Hold on. It's not dead. Just a bug in our code. We have submitted a fix for review already. Thanks to the lead developer, Duc Anh, for some quick work. Hopefully it will be back online tomorrow.

    Woohoo! Excellent.

Here’s the thing. Having an app that plays YouTube videos is not copyright infringement, nor illegal in any way shape or form. There are apps in the App Store that let you play YT videos in the background without a subscription. The problem is intent. Apple, YouTube, Spotify, they all want to make it nearly impossible to record from their apps so they code it accordingly. I don’t believe Apple actually cares if you can play YouTube as an AU. The legal issue would fall on YOU the user. If Apple decided they wanted to make it harder, they could, but not on legal grounds. Only by their own rules. Otherwise why would B—-e! have lasted this long? It’s not because we’ve been so good at keeping it a secret. :D

Right on! I love this Tube AU app because I watch tutorials "in app" with AUM/AB3 to learn how to do things. Valuable! I have no idea what this "sampling" nonsense is all about.

That's my official line too ;)

  • whether it is a demo or tutorial, (once it starts working again) can anyone be in agreement not to post anything in YT, Twitter, IG, FB, etc., about Tube AU sampling from YT. i am sure all of us really want this app to remain working and available in the app store for a very long time.

  • @Blue_Mangoo The periodic changes with YT break Be@t Time too, causing the need for an update. No bigs as long as you are willing to make updates accordingly.

  • This app seems useful if you're away from the studio and bravo for making it!
I always just plug my MacBook into my audio interface being powered by my iPad to recording streaming things I find that to be pretty easy and accessible, but I don't really sample to flip a sample to a beat anymore, I made hip-hop beats for years and got burnt out on finding samples to flip, I prefer to make my own sounds these days... It's actually faster than digging for hours to find something someone else made to make a new song... But I do like to sample speeches or other random sounds I can convert into percussion or white noise etc so I'll get this app to support the dev mostly cuz they got some cool shit out there

Agree with you on beats AND on vox. Folks seem to struggle in that area and there's so much (of course) out there, especially in the odd and random field. It offers the perfect modern answer/equivalent to cut-up etc.

You know, changing the app description to something like “Watch videos from inside your AUv3 compatible DAW” or the like might not be a terrible idea...?

    +1

  • Or market it as a practice tool for IOS musicians. That’s how I will be using it when it starts working again. I love loading a youtube video of a song and playing along with it and working out chords , progressions or drum rhythms while the video is playing.

lmao I was thinking the same thing. if it starts working again, let’s all collectively pretend like it doesn’t exist so it can fly under the radar

  • Play along some nice backing tracks and of course for practice purposes.
Dialing in a nice tone and play along with the guitar.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • If this app is a full WebAU I think it would stand less chance of being dropped by Youtube.
This code change shows how easy it is for them to block it.

I could see it from their perspective, it's using (part of ) their name and content and they are getting zero money from the app, other than viewing. But a web AU would more likely go under the radar. You could have a list of supported sites and then anything other than that would be experimental.

I'd also be much more interested in using it with other internet sources. ;)

Totally agree. ‘Tube AU’ feels kinda doomed to be broken often, or permanently at some point... the Web AU angle would make more sense for multiple reasons like you mention..

yeah and if they changed the code at least you could still use the app with other sites, they couldn't block the app completely.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • The App is not working anymore. No AUM, no Garage Band.

    +1.

Also the comments about keeping it quiet so YT don't notice made me chuckle.

Heh, yep, well at least it might make them more willing to ignore it for the time being :)
Also there’s loads of things which can be legitimately sampled out there in web land which is cool, not just YT.
Lots of audio + midi web sites coming out.

That’s another thing, we need web midi in AUM/AB3

    How about webmidi ? @Blue_Mangoo :)

  • @Blue_Mangoo I've been beta testing this recently https://cables.gl/
Which generates live visuals and audio + midi in the browser. Next gen type of working.

If we can have this type of environment as an AU on ipad that would be really interesting. :)

It allows MIDI to be sent from a website to a locally connected MIDI device.... for example Novation Components uses it...you go to the components website, connect your circuit to your laptop, and then from the website send sysex to the circuit. Apple does not currently support webMIDI in Safari.

Perhaps when iPad OS comes out (or in an update at some point) the new desktop Safari will support it..?

There’s a lot of sites which can use this, such as the cables.gl
Lots of hardware gear have webmidi apps instead of installers, easier to update etc. Tweak patches from online webmidi apps etc.
Boppad has a webmidi configuration utility. Currently you have to use a desktop browser.

So ability to use webmidi in an AU is going to get more uses, there are online sequencers etc :)

Hey, #8 in US AppStore music category! Congrats for that @Blue_Mangoo

I don't really need this app, but here's to hoping for all the best to you ... and for us, many more creative and indispensable iOS plugins from you and your team.

I'm not sure how much the Novation stuff relies on the windows/Mac drivers for the devices or if it uses all standard MIDI with no handshaking .. it uses a bootloader driver for the circuit to be able to communicate.
Personally this would be the only real use I would have for it, but as @Carnbot says, there are other WebMIDI enabled sites around.
