So GM (General Motors) was supposed to work with another company to make ventilators? But GM kept delaying it, saying it would cost too much?
Didn't the US taxpayers bail out GM for $70 billion a few years ago?
So Trump has just enacted the DPA (Defense Production Act) to force GM to make those ventilators. Good job State Governors.

I think those southerners who desired to expand the slave economy into the western territory must have shared a belief system that relegated people into categories of class, with slaves being at the bottom as lesser beings worthy of being owned as property.
Many of the complaints I read about Trump and todays republican party... Might all seem based on "the rejection" of a similar type of belief system.. One that relegates people into categories of "worthy" and "unworthy".
I see this as another manifestation of that part of the human mind that is guided by primitive animalistic instincts.
Instead of a higher intellectual capacity acting as a guiding force.. For raising up civilization and advancing prosperity by applying elevated truths.
The way an undisciplined mind may succumb to primal impulses absent any ethical concepts existing to oppose the primitive force..
Plenty still believe that the Civil War was not fought over slavery, but for states' individual rights versus a growing-out-of-control federal government that was trying to control everything. They'll say, Sure, slavery was part of the equation, but wasn't the primary reason. Farms in the South couldn't survive without slaves, and there were far fewer farms in the North, so they don't need slaves. Our livelihood is very different from yours. Stop encroaching on our lives.
That's what they taught in bible belt high school US History classes in the late 80s.

there is no scientific proof that racism has anything to do with biology, there is plenty of scientific proof that people are not born racist and are indoctrinated into that stupidity.

There has been some excellent scholarship documenting how the civil war and slavery have been covered in text books -- basically text books were heavily influenced by texts written to appease southerners and their view of the civil war. Most people know only what they were taught in school -- and when I went to school, one didn't actually read the articles of secession,
But I digress. One doesn't need historians to interpret events. You need to look no farther than the text of the articles of secession of each state and the statements by their leaders at the time to see that it was all about slaves. No interpretation required. They were very open about secession being about slavery. They didn't try to hide the fact. Why would they, they had convinced themselves that it was ok.
It should be mentioned that horrible racism wasn't restricted to people that approved of slavery. Even many opposed to slavery (probably even most) were shockingly racist. They did not accept Africans as being their equal, but thought that slavery was wrong.
It is a shameful part of American history and we've never fully dealt with it. The attitudes that allowed slavery to happen in the first place are very much alive in many places and influences our politics to this day.
Not good. Those that rely on government grants (and that is a lot them) have to kind of keep quiet. But quite a few are vocal about how Trump has bungled this and is making it worse.
Yup, when I worked at NIH the forbidden topic was stem cell research. Bush Jr. was in power, US doctors left in droves for other countries, giving up massive grants for their other research.
I truly don’t see how anybody can support this man. This is beyond belief. He’s basically saying that if governors are “appreciative” and thank him, then citizens in those states will get federal aid for ventilators.
I think you should enjoy tonight and then consider reading it tomorrow. I actually found it beautiful, somehow encouraging, and just a little bit sad.
Agree, an all counts. I am a tart for Lit, and Lord knows before we're dead there will be many memoirs of these days and this thing, but it was good to read some real writing...

I was in a zoom meeting yesterday here in Austin, Tx and after it was over, a few of us stuck around to chat a bit. There was a woman in real estate who said that the financial institutions are already instructing them to start preparing foreclosure paperwork. We’re not even 2 weeks into this and the banks are already circling like sharks with chum in the water... ready to start forcing people out of their homes and businesses.
