For sure, it’s a steal at the current price too. With a little marketing this app could be right up there in the “required tools” box.
Ya i was expecting it to be closer to 13$ when i searched for it.
I need to dig in and figure out the midi export and see if i can export progressions to then load up in other apps, for now tho I’m having fun recording live into atom 2
Don’t know if I could get away with $13, but thanks both for your support. This is mainly just a big side project for me and I’m always glad to see it helping people out. It’s definitely one of those things that some people get a lot of use out of and others not so much.
@reasOne The MIDI export is currently only within the ID audio unit (for exporting quantized and identified chords), but now that you say it I can see it being useful to export pad sets as MIDI files.
Definitely is in the Required Tools box for me and keeps getting better and better!
@TonalityApp : looking at the voice leading made think that a neat feature (and it wouldn’t surprise me if this is in the app but I missed it) for the chord pads would be to be able to press some pads and have it tell you the scales they have in common. Now that the various melodic minor and harmonic minors are on my mind, I was realizing how useful it might be to be able to see what scales work for various combinations of chords.
@charalew Thanks! And thanks for all your feedback back when the strum bar was first added.
@espiegel123 If I’m interpreting you correctly, one way to do this would be to route the chord pad output into the chord/scale ID in scale mode, set it to lock, and then tap all the chord pads you want to analyze. Is that at all helpful?
That does it. I’d like to suggest a few options in the scale identification AU.
@espiegel123 I like these ideas! They shouldn’t be too difficult to implement either. Do you happen to have theoretical keys turned on in settings? Fb shouldn’t appear unless you do
Ah! Theoretical keys was on. I didn’t realize that is what it did.
If you do add the option to only show scales that are “unique”, it would be useful in that window you can pop up to see the names of the modes or some other way to get to the mode of interest to hear it (or be able to press a key and have it play the scale starting on that note).
@espiegel123 I still need to handle things like F#/Gb though. I’ve been trying to think of an elegant way to deal with enharmonic preferences for a while now. For the most part it can detect the appropriate one when given a reference key, but the general case (like the main results table) is weirder and I can see different people preferring different approaches. I guess one way would be to just set a preference for sharp or flat, but I can see that being annoying and people having to switch back and forth.
Would the current view you get after tapping a scale suffice? If you scroll down there’s a modes section
The view after tapping the scale suffices...sorry for not noticing if it’s there.
For enharmonics like F#/Gb, is there an elegant way to display “synonym” names so that tapping one displays as that synonym..and you can have a pref as to whether b or # is displayed by default?
If it is something you see as a good fit for tonality it would be cool!
I really like the idea above of tonality making suggestions for other chords or notes to use with the current project. I struggle to get out of a couple scales as i don’t really know where to take a track, so i ended just using the same ol scales and notes over and over again lol. While that can be good and fun sometimes it just gets boring for me! I think something like , a “Use this” suggestor for lack of better term, really fits into the feel of the app as it currently is and could be a great addition to its growth!
I got an idea....
I already think tonality is the best chord pad app on iOS. But it's occurred to me that the App already possesses a bunch of existing capabilities, that IMO if reorganized could make the app a lot more intuitive for assigning chords to pads.
I'll try to explain the idea without resorting to illustrations.... Create a new chord pad assignment mode that places the chord search/discovery tools on the same page as the chord pads.
Not much needs to be changed (relative to the existing design).
What I'm envisioning is a new mode icon next to the Pencil icon, that looks like a "magnifying glass", to symbolize "search".
This new chord search and pad assignment mode, would bring up virtually the same window as the current chord pad window, but with the following differences.
The chords pads are narrowed in width and moved to the left side of the screen. This creates room on the right side of the screen where the strum window is currently. If you adjust the width of the strum window with the current slider, you have an area about half the width of the entire screen that could be used to put the chord choosing tools.
The chord choosing tools don't take up that much room in the Chord selection area of the standalone app.
So.. In the AU chord pad split window, arrange the Chord selection tools vertically down the far right side of what was the strum window. But... Eliminate the little " - " symbol in front of both the note letters, and the 6th, 7th, 9th, etc... area too. But leave the " - " symbol there for the Maj, Min, Aug, etc...
By my count this gives you a max possibility of 30 chords to choose from using the modified Chord selection tools.
To me the following is the coolest part of this concept. Use up to three rows of what are now used as strumming icons, and used them instead as containers for auditing the chords that are generated using the selection tools.
Keep the ability to strum the selectable chords operational. It's just that the use for it is now changed.
The user can now use the Chord selection tools to generate a bunch of different chords. They can then simple strum down each row of the generated chords until they hear one they like. They can then tap a particular chord multiple times and hear it play. If they want to assign that chord to one of the chord pads, all they have to do is long press that chord until it becomes draggable. Then they drag and drop it onto the chord pad.
Leave all the existing tools in the blue strip at the bottom of the screen for making adjustments.
But what might be really cool for this Chord selection mode.. add another short blue strip under the triangle, pencil, and magnifying glass symbols for special chord search functions. It could work like this... Hold down one of the pads that has a chord already assigned to it. Then press a symbol that represents things like pivot chords, harmonics, and possibly even scales. This changes all the little Chord selection (strum) icons to represent those types of chords. The user can then select those types of chords and drag them to pads the same way.
After the Chord selection is completed and the pads assigned. The user taps on the play triangle symbol, and it reverts the screen back to the normal chord pad screen, and functions just the same as it does now.
Pretty cool side project! I think if you polled 10 AudioBus forum members, 9 would have no idea that you have such powerful chord pad features in this app. Mostly this is because the name of the app (and the starting point of development) points to a compositional tool, which it is! But it's so much more in terms of a performance tool, as well. Anyway, not a big deal when it's a side project, I suppose. Happy to evangelize whenever possible here on the forum.
All good! I like this – maybe tapping to switch one chord from # to b could also change the global preference in ambiguous cases, since if you're thinking about one chord in the context of a sharp key you probably want to see others similarly. I'll think about it more and maybe push something to the beta when I get a chance.
@reasOne @horsetrainer Your ideas are complementary and something I've been thinking about. I've never been quite happy with the chord selector, and placing it on the side (for dragging and dropping) has actually been on my list for a while. Never would have thought of the strum bar integration, but definitely some potential there. The easy auditioning would be particularly nice. As far as chord suggestions, I think the alter/extend tools when swiping on a pad are a step in this direction, and I'd love to add more options. I really like @horsetrainer's idea of a new edit mode with expanded suggestions and editing capabilities. Integrating scales more (to help with modulation and even melodies) would also be cool. A related thing I want to consider is contextual suggestions, based on the selected key and surrounding chords. Thank you guys for the ideas! Again I've been pretty busy lately, but you're making me want to drop everything and try to implement some of this![:D :D](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/lol.png)
@lukesleepwalker Yeah, that definitely makes sense. I haven't focused too much on changing perceptions, but that's potentially something I should put a bit of time toward. Thanks again for your support! At least this way I get people like @reasOne who are pleasantly surprised to discover all the options
@TonalityApp
I've got a small 'feature request' that would make identifying on pads a bit easier.
Currently there is no easy way to identify which pads have chords with inversions or added bass notes.
ChordBud does this quite nicely for 'Inversions'.

This would be a very use-full addition and would also make it easier to select which chords match a chord progression.
My music theory is very lacking but I'm slowly learning and Tonality is a very good tool for this!
Another awesome addition would be to add a function that creates chords with classic chord progressions with various chord voicing! (This would make it easy to create pads for easy playing of backing tracks etc.).
The 'Chord Mode' on my LaunchpadPro 3 is a very nice tool and very inspiring to 'play'.

Just select a root note and scale and the chord mode makes it a breeze to come up with stuff!

Tonality is an app that deserve more attention for sure!
Don't know if @Gavinski has checked this app yet?
Yes su, but I have only used it in a very very limited way so far. All respect to the dev for sure tho
@Samu That’s a very good idea! You can currently achieve something similar by renaming pads, but I agree it would be a lot more convenient to have that automatically.
Very surprised by this app, it’s become an essential in less than 3 days 😎
Looking forward to anything you do to keep building on it but as it stands now I’m very happy with it and can accomplish a lot. I think whatever it can do it help people find other options for notes and chords to add to the pads will be amazing if it gets added. But I’mmaking some of the best riffs of my iOS life with this app right now
Happily been using Tonality for a while. Inspiring and educational!
[The Issue below is resolved now with just a bit of back and forth communication with this great and attentive developer]
But I have a problem now.
Loading it into Drambo, it was not working for a while, but I didn’t give it much attention. Went back to figure out what I was doing wrong. Loaded it into AUM, and same thing.
Removed the plugin from the Drambo project, closed Drambo, added Tonality again, and it does the same thing. No output.
Here’s what’s wrong. Pressing any of the pads doesn’t do anything. The pads don’t light up, and a midi monitor shows no output. Deleted the app, reinstalled, it worked in Drambo! Pads flashing, midi output. Opened it in AUM, didn’t work
Have the feeling I’m missing something, perhaps a setting?
What iOS and device type are you using? I’ve had this issue reported just once before, and we couldn’t figure anything out other than potential system issues. Do you get the same behavior in standalone?
@TonalityApp ios 14.4.1 iPad mini 5th gen. Standalone same result, the pads don’t flash or output sound.
@Frank303 Okay thanks, maybe not a systemic issue then. I made a build which should give me an idea of what's happening – would you mind switching to the beta?
Yes I’ll send you my email.
Map the pads to the Drambo or AUM keyboard or your midi controller!
@TonalityApp I bought this app when it first came out, because I love a good chord finder. When people started asking for MIDI this and AU that, I thought “don’t do it, you’re gonna break the app”. But I got to admit it has been an absolute joy watching your app grow from a pretty decent chord recognizer to a full fledged midi/au chorder with lots of other bells and whistles. And you’re not even done yet!
All this to say: great job! If this is just a “side project” I would love to see your main projects...
@TonalityApp I made an account here just so I could tell you how much I love the app.
The midi ID, PADS, STAFF in AUM are awesome. Thank you for developing this.
Welcome to the forum @asturoidu 👋
@TonalityApp - question: how can I set up some pads for chords and some for strumming? - like in the video posted previous page here by @reasOne i believe.
Every AUM session I’ve started since getting this app has began with Tonality and Atom 2
