Do you avoid "subscription" apps for music making?

  • The only subscrition I have is iTunes Music, family membership (and still have my doubts). Music apps (the only one I buy) with subscription is a NO.

Versions to good, updated apps is ok: Patterning, Xequence, Animoog AU... uh, well, one can dream B)

  • I prefer the "re-buy every few years" model. I'm willing to pay a higher price/app to support a healthy app economy, although I'd consequently purchase fewer apps.

Re-buying requires devs to earn their money by making upgrades awesome. I think most music people would re-buy good quality apps in support of friendly, responsive, and engaged developers.

  • if it goes subscription model. my ipad freezes where its at if need be and i’m back to hardware. i’ve been slowly rebuilding my hardware collection as we have predicted this to be coming for a while. at this point, after drambo and the big super loopy coming out, i’ve got everything i need on my ipad so i will not be subscribing to things, maybe one or two max and they would have be stable, updated, and good communication with customer service.... i can only think of about two apps right now i would even consider a sub too.

if i bought hardware and had to keep paying to use it every month for the rest of its life that would be completely stupid l lol, sounds like credit card debt, except at the end when you don’t want to pay anymore you lose everything..nope.

one possible way is if i paid 10$ a month for example like arcade to grab several apps that’sa maybe but still probably not. hardware and desktop here i come

@wim, I think that paying "the next major version" for Apps is the right way!

    For example, Wotja uses this{

Patterning 2 and Cubasis 3 used this route, launching a major new version after several years, and they’re still getting shit on every forum over it (“why aren’t you giving loyal customers a cheap upgrade???!”)..

I’m not convinced the majority of users are really willing to pay for new versions at all.

ya way too many people cry when a new version comes out you have to pay for.
the way i see it now, you buy an app and that’swhst you get with the trust it will function as designed and stay working on future ios updates.
but major changes shouldn’t be expected from an app and the devs have every right to sell a new app that’s got major updates.... if people don’t want them they still got what they paid for with the current app so really have no reason to complain

I suspect it’s the method of execution. The cost of an update shouldn’t equal the price of getting the app outright for older customers, UNLESS it’s a major change.

But, that's the issue. The app store doesn't enable this. There's simply no way to do it. You can't charge for upgrades to an existing app, and you can't give discounts to people selectively. In fact, developers have no information whatever about who buys their apps unless they have some external registration process, and even then they can't offer discounts to those people.

That leaves very limited options, all of which are unpopular with many people.

If that was a pun against a certain politician, accepted ;)

OK, then what about the Spanish Flu?

  • But it’s all very hypothetical anyway. I don’t see any signs that more than a small handful of apps will even try the subscription model.

These “Oh noes all apps are going sub” scenarios aren’t going to happen any time soon, unless Apple force it onto the App Store with brute force :)

    Upgrade Bundle?
    Was used by many.

There are a couple of downsides I already mentioned, the first being that someone who has had the use of the app for five years gets the same discount as someone who bought it three weeks ago. Not a deal breaker, but not ideal either.

Second, as you well know is the maddening Apple pricing of bundles, where the bundle can end up costing more than the separate app if you've bought anything in the bundle at a discount.

Funny, when a certain politician announced closing borders a lot of countries that preached open borders went nuts, but even those countries closed their borders now.

  • No!

    Here’s why...
When this happens, and it finally will...
How many apps can you afford per month, as 9.95 seems to be the subscription price mostly...and even now there’s levels to this.

Most of us have at least 30-50 apps on ios Wow its getting to car payment world, and this doesnt include those of you who use computer Daws...

I cant withstand that kind of bill to do music without justifying some sort of equal income from It. Also lots of artists/entertainers/educators use patreon and similar at the moment as well...this will put hardware back in the hands of musicians and software will
Lose the battle. If it comes down to supporting an artist etc vs the methods i use to create music, i would choose the app.

Who has tons of disposable monthly income to hand over in order to have choices? Not I says me.

I dont care if I am a superfanboy of a vendor subscription day will be our parting day on my journey. I have hardware.

All the above is strictly my opinion and does not reflect the views of others.

I tried but it's no my cup of tea, sorry...
Something like Zenbeats (year pass but you get the version to you if not update) seems legit

I don’t see the first as a problem.
As you wrote, older customers are not “better” than newer.

Well, if you look at it from another perspective, $5.00 was transacted with customer A five years ago and they have been benefiting from the developer's effort all that time. $5.00 was transacted with customer B three months ago and they may have not benefited from any upgrades at all in that time. Who gets the better value from a bundle? And ironically, who often gets the most upset because they've been a "loyal customer" all these years.

I'm not arguing whether bundles are a good way to go or not, just exposing some of the nuances to how "fair" things are to various parties (the developer included). Bundles do seem to be the least-bad of the available options, at least in terms of not pissing people off.

  • I happily pay subscriptions for things that are actually a service - iCloud, Apple Music, Spotify, Netflix etc. All of these though the subscription is completely unrelated to the software. Hell will freeze over before I pay a subscription for any software though.

(Endlesss is definitely a service, and if I’m still having as much fun in it in two months time I’ll happily pay £4.50 per month for the pleasure)

I have to subscribe to adobe cloud to stay in business. I can’t say it works that well for me, they might update it all frequently, but it just seems to get more and more bloated and they don’t sound much to user input.

Contrast that with blender which I voluntarily pay for and the constant improvements to UI, efficiency, and features combined with second to none community and user responsiveness...

Have you checked out the Affinity suite? I replaced Photoshop, Illustrator, and recently Quark/inDesign with Affinity software.

Not quite as feature packed as Adobe, but I can live with it bearing in mind the money I’ve saved.

  • Absolutely not. Pay up front only for apps.

Yeah, they’re all pretty good but I need after effects though, and that’s the one they like ruining the best, 2005 it was ace, now a right mess but ‘standards’ right? Hoping affinity release an animation thing at some point and light a fire under Adobe’s ass tbh :)

  • 100% drives me insane. that’s why I quit using adobe photoshop and illustrator and went to affinity photo and illustrator.

But i think, we will not get such a solution.
Also, such a concept is not available for (most) desktop Apps or other software, i think.

Not as long as Apple's overwhelming source of revenue is subscriptions and pay-to-win games. I doubt music apps are even a blip on their radar.

I personally like Reaper's model. Buy it and you get upgrades for free for a certain length of time (or until the next major version or two), then you can stick with what you have or re-buy if you want the next version when the clock runs out. Some people are put off by it. I like it a lot.

  • sounds more than the - “here rent my app forever model”

Now, this is off topic, but still:

Trump closed the southern borders on 20th march, right?
This is way later than all other countries i know of.

Which may be, because he thought that the US could never be affected and that nothing to do was required and that all experts in his mind were clueless?
    Just guessing.

    Nope. To be more clear.
Trump banned travel from China in late January. And there was world wide but especially critique on this measure from de Dems. Only South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore were earlier with travel bans from China and these countries are the most succesful in containing the virus. Travel bans from China were only implemented this month (March) in the countries that critized Trump on the China travel ban.
