  • Haha, yeah I was about to say I saw it on the pic. Thanks

  • Hi and congrats for this great app . I have some problems with midi connections with other apps if i use thor or animmog and play some notes via xynthesizr the synth and fx feature don't work for the samples from animmog or thor ... All the others works perfect (seq , velocity ) .i have ipad 2 ios 7

  • It only sends note information through MIDI, not synth parameters.

  • Ok @Zymos thanks you for the info ...

  • Thanks @Iraklis and @Zymos!
@Zymos is right, the synth and fx sliders control only the internal synth engine.

  • Thanks and congrats once again @YuriT .you know if it possible for next update ?

@Iraklis, while I understand that it might be cool to use internal synth controls as CC controls, the issue is not as plain and simple as it may seem.

    1. Each synth has its own set of features and, therefore, controls. To me it seems a bit weird to use control layout designed for a particular synth to control other synths. On the other hand, I guess it's not uncommon in the hardware world for synths to ouput their knobs/sliders CC to preset CC numbers.

    2. It can't just automatically work. A very small number of usual synth controls are part of the MIDI spec (IIRC, amp attack and amp release, and a couple of others). Moreover, not all (hardware) synths conform to even the specified part (some of them prefer to use their own CC numbers). In iOS world, synths usually don't even have a default CC mapping. So the process of mapping Xynthesizr controls to synth's would require you to switch back and forth between the apps for each control when using MIDI Learn feature.

    3. All that means than you can map anything to anything, which can lead to confusion, because the slider color and caption won't always correspond to what you're actually controlling. On the other hand, if user messes with these things, he kind of has to know what he's doing.

    4. Imagine this when driving multiple synths. My guess is this can easily become a total mess, especially with hardware that has fixed CC numbers.

All being said, I'm not ditching the idea completely, these are the points that make me hesitant to try to implement it.

Would like to see your opinions.

  • No idea how it would fit into/with the current interface, but one or more CC tracks would be an awesome feature.

  • No problem with CC tracks (same way as velocity is now). This was about the internal synth controls doubling as external CC controls.

  • Oh.
How about sequencing some of the internal synths parameters other than velocity?

  • @Zymos, I'm intending to make those CC per step tracks assignable to some parameters when using internal synth. Not promising anything though :)

  • Cool. It's already a great app, but could become even greater!

  • Using the synth controls as MIDI controllers sounds like a bit of a mess and kind of out of scope for this app.

CC lanes though... Yes please. :) Then allow the internal synth itself to be controlled via CCs and make the internal synth a midi port (instead of dedicated internal synth control lanes). If it was a port, that also seems like it would be on the path to allowing us to point some lanes at the internal synth and some to external apps/devices.

  • Hi @YuriT, I've been using xynth within my looping setup with samplr and turnado. It syncs up beautifully and all af these apps, including loopy, have a seemless integration, start stop/continuous sync, no problem. If you were at all thinking of any upgrade though I'd suggest midi learn for the synth parameters. This would allow to have xynth running in the mix in a live situation without swiping back and forth. I don't know how hard would it be to implement this but I'd be willing to make a video of all of it working together as a way to say thank you and to help spreading the word ;).

  • Thinking again I'll probably make a video anyway as it sounds freaking insane! lol

  • Hey @YuriT how are you? I just had this brilliant idea for xynthesizer. How about midi key notes in the seq section being assignable to keys on a keyboard for live use. Midi learn would be ideal. This would make xynth most immediate for quick key switching when performing. Would that be hard to implement? You could bring midi in as an IAP.

Yuri: It may well be a good idea, but tell him 'not until you make us the video you promised....' :)

  • Ha :) the promised video @JonnyGoodyear requires midi in to make key changes on the fly :P

  • I'm definitely patient enough to wait for that...still hope to see it.

  • So do I! ;-)

    Haha :)

    @supadom, hey, thanks!

I've also had that idea when thinking about what can be done with MIDI input in Xynthesizr context.

As you might have seen, version 1.3 is now in the App Store, which includes Audiobus 2 (with state saving) and IAA support, as well as some iOS 8 fixes. So that's what I've been doing lately with Xynthesizr. And there's still need to optimise it for iPhone 6 and 6+.

Returning to MIDI input, this is one of the features that I'm myself very much looking forward to implement. It's just a matter of time that I can spend on what essentially still is a hobby project.

  • I know man. I can imagine how much time Apple has robbed us off with IOS8 with all the developers working to optimize they apps instead of new features. No pressure!

  • @supadom This is a good point, many muso-hours lost...

  • MIDI In would be awesome. A usage video from Dom would be awesome. Pattern Save slots would be awesome. A usage video from Dom showing MIDI triggerable Pattern Save slots would be the awesomenessest.

@YuriT I just found Xynthesizr, awesome app! Looks like the perfect tool for sketching out ideas on the go. A couple of features came to mind as I was playing around with it:

    • MIDI recording. It would be awesome if the app could also record the performance as MIDI, not just audio. That way I could use it on the go to create some longer sequences, then email a MIDI file for further tweaking in my DAW at home. This would be a very very useful feature. If I understand correctly, right now the only way to get sequences into your DAW is via live MIDI output.

    • Synth parameter CC out. It looks like this may have been discussed. While I hear the arguments against it, I do think it would be useful to have the option to send CCs from the internal synth controls. This way I could map these to synths in ny DAW and be able to both program sequences and control parameters right from Xynthesizr. Would certainly be a lot less clunky than having to switch to another controller app, or using a separate hardware controller. Of course, CC lanes that were suggested could be good too, but I imagine those would be limited to the sequence step length.

Thanks again for this awesome app, look forward to how it develops in the future!

  • Here's another suggestion - swing. Because it makes everything a bit funkier. :)
