  • @lukesleepwalker, @mcd, thanks for the feedback and suggestions. PM's minimum granularity is 1/8 notes, so 1/16 notes are currently not possible. The "NO NOTE" option is currently there. If you select the "-" you will get a rest for the corresponding beat. I am thinking of adding a hold option for a beat. With this option the previous note in the pattern will be held for that beat. With that option you would have the ability to have a granularity from a 1/8 note up to a double whole note.

Good to know. For 16ths I’ll just double the BPM in the DAW but a 16 element row of options would help improve the quality of the basslines to at least 2 bar. I can massage the bassline in the DAW but I’ll get as much help from you that I can get.

I’ll try the (rest) “-“ option. As it currently works I’ll need to make short basslines and merge them in the DAW for something less hypnotic. The current version is great for Kraftwerk stuff but none of the melodies have that feeling. But maybe making a bunch of 8 note loops that can be joined for better basslines is worth looking into. I’m learning more about LK and might start mixing sections into longer pieces with Piano Motifs making the sections.

I don’t like the fact that freezing seems to give me 8 copies of the same bassline but I need to mix up the arps
While keeping the chord progression intact to solve that.

Rests will add some nice spice between sections.

Yowza, the user specified arp pattern is great! Very clever UI to squeeze it in. If the user could set the length of the note for each arp step from 1/16th through 1 it would make bass lines even more flexible and powerful.

I agree... it would also be great if:

    1. NO NOTE was an option to create syncopated arpeggios
    2. a row for Note Volume (1-10) to create accents
    3. up to 16 notes (it's a sequencer default)
    4. TRIPLETS too

But Note length is a good place to start. I only ask because you take good ideas and make them happen when they are possible.

    Second all the above.

Cheap? I think I'm about $9 into tips, total. So, Fernando has made close to $20 in tips considering Apple takes a healthy "vig" for processing the credit card transaction.

That's really why devs should put a PayPal link or something similar in their apps. PayPal is not ideal actually for small transactions as they take a lot too, but there is probably a better platform for small transactions. Maybe buymeacoffee or ko-fi or something.

Apple was taking 30%, but this year with their small business program they have lowered it to 15%.

I wonder what Google’s terms are for Android apps through the Play Store.

Does Microsoft use the store model for Surface apps?

  • Piano Motifs makes a good generator for Ambient sounding projects. I got the new DRC "Constellations" IAP pack and drove it with some Piano Motifs MIDI's in LK... lot's of Eos2

Very relaxing, dreamy and ethereal. Yes, PM can generate some good music for ambient tracks. Just set the bpm < 30, pick chord sustain accompaniment and feed it to a warm, soft pad. Experiment with different sounds for the melody, add some delay effects, and that’s it. Some examples here:

  • Less is more (if you're seeking stillness).

  • A new version of Piano Motifs (v2.23.1) is available for download. This version has the following new features:

    • Settings are now saved when a motif is saved to the Library.
    • 3 new options when selecting a motif from the Library: Play Motif, Load Motif and Load Settings.
    • Added a hold note option for user defined arpeggios.
    • A new setting allows you to set the number of times a programmed chord progression should be repeated in a motif.
    • Settings Screen is now a full window screen.
    • New chord progressions.

    Enjoy!

I am not sure how to use the new “load settings“ option from the library. And I don’t think I understand why I would use it?

Also I would like to use the new “play motif” within the library without exiting the library and then going to the main screen to play the motif, then hitting “end” and then hitting the library button to get back to the library. I would prefer auditioning the motifs within the library without ever leaving that screen. It’s just a hassle going back-and-forth auditioning several motifs especially when I now have over 100.

You’re doing a fantastic job every time you make additions to the program!

  • Just trying out the new version and as usual it is fantastic. Many thanks @azul3D_Apps
Couple of thoughts ... as @thenoneone has said the separate screen for settings is good but I think it would be better if all of the options were visible at once without having to scroll down. Now the full screen is available perhaps there is enough room?
Second request is some way of ensuring that the sound on multiple audio file outputs from PM start at the same time. I think there is a delay from the start of the file to the start of the audio. Eg trying to sync two files from PM, one at say 50bpm and one at 100bpm in AUM is a bit trial and error. All suggestions welcome.
Great ambient tracks by the way @McD and @azul3D_Apps

  • @azul3D_Apps Great update just jumping back into this app now. It’s probably been asked a thousand times already but is there a conscious reason why this app is standalone only and not at least IAA or Audiobus as having the app inside my DAW of choice would make it so much more usable rather than switching screens and home button pushing.

I am probably missing the point and there is obviously a good reason that I’ve missed and is a question rather than criticism . But with all this wonderful functionality it brings now it’s missing out on the current iOS action !

Thanks @thenoneone, great to hear you have found more than 100 motifs worth saving!

The "Load Settings" option would be useful when you want to just load the settings of a motif to immediately generate a new motif. It just loads the settings and not the motif itself.

For auditioning in the library, I will see what I can do to make this flow better. Can't promise this will be on the next revision, but I will investigate what can be done.

    Thanks @GeoTony,
At some point in time Piano Motifs will need a UI revamp to accomodate for all the settings that have been incrementally added. I will see if I can work something temporarily in this front, but would want to avoid having different layouts for different device sizes and orientations.
On the audio file, I will have to investigate but this is one of those things that might not be an easy thing to fix. You are probably having to trim the start of the audio files or having to adjust the beat offset in AUM, which is probably a pain.

Hi @Jumpercollins, unfortunately with the current code base IAA (which is being deprecated by Apple) and AUV3 aren't possible to implement, so the code would need to change significantly. If feasible, it will surely be a very long term project, I don’t want to create false expectations for you.

  • I found another good use case. I sent Piano Motif streams into Syntronik and saved 2 4 bar loops in Koala in AUM.

Then I played the 4 bar loops in Koala and played a melody over the top with Syntronik. Using an Arp-based preset in Syntronik adds extra variety:

  • Very clever idea!

    Loved the results.

For all the great ideas on improving and polishing this app over the many months, @azul3D_Apps should seriously consider gifting you a very nice dinner!

We all know how exciting it is to see a developer create a feedback loop with their customers and
    add requested features.

I tried another idea... feed variations of Piano Motifs patterns into AUM and record the loops generated.
Then load up all the loops in AUM's File Players and trigger them manually. Unfortunately sync'ing Piano
Motifs to the AUM Loops is shakey and there's no way to sync it up. If Piano Motifs could send a clock or trigger AUM to start it would be great but MIDI sync to external apps in AUM is a problem.

I suspect manually editing the loops in AudioShare to get a fixed length is the key.

Anyway, the variations and instrument choices are nice if the timings are a bit flakey:

  • An excellent example of the virtually unlimited mileage you can get from a single motif.

More than anyone, you have expanded on the potential of this concept exponentially, McD.

@azul3D_Apps Ok thanks for getting back I understand. Looking forward to seeing where you take this app in the future.

  • Thanks @azul3D_Apps , happy to wait rather than you waste time on temporary solutions... It is low priority.
@McD , your last PM into AUM technique is the one I have been using and yes, timing is tricky. Would be nice to have a simple solution. Your track is pretty good despite this 👍

Thinking this though... I should just save the MIDI files and load the MIDI Stems into LK which sits nicely
in AUM's MIDI app slot and respects the AUM transport events.

But I'll keep looking at various approaches to see what synergies evolve between these tools.

I think I'm ready to consider generating A, B and C Motifs and flip between them to make a longer form
piece. I need to do more work with LK to master the "scenes" and how to switch between variations.

  • @McD very nice, would love to see a video on this technique
