Wrt showing notes / fret numbers on strings... I started looking into this but realized it would be somewhat useless since many of guitarism's built-in chords are structured in physically impossible ways for actual guitars, and there's some 'proprietary magic' on the notes too. @mgmg4871 I suggest printing out some chords charts and keeping them next to you - much cleaner way to address that problem :)

Wrt finger-picking and smart strings - guitarism allows multi-touch for up to 5 touches on the strings, but there is currently a bug with multi-touch on smart strings that I need to fix. @Ryan I think once I fix this smart strings bug, it should allow you to finger-pick the way you're thinking.

As for strings being further apart - yeah it's very cramped even though smart strings uses the entire width of the phone. ipad support will help. one interesting thing with native ipad support is that the default width of strings on ipad will become smaller. right now people run guitarism in 2x mode on ipad, which pushes the strings too far apart for a good strumming sound, though far enough for a somewhat decent finger-picking experience. I cringe every time I hear it because it's just not how strumming is supposed to sound. so native ipad support will fix the strumming sound by bringing the strings closer together, but finger-picking will no longer be as easy on ipad without smart strings. all the people who don't have smart strings right now and are doing finger-picking on an ipad in 2x mode will be mad at me cos I took away their ability to finger-pick. on the flip side once you enable smart strings on ipad you should have enough space to have a really great finger-picking experience.

Definitely yes on midi support, in and out. Warning: it will be a pretty hefty IAP.

@Rhism actually I noticed just now that the finger picking works the way I wanted on iPad. Just not on iPhone. Been playing the iPhone reach around style but it's way better 2x on the iPad. I think that's why @PaulB didn't understand why I was asking for that. LoL sorry Paul, my bad. I gotta disagree with you on the 2x strumming sounding worse Rhism, I think it sounds better tenfold, maybe we have different strumming styles ;-) i'm going to make a demo video here in the next couple days. Although I wish there was a sexy acoustic skin for that. Wink wink nudge nudge. Haha :-))

    How hefty? $999.99? :-o

P.S.- I noticed some of the chords were wrong and in some cases impossible. Still sound good, just throws me off a little sometimes, especially when doing the bass note strumming style, like country music.. A good feature might be custom chords, where the user gets to define each string manually.. I'd like that a lot if it's possible. LoL not trying to overwhelm you just throwing stuff out there.

  • @Ryan Definitely interested in seeing a video of 2x ipad strumming that sounds better than iphone strumming!

Haven't decided yet but somewhere between $10-$20 I think, for midi. Depends partly on how much of midi I cover (its a huge space) and also whether I offer midi in/out separately or as a single bundle. Once I get deeper into it I'll have a better sense.

I've been wanting to add custom chords for a really long time - it's something I would use all the time myself - so that's definitely part of the plan. The full explanation behind the current chord formations is pretty long, but the bottom line is that they sound much better when strumming. Custom chords is a lot more interesting when finger-picking.

So just to recap, my shortlist of next few IAPs / updates is (in no particular order) MIDI in/out, iPad support, more sounds and custom chords. This has in fact been my planned list post-2.2, so it's good validation to see that you guys are asking for mostly the same things I was planning anyway :)

  • @rhism. Your shortlist sounds good. I'll take your advice on finding some chord charts. Actually I think I have an app I can use. Ireal B has a guitar and chord diagram feature. Thanks.

  • Ok. This is my experience using Guitarism's smart strings on an iPod gen 3, iOS 5.1.1.

I have full multitouch on the string area. Wide spacing is the default, and stable if I touch one string at a time. However, it gets less stable, momentarily and intermittently reverting to narrow spacing if I touch multiple strings. If I sweep across a string, the change to narrow spacing is reliable while the contact is maintained. This means that if I do claw hammer style picking, while it is possible, the location of the strings changes while I'm playing, making my execution a little haphazard. Personally, when picking, I'd like a less smart set of strings, so that I can rely on each string staying put. Lol.

  • @PaulB thanks for the detail! Yep that's exactly the bug I was referring to above. Actually the strings need to be smarter, to know to stay put and stable when you're picking, and only revert to narrow when you're definitely strumming. This won't be fixed in 2.21 (ETA next week, fixes a crash) but I'll address it in 2.3 after that.

  • Heh I just said the exact same thing about the smart strings in the Guitarism demo video I made today(still uploading). @Rhism I've had a few crashes on iPad 3rd gen havn't been able to find anything in common with the crashes yet.. seem random..Maybe when playing hard and fast? not sure... Might be an iPhone app porting problem.. I don't know. If i figure it out I'll let you know.

  • @Ryan The crash fixed in 2.21 relates to location services. Try disabling those and see if you're still getting crashes.

  • Cool. Didn't know if you knew about it or not. I'll try that. :-))

Here's that demo video for anyone who wants to look. I demo Guitarism and then play a full song on it afterwards.

@Ryan I'm gonna recommend you for Homeland Security shortlist. Lol. Nice video. Very informative.

    @mgmg4871 LoL thanks man.

btw don't know why that posted twice in a row... weird.

  • One for Homeland Security and one for us, I'm guessing.

  • @mgmg4871 heh, why do you say homeland security? Cause I wanted to feed him a poison chicken and killed my own brother? Or the bomber plane you can see in the reflection? Or a third thing? lol

  • Lol. All of the above.

  • @Ryan you gotta check out WaveMapper. Unbelievable.

  • @Rhism you know when you strike a chord on a guitar and while it's ringing you shake the neck backwards and forwards to change the string tension and make the chord shimmer?

Any chance you could do that by adjusting the sample pitch slightly and having it controlled by finger vibrato on the chord buttons?

  • @PaulB now we're talking.

@Rhism you can call it the "You still want to be Kevin Sheilds, don't you?" in-app purchase. Instabuy for me. :)

  • @ryan thanks for the demo! I was curious about this app. And it's always nice to hear some chocolate and cheese.

  • @ryan I just shared the crap out of that video. Got it running in the background. Great stuff. :)

  • @Ryan Haha love that video :D

@PaulB I tried doing that a while back and it sounded weird so I gave up on it, but it's worth another shot. Do you have a link to a video / audio recording that uses this technique well, so I have good source reference material to be inspired from? :)

  • Er... Nope. Just had the sound in my head and the urge to wiggle a finger to get it.

  • @uglykidmoe Right on. I didn't think anyone here would've heard that song before :-)

    @Sebastian Nice! Thank you :-))

@Rhism Thanks! So did it sound worse then iPhone? :-))

  • Ok, found something.

@PaulB That guy looks like Norm MacDonald. LOL I used to do this too but then someone told me it'll wreck the guitars neck, weakening it. Haven't done it since. :-))

  • Def looks like Norm MacDonald...lol

  • @Ryan Yes strumming sounds better on iPhone :) E.g. http://kamcord.com/v/hPG9Z7Tlv16/

@PaulB Thanks! Extremely helpful, will give this another shot

  • @Rhism heh okay. I found for me the iPhone didn't sound as good. Strings are too close together like playing a child's acoustic. The iPad is closer to a real guitar so it seemed to translate better for me. They are both excellent but I guess it's a to-each-his-own kinda thing as far as to what you prefer. :-))

  • @Ryan Interesting! Surprising, and interesting :) Can you send a video of you strumming a real guitar? I found that my strumming on a touchscreen was slower than on physical strings, which is why moving the touchscreen strings closer together is supposed to compensate for that speed differential.

  • @Rhism I hear you. It was my first reflex to strum slower on the touch screen too but as soon as i start singing i start playing like I do on a real acoustic. It's automatic. I don't think I even need to upload a vid of strumming real guitar, it's identical to what i do in the video above.. You can see when I play Buenos Tardes Amigo that I strum the full chord on the beat and only some of the strings in between. iPhone was just to tight to strum like that. That's the way in which I find it more realistic. :-)
