  • A lot here have been talking about slides, so I was Just thinking about how a dobro sounds with open tunning, which would mean a different guitar synth for the resonator sound, but the slide might be reworked from a different POV in the GUI. Some thing like how the bar slides could be a hand slide left
to right or right to left on the strings instead of strumming and the first chord and second chord give the range and some strings would have to be muted in the minors. Just throwing out ideas.
here's 8ido's demo for a taste of that sound

While I'm out in left field, what do you think about a Chapman stick

I realize this is far outside where you are but I thought to plant a seed

I'm blown away by what you have done already which is already far beyond what i can accomplish with my poor playing around on the Ipad, just thought you might like this stuff as well.

  • @wyndham Never seen that chapman stick video before - awesome! Probably fits better in the iFretless line of apps than guitarism, maybe @sirhans should take a crack at that one :)

Did you mean to link to a demo of the dobro sound you were thinking of? I didn't see a link / video for that one.

  • Chapman sticks don't do fretless, iFretless doesn't do fretted. Not a good match IMO.

  • yea, these are instruments run under kontakt but the sound of the Dobro is what I was blown away by.

    http://8dio.com/instruments/

    listed as solo dobro

    Your work in outstanding
    Wyndham

  • @PaulB Right but its technically much easier for iFretless to add fretted mode than for guitarism to add a full-blown fretboard interface. Whether Hans wants to or not - that's a different story :)

@wyndham nice instruments. Though without a visual I guess I don't have a sense for how the sound is generated, what gestures are used, etc. In any case I think I have a sense for the options and constraints around a slide gesture... I may try to do something here or may leave it for lead guitarism which I should probably just make soon...

  • That 8dio dobro sounds wonderful!
They also have an accoustic strummer, but that doesn't sound half as good as Guitarism IMHO.

btw. there's also a video of the Solo Dobro on that site, it uses a keyboard interface. I'd love to see a good dobro app on iOS-the iFretless format is probably more appropriate, for the Solo Dobro at least, than Guitarism's, but both would probably be better than a keyboard I guess...

  • Guitarism v3.24 is now live. The effect sliders should now be a lot more responsive on iPhone. Also, AB2 state saving support!

  • Really cool @Rhism! :-)

  • I'm ready to save some states...none in the US though.

  • Is it possible to do pitch bend with this app?

I can't seem to figure out how:(

  • @DaveMagoo unfortunately no, not yet anyway. The app is mainly designed for strumming and arpeggiating so bends weren't a high priority. I have some ideas though..

  • Still holding out for palm mute! For me that would transform the app.

  • @Fitz Thanks! Yeah I'm hoping to add a couple of transformational techniques in there - tricky to get right but if they make it they'd be pretty powerful. Palm mute is one of them. I don't think any app has really done this yet. Pitch bend has been done by some other apps, though not like I'm planning to do it.

  • edited May 2014

I think a pitch bend like thumbjam would be cool either with the gyroscope or sliding up and down the strings makes the most sense to me. They were the first things I tried to see if guitarism had pitch bend anyhow.

  • @Rhism, just started to use Guitarism (actually just started to make music on ios). The big discovery was to use the flat of my index finger to strum instead of my thumb, must be something to do with area touching screen? I think the palm mute would allow extra subtlety so am really happy you're on with it. Thanks!

  • midi midi midi ; )
love guitarism and yes to pitchbends too

  • @kobamoto Guitarism does support MIDI Out via the Quadroplay IAP today. But yeah, MIDI In is the #2 request right now - right after custom chord creation.

Pitch bend is not as frequent a request but I'll probably add that before doing MIDI In, since it'd be an expected part of MIDI In. Palm muting is much trickier but also would add a lot of power.

@Fitz Funny that you say that - I find that strumming with my thumb works much better than my finger! I've discovered lots of interesting variations on the ways people play the app via this forum :)

  • sounds like we've got allot of good things to look forward too! : )

  • @Rhism, have you written these methods down? Suggestions of playing methods might be a good idea? Once I get past the 'it's not my guitar' I'd really like to try different things.

I strum with my middle finger like you might strum an autoharp.

  • @syrupcore, that sounds similar to my index finger, but will try your middle finger. I did go back and use the thumb but felt like there was less control over how many strings I played. Maybe that depends on how you hold it!

  • @fitz was actually going to mention that in my comment. I think if you're standing it might be easier with a thumb. I imagine the index/middle are about the same. My middle one is just a little looser.

  • I gave the base version of this app a closer look and am now impressed. Thinking about getting the Rockstar pack, which has all the guitars and effects, or at least an electric and the MIDI out or something.

Does anyone know how big the app gets with the Rockstar add-on? The base app is 62.9 MB, so I'm wondering what all that content pushes it to. Thanks!

  • @StormJH1 With everything downloaded and installed the app will be around 210megs.

  • @StormJH1 Note that all the extra guitars support "swipe to delete" and "download on demand". So you can delete the ones you don't want when space is low, and later on if you want to get them back just tap them to re-download (they'll show a little cloud icon instead of the lock icon). You can delete/re-download as often as you like.

  • Perfect, thanks @Rhism & @Ryan!

I didn't realize that. That's a mighty thoughtful feature right there.

  • @syrupcore I wouldn't have thought of it if I hadn't been hanging out here for the last so many months :) Now if only I could figure out how to tell users about it without Yet Another Annoying Popup Dialog Box.

It is an appreciated option to have! I understand why a lot of developers think that the more stuff they give you, the better it is. But even if you buy an IAP, it sure is nice to have the ability to clear up space by deleting stuff you don't intend to use.

Instead of a popup, maybe a simple trashcan button on the bottom, or an "Edit" button on top that brings up a checklist. That seems to be universal iOS language for "delete".
