connectivity that have power for 20 hours +

  • I stopped using the headphone port on my iPad once I realized how much better the lightning port audio sounded.

    Using the 'Apple-Dongle' or a dedicated audio-interface?

I can't hear any difference between the Air 2's built-in jack or the Lightning->3.5mm adapter other than that the sample rate gets 'forced' to 48K when using the lightning dongle which causes issues with apps that have problems adapting to different sample-rates.

On the other hand the UR-242 puts both those to shame, feels like one has tons of cotton in the ears in comparison :)

Definitely with audio interface, though I also recall being surprised by the lightning dongle as well.
But now I only use lightning EarPods for casual composing and plug into an Apogee Duet interface for more serious sessions

3rd party devs choosing crap. Creating damn good apps on crap. Something doesn't quite add up there. Unless everything everywhere is crap, and that's all devs have to perform their miracles on.

So some much better company is going to come along and bring us great stuff. Apple gets pushed harder and is forced to jump through more hoops to please us. Sounds great.

It's harder to deliver products than to promise them. Is the grass greener on the other side of the hill? Today, it is not.

Except that a major reason for doing music on the iPad - for me, anyway - is that I can lie on the couch with the device and a set of headphones. If I was prepared to set up a pile of gear I'd probably just go downstairs and use a real computer.

I don't have a problem with Apple getting rid of obsolete ports and features, but I do wish they'd do it when the replacement technologies actually work. Bluetooth headphones seem to offer a choice of high latency or bad sound at the moment. I've tried a few, and none are really up to replacing wired phones. And, the Lightning port has never really been up to it because you can't run a lightning hub, allowing multiple Lightning devices. And even then, the Lightning to minijack adapter I had (because it's gone who knows where) which came with my 7 crackled when it was moved.

In the case of the supposed loss of iPad headphone jack, I really don't get it: losing it on the iPhone did have benefits, waterproof phones being the most significant, but who needs a waterproof iPad? And iPad sales are apparently not that inspiring, so why piss off a group of your users for no real benefit?

Nope, just it’s users :) People will buy Apple for a good many years yet even if they sucked undeniably. Which isn’t quite the case yet, though almost...Surface Go is potentially a significant new kid on the block from my POV...depending on performance...hopefully spells the beginning of better times for everyone tho. Competition breeds functionality etc...

The Win10 platform that the Surface go will run on has been out for years, and no quality music creation apps exist for it. Why do you think another MS attempt at hardware will change the software situation?

Yup not too keen on facial recognition. Willingly hand over all the intricacies of my face and simultaneously convince myself I’m free in a evil surveillance state.....

  • Is there a way to turn off facial recognition?

If it's all just a rumor, this mystery will be gone. Or maybe Apple has a good mobile solution coming that gets rid of the headphone jack but still allows use of regular headphones. I don't know. May be best to just wait and see.

No, but I have one of these:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0755BH2ZR

and it works with my iPhone and lightning headphones, or a lightning to 3.5 jack adapter. (Keep losing the 3.5 jack adapters tho...)

I rarely use it since I mostly use the iPad though.
