  • @dwarman Seattle rocks - spent many great years there!

@PhilW Would different pickups (and tone controls) be very important here, especially given that this is strumming, not lead? I don't hear too much music where the strumming guitar changes pickup positions / tone settings on the fly during a song. Lead guitar sometimes, but rarely the strumming. And hyper-customizing your tone will always be about adding EQ / effects downstream via AB. At least that's the way I've approached it so far.

I worry that too many similar-sounding guitar options will overwhelm a lot of the more casual users, and will rarely be used by the 1%, thereby just taking up extra space. But of course, happy to hear more thoughts on this stuff.

  • Firstly, I am no expert, I am a keyboard player, not a guitarist. But there is a difference in tone on a Strat beween each of the three pickups and it would be nice to get a choice. I would personally have no need to change them on the fly, and as you say, other tone controls could happily be in the effect app you are using. Just a choice between the neck and bridge pickups would probably be fine - correct me if I'm wtong, but I believe they are the most used?

  • I like the idea of a 12 string! Rather than 3 strat instruments, I personally rather would see a single Fender strat instrument with pickup setting in the middle setting (over the middle single-coil pickup), and then something like a Gibson Les Paul or some other good-sounding guitar using dual-humbucker pickups. It would be really unfortunate to not include a instrument for distortion. You see, the strat and the Les Paul are two important, distinct-sounding guitars, and it is primarily the pickups that make so much of the difference. You can't fake the difference between the two with distortion effects!

Personally (and I would imagine that any guitarists or anyone who knows anything about guitars or cares about good quality, varied guitar sound would agree), you would be best including the following instruments:

Acoustic (6 string steel) -- already included within the app

    The pack:

Electric with single-coil pickups (ie Fender Strat or similar)
Electric with dual-humbucker pickups (ie Gibson Les Paul or similar)
    Acoustic 12 string

The final two if you MUST cater to the unwashed, uneducated masses (non-musician, non-Audiobus using people who don't know anything about the guitar but always wanted to play one) can be nice distortion-affected versions of the above mentioned Fender Strat and Gibson Les Pauls. An added bonus would be that when you record, record a wet and dry version at the same time and youv'e got both instruments done with half the work!!!

An ideal sixth instrument that could be added to the pack could be either a nice hollowbody electric or a nice Fender Telecaster.

Here's some information that should help better explain what I'm talking about:

    http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/archive/index.php?t-88517.html
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Stratocaster
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibson_Les_Paul
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-acoustic_guitar
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Telecaster

I feel very strongly about the variations of guitars that I've mentioned, and think these would be the best, most marketable guitar instruments you could choose for this instruments pack.

If you made it this far in my message, you must be very tenacious and serious about understanding my opinion! I thank you for listening!

  • @PhilW @Audiojunkie Thanks for the questions and insights.

A lot of things affect an electric guitar sound: guitar type, pickup type, pickup position, pick type, string type, tone controls, etc etc. Too much to try to cover everything, and I knew I wanted to start with breadth before depth. I agree with @Audiojunkie that if I were to include a second electric sound it should be a Les Paul, and if I were to offer a third it should probably be a Tele. Unless I was trying to completely replicate a Strat, in which case I'd want to offer every pickup position and some kind of emulation of tone controls (and get an official license from Fender while I'm at it).

For now I'm going with a single electric sound (plus some processed versions of it) but if there's a lot of demand for more I'd definitely work on those. If everyone just asks for a Les Paul I could add that into the same bundle, if people ask for a lot of different ones I could make a new bundle for those. First I want to make sure I nail the one I'm doing.

I am sure based on past experience that whatever you decide to do, it will be great and an instant "must have"!

  • For a strumming app, acoustic 12 string would be top of my list for additional instruments. I'd even go for mandolin or mandola in preference to electric guitar. I realise these are 4 course instruments, but you can mute the 2 strings you don't need for the simulation. Banjo would also be an interesting possibility.

  • @Rhism Well, I am going to be happily (but anxiously) waiting for the Fender Strat pack, and will snap it up as soon as it comes out, but I want to be first in line to put in a vote for a Gibson Les Paul for your second pack. :-) Thanks for listening to my opinions!

  • @Rhism Here's a thought. You mentioned that you were planning to add a classical (nylon stringed guitar). You've mentioned many times before that most of your Guitarism users use Guitarism for strumming. AFAIK, people don't do a whole lot of strumming with classic guitar--most of it is intricate picking. Might it not be better to do the Les Paul INSTEAD of the classic guitar? It would seem to make more sense to me....

  • @Rhism Sorry to keep posting LOL! I have a question for you regarding audio level management. Is there a way to adjust volume from within the app? For example, if I run DM1 with a beat in the background and just play Guitarism to work out some chord progressions (see, even people serious about Audiobus don't always use it with Guitarism ;-) ), I want to adjust the mix levels, but can't find a way to do it. I didn't see the need for the 3P IAP, but something mentioned higher in the thread made me wonder if it might not work well to control mix levels in a situation like the one I'm describing. Thoughts?

  • Looking back at your original proposal, if you going to offer three sound variations then a nylon string guitar, a 12 string and a Strat is probably the best all round choice. But I am sure there would also be takers for an extended electric pack with other Strat pickups, the LP everyone keeps mentioning, a Tele and a hollow body electric. And then maybe another pack just for PaulB's suggestions! Just trying to make sure you're not bored with too much time on your hands!

  • @PaulB Agreed, since I'm going for breadth I'd prefer to add things like mandolin, banjo, ukulele etc before doing more electric guitars. But of course I couldn't not do electric in the first sound pack, there would be riots :) I do hope the 12-string will be the stand-out among these three.

@PhilW Yes that makes sense - first the core guitars pack (12-string, nylon, electric), then expanded stringed instruments (banjo, mandolin, uke etc) and expanded electrics (les paul, tele, etc).

@Audiojunkie I've been listening to flamenco lately (including at the Audiobus dev meetup!) and really want to be able to do that kind of strumming with nylon. BTW you can adjust guitarism's volume from the settings screen (gear icon off the main menu) or the 3P screen. You don't need to buy 3P to change guitarism's volume from the 3P screen - it's there as a convenience and freebie :)

  • I don't listen to much Flamenco, but am aware of and recognize the style--I wasn't, however, aware that a nylon guitar was used for that style. It makes sense now that you would want a nylon guitar. I've been thinking about your reasoning for the guitar choices you are including in this first pack, and it makes sense. :-) One thing to consider that I hadn't thought of before is that for people like me who are seeking to buy the pack purely for the guitars that I would use in the style of music I would like, having one of the essential guitars in each pack (pack 1 with the strat, pack 2 with the Les Paul) will pretty much guarantee that I buy the second pack, even if I have no interest in some of the other instruments. :-) After giving things a lot of thought, I think you are on the right track and going in the right direction. :-) Just make sure you put out the second pack that includes the LP! :-)

  • Please get lost !!! I'll never buy this software . NEVER !!!

  • @PieterrVos There is no reason to get upset. We all care about you, and there is plenty of hope--I suggest first trying an increase in whatever dosage you are currently taking, and if that doesn't work, there are many new medications coming out on the market that may still help you. You have my complete sympathies.

  • @PieterrVos That's unfortunate. Why not?

  • LOL! what the guh!?!?

  • Read his past post and you'll understand.

  • Yep....consistent.

This is actually steel string but your Flamenco comment made me think of this video. Not really Flamenco but goes from (what sounds to me like) traditional Andalusian guitar to OMFG IT'S MOGWAI in under 6 minutes.

  • @Rhism Don't pay attention to @PieterrVos. He's either a troll or has problems. As was previously mentioned, go and read his posts here. Some of them will be perfectly coherent, while others, like the one above, seem to come from out of nowhere and aimed at causing problems.

  • Also +1 on 12 String being the most important sonic addition to Guitarism.

@rhism are you doing the sampling yourself? If so, multiple mics could be a cheap/easy way to get more sounds out of each session. Thinking something like the difference of a stereo pair of omnis spaced apart out front and a stereo pair of small condensers above pointing towards the 12th fret/sound hole and a large diaphragm dynamic up close just behind the sound hole. Guess that could be a lot of download but just a thought. They're very different sounds and could be generated all at once. +$ for being able to 'blend to taste'. :)

  • I did research @PieterrVos's past, seems like a fairly outspoken fellow :) I'm genuinely curious to know his reasons, if he cares to share.

@syrupcore Pretty awesome video! It's amazing the things people do with a guitar. My brother's actually been the one doing the sampling, he plays better than I do and has all the nice gear. Multi-mic would be possible for acoustics, though for electric it's a direct line signal for an unprocessed sound. I don't really have the sound design skills to effectively offer a 'blend to taste' set of multi-mic'ed samples, mainly focused on trying to really nail one set of samples as best as I can.

  • PSA: guitarism v3.11 has been submitted to Apple, renaming Triple Play to Quadroplay. Fishman didn't like the use of the Triple Play name as they have a product with the same name. I'm not sure if it counts as infringement but I don't want to ruffle any feathers, and Quadroplay is a better name anyway. No other changes in v3.11 - the sounds IAP will be in v3.2 (coming soon!)

  • Thanks for letting us know....I'll probably hold off on updating until 3.2. I'm really looking forward to the IAP! (You already know that, because I pester you about it all the time). ;-)

Still think FourPlay would be better. Lol

  • +1 for fourplay!! ;-)

  • I know, but you know... :)

  • @Rhism Hey Rhism, How are things coming along with the instruments IAP? I'm getting pretty anxious to start using them with a project. :-) AFAIK, they should be ready REALLY, REALLY soon, right?
