  • @JamMaestro It's built inside! :-) @paulb You should be able to run them all with ease. Depending on your device of coarse. I'd say anything 4s or better should be fine to run all the effects at once.. The chain is currently as it appears top to bottom. @Adil?

    I meant " @Rhism " not " @Adil " BTW. lol ;-)

  • @Ryan very nice indeed :) compliments to the chef @j_liljedahl !

Thanks @Ryan. You said 'currently', you just know what I'd suggest for future enhancement, don't you? :)

  • Glad to see you back @Ryan. This is looking great. Will it also be available in the AB. effects slot?

    Awesome @Rhism, @Ryan, and @Audiojunkie.

  • Yes yes yes! Brilliant stuff

  • Just so everyone knows, it works great on my iPad 2, so it should work great for everyone! :-) Also, since the electric is recorded dry, you can use the dry patch and your choice of ampsim if you find you are needing something else. Ultimate flexibility! Also, if you have the Quadroplay Midi IAP, you can use guitars from Sampletank, BS-16i, Soundfont Pro, ThumbJam, etc and control them. Virtually limitless guitar sounds and variations! The guitar muting works great! This is THE ULTIMATE RHYTHM GUITAR app, and it's available immediately! :-D

  • Are you saying you prefer the dry patch to the wet patch?

  • @PaulB For maximum flexibility, the electric guitar was sampled dry (just like a real guitar would be when not plugged into an amp or effects). This allows for the most realistic sound and the most sonic flexibility. With a dry electric, you can amp and effect the guitar with any sound you want. Guitarism has a built-in amp and effects now, so you can use the amp to make the guitar sound how you want it to sound. If you want even more flexibility, you can load guitarism into audiobus and use an external ampsim and patch things up that way too.

So, yes, I prefer to have the ability to play the guitar dry, so that I can use external effects as well.

Or, maybe I'm misunderstanding you? Maybe you are asking if I prefer the "sound" of the dry patch to the wet patch? I will always prefer the sound of a guitar with effects (wet), but I like being able to choose what and how my effects sound, and having a dry sampled guitar allows me to do that. Does that make sense?

  • I think Paul may have been pulling your leg...

  • Oh man! Did I miss another one of PaulB's wordplays? I've never heard that term used outside of the music world....... :-S

  • Ah, I looked it up.... The Urban dictionary can be so handy! :-D

  • Lol. Good explanation anyway, Sean. :)

  • @funjunkie27 no it's not in the AB effects slot.. That is a decent idea though. :-)

  • Looking forward to this! Any indication on pricing for the IAPs?

  • It's funny, I've never been a guitar player in my life, and am frankly quite surprised (and pleased) by how touch-screen based musicianship has been largely championed by guitar players. I would think going from hardware electronics (my old preferences) to touch-screens would drive me further away from things like guitars. Yet apps like this are actually making me consider learning guitar. Nice one.

  • @JamMaestro Luckily I don't know a whit of DSP, so doing it myself was never an option :)

@PaulB I've turned them all on simultaneously on an iPhone 4 and it kept on going. Part of the reason AUFX rocks - super-low CPU usage. Also wrt reordering - I'd love to hear specifics on what kind of order changes you'd want to be able to do. If I do it I'd probably want to make it fully flexible, but the examples are still super-useful to hear.

@funjunkie27 It doesn't (and won't) support the AB effects slot. Think about it this way: there are about 10 AUFX apps worth of effects in guitarism v3.2. Jonatan sells AUFX apps for $3.99 each - and we all consider this a bargain price. If the guitarism effects were to support the effects slot, the IAP would have to be priced super-high and it would compete with AUFX. Both of those are undesirable results - Jonatan and I don't want this to compete with AUFX but to complement it. And I want this IAP to be priced much cheaper, in the "impulse buy" price range, and really be a no-brainer purchase given the wealth of stuff it has inside. So that's why it will never support the AB effects slot.

@mmp Price will be revealed shortly, but like I said I want this to be an inexpensive "impulse buy" price, and it should feel like a no-brainer given everything it offers. I will probably increase the price after the 'launch fever' dies down.

  • @CalCutta stories like that are what makes this worth doing :)

  • Thanks Rhism, it's just that my iTunes account is running low. Will probably pick them up anyway!

It's kinda crazy to realize this has been in the works for 8 months. For the longest time I was trying (unsuccessfully) to make it sound awesome without running DSP in the app. I sampled an electric guitar with each note being already processed through an amp sim (clean tone) and played those processed samples together in the app. But you can't just amp each note separately and then play them together - you need to play them together and amp the result via real-time amp simulation. I didn't know a whit of DSP to be able to do amp simulation, so that wasn't an option. Plus, I was able to make it sound 'decent' and my "casual test subjects" seemed to like the sound as it was, so I was starting to wonder if I was nitpicking too much and should just release it as-is, or stick to my higher quality bar.

Then @audiojunkie started asking about when the update will be done since he wanted to use it in a song he was working on, and I decided to just give him a beta build and let him have at it. Hearing him complain about the same things that were bothering me was what helped me decide that I couldn't ship it until I was personally really happy with it. Which meant I needed to do amp simulation. And I had no idea how to do that.

So I got the crazy idea to ask for help! I started talking with @j_liljedahl and explained my dismal situation, and this gem of a guy basically pushed aside all of his other work for a couple of weeks to build an awesome amp/cab simulator plus a full suite of effects for guitarism. So.... it's basically my fault you guys don't have more AUFX apps right now :) I was already a fan of his work but was completely blown away by how he spun up all these amazing effects one after the other - all when he was just days away from becoming a dad! For that I can't thank him enough, and I hope I can make this more than worth his while and continue to collaborate with him in the future. And I hope to see these effects eventually make their way to the AUFX series too... for all we know this guitarism update may be giving us a sneak peek into the future of AUFX! (Or he may decide to do something completely different - only he knows :))

@Ryan was the same - even though he'd already done the electric skins a while back and thought we were done, the AUFX integration needed a ton more art. For the last couple weeks this guy's been burning the midnight oil - working every night till 6 am after getting home from his day job. He's fallen asleep on his computer on multiple occasions just pushing really hard to get everything done, make everything shiny and awesome, and make sure people love it when they get their hands on it. So again I can't thank him enough for doing that, and hope I can make this worth it for him and do more with him in the future.

And I can't finish this thought without also calling out @sirhans for helping me cut the eventual electric guitar samples (turns out electric guitar samples are a lot harder to cut well than acoustic) and @Sebastian for a ton of awesome feedback on the general UI of the app which has also now gotten a facelift (credit to Ryan there too).

Rhism is a 1-person company but it's kinda staggering to realize what a massive team effort went into making this release happen. Hope you all like it! ... whenever Apple releases it :)

  • @mmp Hopefully it's low enough for your iTunes balance :) All the guitars & effects are included in a single IAP, so that should help :)

I have to say that I'm really lucky and grateful to be able to put input into this project, because it works and sounds so great, and I use it all the time--it's my main instrument! I want so much for it to work well, and now that it is being released, I'm very excited, because I believe all of you will be excited too! :-) @Rhism is an awesome developer and has put his heart into this, and deserves (like so many of our fantastic developers do), to be rewarded for these Herculean efforts! The funny thing is, you'll be rewarding yourself more by buying this! :-)

  • Thanks for you explanation on the AB effects slot @Rhism. That makes sense.

Looking forward to this, particularly given the team that was involved!

  • edited January 2014

@Rhism I have no idea how or why I would choose to reorder the amp and effects, I just know it's the kind of thing I'd do and would depend on what I'm working on at the time. If you can make it so I can reorder them by dragging any amp/effect graphic to any position in the column, that would be awesome. :)

  • @PaulB Yep it'd be a drag-to-reorder thing. I definitely want to do this - it was one of the 3 things on my list that I couldn't get to for this release. Just want to see what other issues / requests come up before committing it to my schedule.
