A new version of Piano Motifs has been released to the App Store. In this version you can now program some constraints for the melody of a motif.

    Programmable melody constraints:
    - In Scale Only: melody will only play notes in the scale defined by the key of the motif.
    - Pentatonic: melody will only play notes from the pentatonic scale defined by the key of the motif.
    - Chord Triad: melody will only play notes belonging to the current chord triad in the motif.

    Enjoy!

    Wow, thank you!

Regarding Pentatonic, Frank Gambale extracts 3 pentatonic scales from each parent scale in his books Frank Gambale Technique Vols. 1 and 2. He then analyzes each of the three and offers his preference, in ranking order from "this sounds best to me" to "it works but sounds boring to me". His books are organized by chord type (min7, Maj7, 2 types of unaltered dominant, 2 or 3 types of altered dominant, etc., and usually 2 parent scales per chord type.

Just some thoughts sparked by the mention of the pentatonic melody (extracted from scale) feature. These are not meant to be part of a high priority request.

Again, thank you and hope you had a great New Year!

There are many pentatonic scales. A number of Indian ragas feature gorgeous pentatonic scales that few western musicians know.

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to say. When I select a key and scale in the app, there is only one pentatonic option.

I brought up the Frank Gambale books because I own them and have some familiarity with them.

If there is only one pentatonic option, then my guess is that if the selected key and scale are D Dorian, I am going to hear D minor pentatonic from the app, which is kind of too ordinary a sound to me. Gambale extracted two more pentatonics - E minor and A minor - while limiting himself to just the notes of D Dorian. Both of those sound more interesting with D Dorian than D minor pentatonic. Thus I am gently suggesting to Fernando to consider these pentatonic options if he hasn't already

You might recall Fernando's statements that a high priority for him in developing this app is the sound of the generated chord progression/harmony and that is why he decided against allowing user scales. So I am guessing this has something to do with only one pentatonic option being available.

I don't know enough about Indian raga or how to build good-sounding chord progressions from them to offer any useful feedback to Fernando on that topic. You on the other hand seem better qualified to do that

Thanks.. so many good things has been said about PM... think I’ll grab it.. even though it’s not Auv3... I think..

  • I bought a "Small Tip" just based on the first few plays. I think this will be great imported into LK and StaffPad. I'm excited to see what the new version of Atom MIDI AU brings into the party.

Are there any other apps that can import MIDI loops worth investigating?

I'm generating on my iPhone and saving the MIDI - 2 Files into a Cloud folder to test later
    on the iPad.

Looking good so far on the iPhone saving files and importing into LK and forwarding the MIDI into Ravenscroft 275 piano. The sync of just tapping the LK pads is off but starting all Pad using the KN transport cleaned that up. I was concerned for a moment because it didn't sound right.

This app just keeps getting better and better for quick "composing".

  • I am accumulating more and more saved motifs. I know have over 50 and I worry that if the program crashes or my iPad crashes or an update to iOS create problems, I will lose all my motifs. As an example, I once lost all my emails when I updated iOS to a newer version. So, is there anyway to incorporate a “save all” (in one file) that can be retrieved later so it could be loaded again or transferred to another device?

  • I need a way to sync Piano Motifs with DAWs. Can anyone recommend a workflow to do this?
My preferred DAW is AUM and it supports Ableton Link and Audiobus but must be the MIDI Clock Master and won't slave to any other clock source.

This would enable another approach for me to create loops of audio and not use the MIDI file artifacts. Just an idea but maybe someone has some good advice.

MIDI files into LK is my current best strategy to build compositions with more that 2 aligned
    parts.

Piano Motifs doesn’t have any kind of sync at all so I’m not sure how you could get it to sync. I use Nanostudio 2 myself

I have asked for a batch export in the past myself or a way to select multiples to export at the same time but I think currently you can only export one at a time.

OK. Piano Motifs does have a BPM setting and my DAW's do so I'll try running a metronome and experiment for hit "Start" on ONE to manage the timing issues and see if PM live MIDI into AUM allows me to record audio loops and avoid the MIDI file playback requirement.

I wonder if Piano Motifs could offer an update or IAP for an interop standard. I'm sure it's occurred to @azul3D_Apps but I also no it's not a trivial decision for many programmers that have a working product that's generating income. @coniferprod's SynthJacker comes to mind as an example. The main use case was AudioLayer and the app updated with an auto-sampler feature... ouch.

  • Yea pls to AuV3

AudioKit source code might be a good place to start since they now have working stable
examples of AUv3 apps to build on. A real programmer might have some useful advice on
making the leap. Piano Motifs would make an excellent MIDI FX AUv3 app but I've read that
it's not well documented. Again, it's a cost benefit trade off for the developer to wrestle with.

  • I can’t seem to get both the melody and accompaniment from the export. I click on the 2 files option and export to BM3 or AudioShare but it only sends a single file.

When I use midi out I can record melody and accompaniment in any program but the export is only bringing along the one part.

Am I missing something obvious here?

Really love this app more and more each time I use it but would love to solve this issue.

    Thanks!

Send the 2 MIDI files into a folder on your iPad/iphone using the Files app to choose the location. Then in your DAW import each file individually. Share is probably coded to handle one file so only the first is expected and processed by the receiving app(s).

I only needed 2 files because my receiving app would merge both melody and accompaniment together sending them out on channel 1 only when I want 1 and 2.
So, 2 channels works great for me and always putting them into a folder always me to have melodies 1,2,3,4 and accompaniment 1,2,3,4 too. Then I import them into 8 channel masterpieces... or at least I'd like to someday.

I just successfully exported the two files to the Files app, one melody and one accompaniment but when I try that in Audioshare only one file shows up so it may be an issue with AS that can only import one at a time (totally a guess on my part). I didn’t try BM3. You could export both files to Files first then from there to AS. Hope that helps!

Thanks to you both! Looks like I have to use the Files app but at least that works well.

  • Can the two mid files be imported easily into Evolution Mobile? Also can I record the midi direct into Evolution.

  • A new version of Piano Motifs (v2.17.1) has been released on the App Store. This new version has the following new features:

    • Secondary Dominant chords are now available for programmed chord progressions
    • Added a Revert button. This button reverts to the previous motif, useful when you skip a motif by mistake.
    • Fixed Pentatonic melody constraint mode. This mode was always using Major Pentatonic scale and not a Pentatonic scale corresponding to the scale mode.
    • New chord progressions for randomly generated motifs.
    • Minor bug fixes and enhancements.

    Enjoy!

@thenoneone, if you backup your device all app data should be backed up. Also, you can selectively backup certain apps if you backup to iCloud: https://support.apple.com/guide/icloud/back-up-fewer-apps-mm6a9671f057/icloud.

@McD, agreed. Unfortunately I can't currently make any promises on AUv3. If it materializes, it will be a very long term project.

It's best to surprise us, if you make the leap. I'm currently frustrated by 2 apps that
exposed a future update and then took a lot longer than anyone expected. It damages
the brand because we just think these apps drop like leaves from the Apple Store Tree.
What goes into making one is deep voodoo. I've seen a couple reader here declare they were going to make an app and it might take them 2-3 years to get something working
    well that makes a contribution.

Imagine starting down a road with a unique vision and someone ships something similar
before you do and it's better... so you add more features and more time to ship anything at all.

  • We are not worthy, @azul3D_Apps! Another great update.

One suggestion I could make is a new app with the features of piano motif with like your magical algorithm and a generate button where you can tell it what to do like with the settings button, kind of like the app Riffer. I’m not a programmer though so I’m unaware of how much of an undertaking that would be but it does seem like a lot of work to completely rewrite an already existing app for auv3

  • A new version of Piano Motifs (v2.18) has been released on the App Store. This version has the following new features:

    • Parallel key chords can be used in programmed chord progressions.
    • New chord progressions.
    • Minor bug fixes and improvements.

Thank you for your brilliant app! Five stars!
Can you up tempo to 180bpm?
Sometimes 150bpm it is so slowly and Cubasis can’t stretch the midi clips.

I did a check in with the latest version for some Auto-Composing.

    1. I selected a key: F Harmonic Minor (always good for some emo drama)
    2. I Selected a 16 chord progression
    3. I generated 3 sets of Melody+Accompaniement Pairs saving into a Folder

I open all 6 of the MIDI files into LK tracks and assigned some iSymphonic presets to the 6 tracks. I liked the combination of 3 of them and this is a recording of the results:

And anyone can do it without having to know more than a few common chord progressions.
Of course, there are wrong chord progressions that might make more original sounding music and someone could get attention by making "strikingly good" music by breaking conventions.

I think there's a whole arena of making song forms from loops created for each section in various lengths.

Matching up Piano Motifs keys and scales with other auto-generators like Riffer and Fugue Machine are also worth exploring.

Putting a motif through a sync'ed Delay effect is also going to generate something useful quickly.

Don't forget to Tip your Developer. I think the TIP button should be a standard for our favorite apps rather than the eventual slide to subscription services which insure income but reduce user bases.

It would be cool to see a free app with a TIP button that actually made a profit for the developer... dreaming, right?
