@moodscaper Rob, any thought to being able to output the different instruments to separate outputs so we could export stems to do further processing on the individual audio streams?
Quick question before I buy this app? How easy is it to pick up and make good stuff with or How easy to learn? It looks complicated and I’m usually good at picking up how to use apps, but I’m concerned From some pics and vids it’s complicated. Will it take a decent amount of time to learn how to use Touchscaper?
If you can dodge a wrench you can use Touchscaper at it most wonderful but patternless basics. In this no pattern mode you can trigger chords yourself or have the conductor auto play through them based on how many bars and repeats.
And while doing so you can engage the orbit of each keypress or slide your fingers around for any parameter change you link it to (external synths. Internal synths have pre mapped expressiveness)
Wow
I can throw a wrench just purchased thanks
It is easy to jump in and make great stuff without knowing anything.
A quick read of the manual will get you up to speed on the deep features.
It’s all really logical once you get into it.
Yes, that's something I'd like to do for sure. It's quite a lot of work as there's some pretty complicated stuff going on under the hood... for example, the "main instrument" as we now all hopefully know it, is actually 16 separate samplers going through about 8 different processing units (delays, reverbs, mixers and so on). So it's a case of "breaking" out some of those connections. All doable, but quite a task and as per, juggling priorities is always a bit of a challenge. I hope to get to it at some point though because I see it could be handy.
I bought this last night and had a play, lots of fun. It’s not so clear to me how many synths there are. The vertical and horizontal ribbons are independent synths, their patches are set from advanced settings. The chord synth is a third synth, it’s patch is set from the top right folder icon (why do these patches have two names?) then there’s the “touch” and “synth” sequenced voices. Is this right? What then is is main a and b?
The different A and B designation for main synth, the fact that ribbon has only one mixer fader for 2 (?) synths, the double name for main synth patches are all confusing me... can someone please clarify? Thanks!
Edit - also how do I save? Using the light bulb icon? I lost my project through user error clicking new project while looking for a save button
@drewinnit
There are actually 2 instruments layered together, with independent settings.
You can check it out by going to the main instrument list and hitting edit or new.
About saving:
If you look at the chord strip along the left edge, the last selection is “...” which opens a window that allows you to save your scene.
If you have set up stuff in the sequencer and/or arranger, then use the save buttons in each of those windows, and then save your scene.
so you actually save 2 things for one session?
or am in reading that wrong.
i do not have this .... yet 😎 but i’ve been following the progress here and onyoutube
Thanks @CracklePot
So I need to save each element individually? There’s no way to save and recall all elements at once?
So the chord synth is the same as main a and b? And it’s a patch made from 2 voices?
I’m sure I’ll get a good grasp of it after some more experimenting, it’s all a bit confusing at the moment![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
Yeah, to be sure, save in each window dialog.
I think an update may come that saves everything by just saving your scene.
I think the main pad, the right side strip, and the 2 regular keyboards on the bottom all use the main instrument. The Touch track of the Sequencer as well.
When you switch the bottom keyboard to the Ribbon type, it uses the Ribbon instrument. You set this instrument up in the Settings panel (gear icon, top left corner).
This is a separate 2 layer instrument, with the same editing available as in the main instrument.
In the Sequencer, there are also Drum, Perc, and Synth tracks. These each have there own instruments that you pick from the top mid/right area of the sequencer. The choices update when you pick the track type in the top left area.
I save 3 things, actually.
I think it is this way because of how new features got added to the app.
First there was just your Scene, the overall project save.
It saved your instrument and chord setups.
Then an arranger came. It has a separate save button.
Then a Sequencer got added. It has a separate save button.
Honestly, I haven’t done any testing about what saves and what doesn’t.
I just saw others were losing work when they just saved their Scene, and I noticed the other save buttons and used them. I haven’t lost anything, yet.
Thanks @CracklePot , I appreciate the tips![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Can be cool if you wanted to use a particular sequence from one project into another, it sounds like a possible mess of saves to keep track of tho , but maybe not I don’t have my iPad on me to buy it hehe but in apps like eg pulse the multisave thing is really strange
Thanks for the tips man!
Hey Guys, and thanks so much @CracklePot for helping out here - so yeah, basically what @CracklePot said, and I've said it before, and say it again - "state saving" is a total mess and needs a big cleanup - it's on the list. Thanks guys. New video up by the way just now. It's a bit of an... um... experiment. You'll see what I mean if you watch it.![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smiley.png)
link?
Yeah I'm finding the MPE mode works as expected
but if I select an individual channel in the destination list in Touchscaper it's not restricting the midi to that channel. For example I have selected channel 14 for main instrument A and in AUM then the midi is coming through 3 channels 6,7,8 for me.
It's not a big problem though as you can use the MPE mode and the virtual ports to connect to individual apps. But it seems like this channel selection should be restricting the midi to certain channels, unless that's not what it's supposed to do.
To the app or video?
Ableton? Yes.

this thing is way more fun than it looks 😍
what a great instrument and great developer, it’s awesome to see responses and new content being added daily both in the app and on youtube. support this app and this developer if you’re on the fence, it’s worth it!
Really nice, @moodscaper
Ready for more videos 😊
Thanks for your hard work.
Thanks @Carnbot - I'll do some more investigation around this. Sometimes I think MIDI routing just does whatever it wants to do sometimes...
And thanks for all the support folks! Much obliged.
sending the ribbon to steppolyarp unit 😎
maybe a better demonstration on how ribbon can really be expressive via midi - spa - tal u no
i’m getting really good results now with the ribbon and side bar... i think i just created a great sound scape performance, ill try to capture that audio and post it once it’s worthy
Hey @reasOne - very cool and I would never have thought of using the ribbon in that way. I tend to overuse it in "Rick Wakeman on speed" mode
First one has a kinda Boards of Canada vibe and also the latest Caribou with the pitch bend going on. Great stuff!
Glad you took the plunge.
You are in for a fun time.
🤙🏻
i was thinking how it would be great to play an arp along with a pad on the same screen and the idea popped in my head to just run the ribbon to SPA and success! i’ve been trying a bunch of instrument combinations and getting great results.
it could be cool if you could latch the ribbon while you’re away from the app messing about in aum or going to spa to change the pattern.
but man just playing 3 instruments on one screen is really a dream come true and a sound scrapers paradise!
so far i’ve lost 3 hours of sleep by just continuing to jam on this and not sleep 🤣
So... how’s it going? Touchscaper still intimidating, or are you having fun yet?
controlling two steppolyarp sequences with the ribbon. cuz two is better than one
