Not iOS, but Equator 2 dropped on Thursday at a 30%-off intro price (including on upgrades). If anyone was smart enough to follow up @cazel's tip to pick up ROLI Studio on the 70%-off sale last week, they can now upgrade off it and get a £200 synth for £80. Doug did a big demo yesterday of the non-MPE sounds while we wait for the @Gavinski festivities.

It's pretty incredible. Haven't tried it with iPad controllers, but it sounds absolutely sensational with my Artiphon & ROLI kit. Backwards-compatible with original Equator and all your NOISE soundpacks (automatically transferred), but three times the sound source slots and tons of new sampled instruments, wavetables, and new modulation options and fx I've barely scratched. I haven't even finished going through the factory presets (there are 500 new MPE ones alone, and they've done an FXpansion in also catering to the non-MPE crowd, who get 800 of the buggers).

for MPE users - camelot pro desktop version is also amazing! audio modeling also offers a full working free version with some limitations -10 plugins/no import-export -
as an Ableton user - before Live 11 with MPE news - camelot pro was a lifeguard (: and I still use it caus they offer a great midi mapping support + hardware manager with smart maps + best mpe sound configuration Ive experienced on macos.
and macos ios compatibility is def a bonus too
to be honest, I don't much like recommending softwares/plugins caus everyone has a different workflow/need but if u dont own or plan to buy Ableton 11, camelot could be a great MPE/advanced midi mapping solution

Is this the one that Apple bought and put into Logic?

  • Need some advice on Nembrini's PSA-1000 / Jr.

I want the flexibility to process in stereo from time to time, but would mostly be using it on bass, 303, kicks etc. I'm just curious if the 1000 model will convert all those mono signals to stereo? Or if it can do mono processing as well as stereo?

Jr isn’t mono. It’s dual mono (like most other fx). Meaning, both mono and stereo signals can be processed, stereo signals will remain stereo, BUT you can’t have different settings for L and R side.

The advantage of the big brother is that you can create stereo image out of mono source.

Exactly, if you set the spread knob to 0 it’ll make it mono. I mostly use it for bass and have never so far used different left/right settings so I could have done equally well with the Junior. But for a small difference you have the options... as far as I know psa1000 can do everything the junior does plus mid/side or left/right processing.

  • What I'm looking for in the big brother is actually the opposite - keep mono as mono for bass sources. Just curious if it can do that, or as a compromise, link the left and right channels so adjustments are the same.

  • Ahh great that’s exactly what I needed to know. So the 1000 can cover everything the Jr does, so no need to buy both.

Mono will remain mono, stereo will remain stereo with Jr. If you want to be able to send in stereo signal but get mono out (to keep f.e bass in the middle) you’ll need big brother.

I’m not really interested in reviewing desktop stuff at the moment - more than enough to contend with on iOS and I like the touch interface so much more than mouse. But I’m sure it is great. I have Equator 1 but I just almost never touch my laptop. Great sounding synth for sure, I’d love it if Roli finally did an ipad version. It always annoyed the heck out of me that they marketed the seaboards so heavily towards the iOS market, but never gave us anything more powerful than Noise on iOS - never mind no iOS version of Dashboard. Roli are in my bad books, big time.

Totally, its pretty sucky. Don't forget though that there is an app called Block Dashboard that is an iOS replacement for Roli Dashboard, developed by a 3rd party dev. Extremely useful, I would go so far as to say essential.

So i assume from your comment btw that Equator 2 is not a free upgrade for Equator 1 users? I would definitely pass in that case, as I use the original so rarely as it is.

Yes, that's right; it's a paid upgrade and will rise to £120 when the launch offer ends. Equator 1 is still being sold for now, though I can't imagine it'll stick around for long. I suspect the window for an iOS version is closing; given the work they've put into integrating their desktop & mobile offering through ROLI Connect, I can't see them spending development resources on a retired version, even though they've already got the Equator 1 engine ported in Noise. Equator 2 is much, much bigger than v1; the baseline installation is 6.7GB, which is just too huge for iOS. I don't know what that means for the future of Noise; for all its frustrations, the Noise/Equator ecosystem has been the heart of MPE on iOS for me, and I'd be devastated to see it abandoned.

I don't really know what's going on at ROLI; the mods seem to have abandoned the forums, where they haven't released any new posts in months, and user testing seems to have been put on hold. Most of this year has been focussed on LUMI, which is a neat product but at a bit of an angle to their core user base. I'm really glad they've been able to get Equator 2 out the door, and happy to have such a great reason to give them my money, but I hope it's not the writing on the wall for Noise.

Yeah, that company is poorly run and has made some very bad choices, imo. I'd also hate to see Noise go, though. Crippled as it is by a lack of proper tweakability, it still had some of the best sounds out there, even forgetting about the swam sounds.
