Incredible display of nastiness. What's wrong with people? https://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/nurses-coronavirus-nhs-spitting-rcn-covid-19-a9414416.html
Perhaps they’ve gone over the deep end into panic, scared the nurses are already infected, and are angry that they’re in their community? Hopefully this story will educate the public about why these nurses still need to care for patients in the community rather than in the hospitals.
not vent but a weird side effect from countries shutting down, massive drops in pollution being detected from satellites 🛰
The President of the United States is a fucking clown. How can anyone take this buffoon seriously?
I don’t see how anybody can see that and not be repulsed. Honestly, asking “What can you say to people who are afraid?” is such a softball question to any leader.
I suppose i’d this were Shakespeare, we’d feel some sympathy for the man who is so completely incapable of leading, and every utterance he makes causes ever more damage.
Hospital staff are already running out of PPE in the U.S.. The infection rate is just starting to climb
here and already it looks like medical professionals are likely to be infected because they don’t have enough PPE.
I love this President. He handled it fine.
It is horrifying. I honestly don't understand how the 42% of the US that approve don't see what an unempathetic, corrupt and incompetent man he is.
Honestly? I think you’re just being contrary. Here is that noted liberal wing nut Dan Rather on the same press conference:
A large portion of the population is on lockdown. More should be and all should have done it earlier. So, please don’t give the impression that none of the country is. States and counties have had to act in the face of incompetent national leadership.
People who want a strong leader see his behavior as commanding. They also view all reports
that confront their leader as being rude. They would accept state approved press coverage because they are aligned with the leaders agenda. It's usually based on a "trying to save the country that's going to hell" so all behavior is acceptable. In fact it just shows that the people that we're the problem have been negated and just need to fall in line.
Take the time to listen to a Trump supported and they will slowly justify his approach as helping fix the country and provide essential security when they think we are loosing ground to China and over burdening the country with excess immigrant: legal and illegal.
I do think it's a minority view but it's still worth understanding to chip away at the margins that really don't like someone that thinks it's OK to "flip-flop" with the wind and pretend your not just lying for personal gain. Most people would prefer someone to at least fake sincerity convincingly and not just gaslight reporters with bullshit and then attack when cornered with facts.
Trump attacks the media relentlessly to make truth irrelevant. Power is needed to save the country and stay the course. Lot's of historical examples and it just works if enough people are scared. The virus will create opportunities to stoke the furnace of fear and create "others" that are the danger to be controlled and held back from power.
People with real power will engage this time and not just roll the dice for changes that might be good for business. This is NOT good for business. This is only good for Trump and Putin...
and maybe the Saudis.
Maybe @robertreynolds will explain his views... but he's probably learned not to engage but just enjoy "winning" for a change and watching us squirm helplessly without an effective leader to run against the "chosen one".
I can’t believe I’m saying this but, people using the Peter Alexander put down as evidence that “Trump is heartless” is just a political game. If you watch the whole interaction you see there was a build up of back and forth, interrupting each other, building tension, and then Peter’s final question was taken as provocation, not an honest question. I’m not saying Trump did the right thing. For the love, he’s the President. NOTHING should provoke him to respond like that... but this particular press interview is not as shocking when you watch the whole thing.
At any rate, there are heaps of other statements and video clips more clearly showing Trumps poor form if thats what we need to vent about.
He's just going back to not doing press Q and A. He's not up to the challenge of fencing
with reporters. That was a softball question "What do you say to Americans that are scared?"
It was the 3rd or 4th oppositional question and Trump played the bully card. Not a good look
in an election year but it does play to his base. He's over his head to give confidence to independents and the business risk managers. Clueless in DC.
@McD I know folks here won’t believe me, but I’m not trying to win, nor watch anyone squirm. I believe we’re all ultimately unified by our humanity. I also think alternative viewpoints should be encouraged, especially when they are kept respectful.
If you are talking about the US, you can’t use the number of tests as an indicator of the actual cases as the amount of testing has changed quite a bit in the last week.
Currently, working backwards from deaths is the only way to get a reasonable sense of where things stand. See the medium article I have posted a few times to get a better understanding of interpreting the metrics.
Until a few days ago, there was so little testing ...even of people clearly symptomatic that the numbers are still meaningless. We don’t know the magnitude of the error. But the undercount last week was likely off by at least an order of magnitude in some parts of the country.
So, no one should be looking at comparisons of the positive tests in the US for a meaningful tracking of the viral spread. There are big league statisticians that keep on trying to explain that but journalists on the whole are semi-numerate at best.
The numbers will be bad and getting worse for a while. A lack of cotton swabs in Northern California (where I live) is apparently going to result in testing being rationed again rather being accelerated even though a lot more test kits are available. Apparently there is a worldwide shortage of cotton swabs...many of which are normally manufactured in Northern Italy.
California and New York’s hospitals are hitting capacity now. This is bad news as the lockdowns are recent. So the death rate is likely to be exponential here for at least 2 to 3 more weeks, possibly longer if either the social distancing hasn’t been effective or lack of health care capacity increases lethality.
I think you are right about that Max. Same for US and Germany. A lockdown today will affect the testing statistics in about 2 weeks... until then we’ll watch the numbers increase at the same rate.
Glad to hear Germany has locked it down. Not feeling good about what will happen here in the US.

For those that still don’t get it, one week ago there had been 49 deaths in the U.S. due to Coronavirus.
Today, the total is 256. More than. factor of 4. At this rate, the total will be about 1030 in a week and over 4,000 two weeks from now and over 16,000 three weeks from now and so one until we get this under control.
If you wonder why this is different from the flu, educate yourself.
In the U.K., there were 2 total deaths on March 6, 11 total deaths on March 13 and 177 on March 20. Not a great progression.
I feel the rhythm of life, breathe in, out, in, out, lock, unlock, lock, unlock.....
I'll engage in good faith: what's shocking about the incident is that it shows Trump has no plan. I did watch the whole exchange, and Trump is up there speculating that chloroquine might be used to treat the virus, but he says himself multiple times that he doesn't know if it will be effective. That is not the behaviour of a real leader with a plan, that is grasping at straws. He is totally out of his depth in this crisis, he doesn't know what to do. This is the main reason that the US is going to be facing a disaster in the coming months.
The UK government was somewhere between delusional and insane a week ago, but in the last seven days they have slowly started to face reality. They still have a long way to go, but you can see that at least the direction of travel is heading the right way. Trump is still out in La-La Land and shows no signs of facing reality.
But there is still no general lockdown in Germany.
And also the lockdowns are „mild“.
I see single cities doing more as the leaders.
It's very weird in the UK - lots of mixed messages as to how this will pan out.
One article on the BBC today suggests the death rate prediction is difficult to put into context, as it includes natural deaths as well. So it doesn’t take into account deaths in the vulnerable groups that might have happened anyway, from normal flu or the underlying health issues. It suggests if we take all the necessary measures deaths could be as low as 20,000, compared to 8,000 from normal flu.
But then gives figures for 250-500,000 if we don’t.
One minute I read something that terrifies me to my bones, the next, it’s not so bad.
