Tick, tock, lock, unlock, the body bags are already piling up, we just haven’t got there yet.
President Trump would be better served by deferIng to his medical advisors to answer medical questions rather than just winging it as shown in the video. His discussion demonstrates:
I think the less fodder there is out there for leaders being seen as incompetent or inappropriate, the less partisan negative media coverage there will be so we can all focus on how to move forward.
I think it’s good the video included an explanation by an ER doctor as to why masks can’t be sanitized for reuse. It would have been even better if one of Trump’s medical advisors had been asked to provide an update of the issue. There’s no reason any leader needs to become an expert on medicine during a pandemic. They should certainly ask questions about why we can’t sanitize masks, but I believe these conversations should be happening before the press conference rather than as some sort of fact checking dialogue between the president and a doctor being interviewed by the media.
Look forget about Trump he’s a symptom not the bloody cause, btw in Britain the Queen doesn’t address the nation at Easter.
The ongoing blame dance between the President, media outlets, and their partisans is a distraction at a time where I believe we need focus.
Trump is using the daily briefings not to inform or warn people, he's turned them to be about him, about how wonderful he and his response is. He no longer has his rallies so he's using these instead to be his platform about himself.
Some in the press are calling for the news networks to not show his briefings as they are full of lies and misinformation and propaganda and could cost lives. I wish all the news networks would simply just ignore his daily briefings, starve him of the attention he craves.
@knewspeak : I don’t mean to be obtuse, but in my opinion “lock, unlock, repeat” is very vague and subject to many interpretations. Maybe, you have meant all along something like what is described in the article. If that is the case, I don’t think “lock, unlock, repeat” captures what you are intending to convey.
The specifics are important. Some versions of that formula (as Pueyo mentions) are disastrous and some aren’t. At the time you posted, some were advocating the disastrous version of it (see the article for why some versions of lock, unlock, repeat are a bad idea) . Specifics matter.
To me, “lock, unlock, lock unlock”, sounds like one keeps gong back to the way things were before lockdown.
Maybe, you intend for us to understand that “unlock” is not back to how things were. If that is the case, I personally don’t think “lock, unlock, lock , unlock” captures that there are critical ongoing changes (until, there is effective treatment or a vaccine) that need to be in place. Maybe it is clear to others and I am being dense.
Do you agree that there are ongoing large scale changes that have to be going on the entire time for “unlock” to work?
In your opinion, ”unlock” isn’t back to how things were without important ongoing change is it?
The dance is not just “lock unlock, lock, unlock”. The dance involves ongoing changes in how we go about things and changes in policies and ramping up of specific procedures that keep transmission rates. I don’t recall your mentioning those. It sounded to me as if you were advocating just alternating between locked down and non-locked down phases without mentioning the critical ongoing changes that need to be in place.
At the time you posted, there were some (apparently including some in the British government) advocating a simplistic alternation between locked down and free phases without making the critical procedural and structural changes to keep transmission rates less than one.
If you did mention them, I missed them for which I apologize.
In any case, if you mean something more nuanced ..something along the lines of what is discussed in The Hammer and The Dance, I don’t think “lock, unlock, lock, unlock” captures it. I don’t mean to argumentative.
I think this is a case where details matter...particularly since some are advocating for a version of “lock,unlock,....” that seems like it will increase long-term risk.
Maybe, there is a less ambiguous way of describing what you mean?
It doesn’t get less ambiguous,
Lock, lockdown (Strict Stringent) people become infectious or not during this period, then after around 14 days are not infectious or they go to hospital.
This resets the virus to before the exponential growth spurt.
Unlock a return to near normality ( hand washing, etc still in force ) the virus will start to spread again but lockdown comes back into force before infections explode.
This gets repeated over and over, until we get a vaccine enough medication, equipment etc.
People aged 18-49 represent 53% of Coronavirus cases in New York City
NY Gov Andrew Cuomo is doing a good job. He's asked the Army Corp of Engineers and FEMA to build makeshift hospitals in NYC, anticipating that April and May will be worse. He says that Trump should enact the Defense Production Act to stop the price-gouging on medical supplies that's occurring right now. $7 being charged for 58-cent masks. And he predicted that 40-80% of New Yorkers will catch Coronavirus.
Who’s blaming who?
^ Trump tweeted and trashed Comcast, who owns NBC and MSNBC (Trump now calls it 'MSDNC'). They've laid off many employees over the past month.
In other news, Netflix has decided to reduce its streaming 'bit rate' to lighten the load. At least that's what the CEO said this morning on CNN.
Virus Name Blame
Taiwan Blaming WHO
What do you mean by "etc " Imehen you say "hand-washing , etc"?
Details matter?
What else?
The virus is going to be exploding in China again before you get it, people who will follow the regimen of hand washing, social distancing during unlock will, others won’t even under penalty of death. How many people must die because we fail to balance the two threats, the virus, economic destruction, tick, tick, people are dead now because of the lag of inaction.
Did you carefully read the article?
There is a lot more nuance and detail than what you seem to express, but maybe I misinterpret what you are saying . Details matter.
If the process outlined in the article is followed, there won't be another explosion in China when the "dance" starts ( it has started in China and South Korea if I understand what is happening there)
Call it Foxtrot and Charleston if you like, LOCK, UNLOCK, doesn’t get any less cryptic, does it.
@knewspeak : it does get more nuanced.
If you read the article you will see that there different versions of “lock, unlock, repeat” with very different outcomes and implications for the future. The author discusses them.
Since you say that it is as simple as “LOCK,UNLOCK” without requiring anything other than good hand-washing and social distancing, I disagree that the current evidence point to such a simple solution.
I think Pueyo outlines something that offers a letup in the near-term from long term lockdown, but it isn’t as simple as LOCK,UNLOCK. And it doesn’t involve explosions in the transmission rate as you suggest.
I could be wrong, but it sounds like you didn’t read the article.
Lock, unlock, works inline with the nature of human beings and also that of the virus.
Humans are programmed in the womb, reprogramming to such a severe degree is ludicrous,
Therefore unfortunately virus infection levels will rise again and lockdown will have to take place.
Then you’ll be back to Lock, Unlock.....
I think we need to step back a bit.
We are all in this together. Each person is desperately trying to make sense of what is unfolding. @knewspeak I'm not sure exactly where you are, but your ironic tone suggests to me you're not in a state under lockdown. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm in New York City, and it's fucking terrifying here. It feels like the wave is about to crash, and — well, I was going to say I'm not sure we're ready for it, but I know we're not ready for it. I'm not sure we are going to make it, to be frank.
Here's the rant part, if you prefer to skip it:
The appalling leadership of the president has made this crisis far worse. Recommending untested malaria drugs in a press conference! Three things have happened as a result of that: chloroquine poisonings are on the rise and lupus patients (who need the drug to live) are seeing shortages.
The third development seems to be great news for Rising Pharmaceuticals, a New Jersey company that just happened to raise the price of chlorquine by 90 percent between December 2019 and January 2020, only to grandly reduce the price of the pills (which have been available since the 1940s) to its original price of December after news reports of its price rise came out.
The DPA includes provisions for the production of pharmaceuticals, in addiitonal to medical equipment, masks, etc. Git 'er done now, not “just in case we need it."
Angela Merkel got a routine vaccination on Friday. Turns out the doctor has Coronavirus. Unbelievable.
We'll get through this.
Please please don't get your news from Facebook.
The New York Times has lowered its paywall for all coronavirus coverage (I believe any URL with the word "virus" in it is exempt?), and I'm fairly certain The Washington Post and The LA Times has done the same. The Wall Street Journal seems not to have, but I suspect that it's a matter of time.
It's an interesting one though, isn't it? And dear NYC always feels a little bit like a world unto itself, prison and paradise, and that feeling must be more so than ever right now
Contrary to all the advice our old coaches gave us, this thing's a sprint AND a marathon![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
@knewspeak : The impression that I have from what you are saying -- which strongly implies there are only two states of response to the virus locked down and not locked down -- is that you didn't read the article.
There are important things that have to happen besides hand-washing for things to work out well. Transmission can be shut down with a return to something like normalcy, but there is a lot more to it than handwashing and mild social-distancing.
In my opinion, there are good options that get us back to something like normalcy before terribly long. But there is a lot more to it than "lock, unlock" and hand-washng. It doesn't involve repeated explosions of viral outbreak.
It seems very simplistic to me to view the world in that sort of dichotomized way.
Read the article and let's see if we can have a serious discussion with details rather than a repetition of vague catch phrases.
Well, said, @JohnnyGoodyear
I've been kind of sticking to my running, although work and cooking for a family of five has made it clear that I'll have to accept a run every other day.
But I'm more of a cyclist, and I'm super-stubborn, and there is no hill or distance that can defeat me. But it REALLY helps to know when you're climbing a steep grade that there's an end to it somewhere. That's the hard thing about our current situation.
And the zombies are scary too.
@ExAsperis99, as a former fellow New Yorker I hear you. Stay strong.
If anyone still cares about Trump’s lies and the actual facts re the virus here is a good list....
https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/22/politics/fact-check-trump-coronavirus-false-claims-march/index.html
.....so, we know about this virus and we look out across the future sea and imagine its rise and then peak and slow fall with then the bodies to be counted and the stories to be told etc., but we always miss out (looking forward) on that we know not about. The weird thing that happened. The tragedy upon tragedy. The quirk or the blip.
When confronted with trying to imagine that which I haven't imagined (Biden dying, Texas seceding) I think horror movie scripts have a lot to offer. Therefore, my out-there guess for that we haven't figured yet is that Trump realizes if he doesn't take credit for an antidote or vaccine of some kind he has no chance of getting out from under all the mess he's made of things and thus we end up with a half-assed, under-researched 'solution' that, it turns out, causes XXX in millions of the population who raced to take it (looking back to literature XXX is often sterility, deafness, blindness etc etc).
I know, cheap 80s sci-fi/horror film at that![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
I disagree, because someone is in charge and there is blame to be made unless we are asking ourselves to not hold the president of the United States accountable...... for his repsonsibilities ..but why would we do that?.
"1He’s not aware of the issues surrounding mask usage.
Doesn’t know that in many places they’re reusing masks already at risk to themselves and patients.
You can’t sanitize the masks with liquids.
His advisors are not preparing him for these addresses or he’s not taking their advice.
Unaware of current CDC recommendations.
Seems out of touch with how the public will react to his off the cuff remarks.."
the issue with these points you made earlier Is that it's not trumps reality. He watches more news than anybody else, he's not like most other Fox News enthusiast in a suspended state of fantasy... he watches all of the news channels religiously... he does it more than he does his job, he is 300% completely aware of all of the reports on the mask and everything else... he is not out of touch!
he is a pathological liar... he is adverse to the truth and he doesn't like or care for anyone but himself , not even does he care for his own supporters whom he called dumb and uneducated
he's a bad person who likes to do bad things and is using the presidency to further his bad ambitions, no rocket science on this one.
Blame Game
I think the degree to which the public, elected officials, businesses, government employees, and members of the media are able to cooperate will play a central role in how the pandemic develops. Is the threat posed by each other greater than the threat by the virus?
