Is there any way to use the new Swam standalone iOS models with MIDI Guitar2?

That would be really awesome! I ask because I did manage to use MG2 through AudioBus3 to trigger ThumbJam, but it was really cludgy and only worked with a minimum of functionality.

But for guitarists, it would be a way to finally access acoustic modelling on iOS, which for me would be like a dream come true - like using your own instrument as a Synthaxe without the inherent disadvantages (cost, portability and size and weight, lack of availability).

One other question, would it be possible to connect an external midi breath controller to an iPad Pro and have it control the SWAM models? I know it’s possible on Wndows and Mac, but I have never heard any mention of this in connection with the iOS platform.

Both should be possible, though whether the results would be less than excruciating is another matter. We'll find out when they're released in (check watch) March 2020…

Thank you Masanga - except it's now July, so I suppose you mean March 2021?

Dude - ANY name with poo in it is immediately better. But that's beside the point - I wasn't the one wishing for a better name ;)

  • @Daveypoo, you mean Poo was your Christian name?

'Beloved' is my Christian name. Poo is what I named myself. Awwwwwww yeeeeeeeah.

  • @Daveypoo well, at least we settled that!

Mikeypoo just doesn't have the same ring to it, unfortunately.

  • Unfortunately.

At this rate I might – it was a weak joke about when they were originally promised to drop…

  • @moForte any development news?

  • My father just bought a Roland aerophone (like an EWI but Key layout is same as saxophone, or so he explained to me) and I was hoping he could trigger the SWAM woodwinds through roli noise, but it is not possible, so I’m looking forward to this so I can get him hooked up with those. It was fun trying to figure out midi stuff with my dad though, he’s a classical musician (clarinet, flute, sax) so not really something we’ve done before.

Very cool! Yes the SWAM soundpacks in Noise only work with ROLI hardware, but he can still play the non-SWAM sounds, including the legendary Mellow Duduk. You need to run it as AUv3 rather than standalone to use third-party controllers.

I'm good, thanks. Social-distancing and all - don't want to get my hands dirty. 😉

Ah. I have a lightpad block but that doesn’t help what he needs. I did have him hooked up to logic and using miroslav as well as logic samples. He’s using it to play in his church, so he’s mostly looking for realistic sounds. I couldn’t get him into crazy bass sounds and such (I tried!).

No, I suspected that it may have been irony, but since keyboard errors are not uncommon I just wanted to check ;)

The Lightpad gives you access to ROLI Studio Player, which has some truly gorgeous acoustic wind patches you can use with the Aerophone: Alto Chalumeau Reed, Breath Flute, Mellow Duduk (actually an entirely synthesised patch with no sampled layer, but very authentically expressive), plus the two in the Colours of India pack that I think is still free on desktop though not in Noise. In Studio Player you can find them all by filtering on Acoustic and Wind; I can't now remember whether all of these come with the free sound libraries, but there are MPE and non-MPE versions of all the main ones. For extra expressiveness use MidiFire or similar to map CC74 to CC1 (not necessary in Noise as it does this for you).

On iOS, you also might try to tempt him with the Embertone instruments (Sensual Sax is great with the SEX control mapped to CC1, though a real sax player might be less impressed), iFretless Sax, or some of Michael Eskin's folk instruments in ThumbJam. You don't need MPE for all of these to sound pretty great, at least by the (possibly low-bar) standards of us non-wind players…

Yes, I use studio player, as well as the full equator and strobe 2 (as of the other day) with my light pad. There are great sounds in it. This was specifically for my dad, who doesn’t have any of that, I was just trying it out to see what he could trigger from noise, and he is specifically looking for realistic sounds to use in church. He’s playing the aerophone to minimize playing a wind instrument in proximity to others. It has built in sounds that are ok but like the rest of us, as soon as you get your first electronic instrument you’re already wondering about how to get it to sound better! He’s been a clarinetist for over 60 years now (he is 72).

I didn’t think about ThumbJam, I’ll have to try that next time I go to his house.

Just as a footnote to my previous, I checked and Breath Flute and Mellow Duduk come with the free sounds in Noise (but you'd probably need to gift him AUM to host it), and Alto Chalumeau Reed (the excellent real-clarinet one) is in the Elementals IAP but I think is free in Studio Player, so he could audition it in that to see if it did anything for him.

It also occurs to me that Seaboard 5D, though pretty much abandonware, does work in standalone with an external controller on devices right back to iOS 9, and includes Breath Flute and Mellow Duduk among its selection of now rather vintage Equator patches, so might give him some instant gratification. The downside to Seaboard is that it doesn't automatically map CC1 to CC74 brightness as ROLI's patches, so without the MidiFire kludge it's not quite as expressive with a non-ROLI controller.

Understood, thanks for those thoughts. I would only get him noise if the SWAM instruments were able to be triggered by the aerophone, but that’s not the case. I love the roli sounds and do use them myself with my lightpad.

Geoshred and SWAM would be the thing he would be looking for if it happens and if geoshred will allow external midi to trigger those sounds, or if not, then if SWAM ever released standalone apps he’d probably want that. Or he can just use the sounds in the aerophone. Since he has been playing for so long, he’s more sensitive to what sounds and feels real in terms of woodwind sounds than I am.

    But I appreciate the input.

  • Now that I think of it, I gave him a real duduk for his birthday a few years ago. Not an easy instrument to play! He did get it eventually though- the reed REALLY has to soak for it to get a good sound.

    .

  • How hard can it fucking be to uncheck the box that says "hurrr durrr only respond to Roli hardware durrrrrrrr"

    Fucking beyond insulting.

September release date my ass. How could they ever have thought this brass ios app would have released in november of last year?!?! Literally what the fuck. Now they're apparently gonna release not only the brass apps but woodwinds and strings too within 30 days? I'll chop off and eat my girlfriend's dick if that happens.

Gonna be til at least 2025 til we see a release. And even then it will probably be hidden deep within the presets of some obscure synth that no one uses, that only works on older iOS models, that only recognize the keyboard of the Yamaha cs80, and it's a pay per 30 seconds of use subscription model. And you have to have a wifi capable dildo inserted into your ass connected to the SWAM cloud

  • still waiting for my swam violin played on their velocified geoshred. Is this just a myth ? I can live with velocity kb playing thumbjam , but please up the game !

From Audio Modeling's rough roadmap post updated August 8th, 2020:

October 2020: Release of SWAM Solo Brass for iOS
December 2020: SWAM Solo Strings and Solo Woodwinds v3 for Desktop and iPad

Doesn't mention any dates for the SWAM packs in GeoShred though 🤔

  • Don't think I heard back when I asked before. Anyone on the beta for this?

  • My testflight for it is over, but I was not very active the past couple of months, so its possible they continued without me.

  • I actually emailed Pat from MoForte directly about some issues. Seemed test flight was not sending them the emails I was sending through that. A new beta is coming out soon. Maybe contace them again and ask to get on it again?

  • Oh sorry. I never tested for geoshred, just SWAM stand alone.
