I’m enjoying the 3channel update. This is my first experiment... an 8 bar progression and sent into 4 instruments in AUM but with Rozeta Scalar so I can quickly shift the melody and chords but all stay/forced to C Minor.

It creates alternative melodies that are coherent from the rhythms.

One take and little editing except a pass through AudioShare to chop the silence from the start.

I forced it into C Major for a little bit in the middle for the change in feeling.
Scalar is useful when doing live work to add extra variety to s short loop.

  • Agreed @ghost_forests , there are very few negative comments on this thread which is nice and could be used as an example for a few other threads😊
@McD , frighteningly good for something with so little human input. Not meant in a derogatory sense but just an observation on the power of the app and your ability to produce something so musical from it.

A new version of Piano Motifs (v2.34) is available. New in this version:

    • Third MIDI Track with a sustained chord per bar is now available for MIDI Out. This track is ideal for strings, chords, or pads.
    • Improved third MIDI track generation so that even when bass accompaniments are used, if there is a programmed chord progression, a chord will be generated in the third track.
    • add9 chords are now generated for scales other than major and minor scales.
    • Fixed incorrect chord timing on third MIDI track when motif is configured to have melody swing rhythm.
    • Fixed incorrect duration of silent bars in arrangements when motif is configured to have melody swing rhythm.

Please note that the third channel will have the same MIDI destination as the one selected for the accompaniment channel, but, of course, using a different MIDI channel.

    This is amazing! Congrats

Also from me a big thanks for all the updates you provide to this brilliant tool!
Have you thought about a desktop version of this app at some point?

And another track based on your app :

  • Every time this thread pops up it’s because there’s another update. ❤️❤️❤️

Makes my day every single time!

How did you make the soprano arpeggio sequence?

  • @Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr : Which one do you mean exactly?
I started with the MIDI file output from the app and put that into Ableton. The sounds are from Arturia Pigments and u-he Zebra.

The one that comes in at 2:09. It sounds like maybe portamento is being modulated?

  • Digging these jams fellas @McD & @JimP4nsen! One thing I love about this forum - you guys never let me forget about the best apps that may have gathered a bit of dust otherwise! Time to get back to Piano Motifs!

  • This thread is like drinking from the jug of joy.

  • Well, that didn’t take long to get something I like! First time playing around with the midi out feature. This is Synthmaster One and then House Mark I running the accompaniment. Good times, excited to play with this some more again.

  • Such a brilliant app ... gets better every week! Ugly but with a wonderful personality. And yes a fly-through vid of the newer features would be greatly appreciated ... I'm sure I only get a fraction of how to really let her rip.

Bit unnerving though ... anyone else feeling increasingly redundant?

An update worthy of a decent tip.

  • @azul3D_Apps Great update!!! Requesting a new feature, please consider if it is not too much effort to implement.

I would like to seamlessly generate one new motif after another (without going via song mode). Currently, I have to "END" currently playing motif and press play to generate a new one which leaves gap in between. This feature will allow smooth transition from one motif to another (new)

  • Thanks for all your positive comments!

@mcd, always the first to put new features to good use and exploiting them in very creative ways!

@JimP4nsen, great track! No, I haven't thought of a desktop version (not enough bandwidth).

@obo, cool sound, glad to hear you can get music you like quickly.

@sujoybose77, I know this is probably not exactly what you are looking for, but have you tried increasing the number of bars in the Settings screen? You can get longer motifs this way.

I want generate one new motif after another with no breaks in between... Not exactly looking for a longer motif..

can you describe the transition of Motif 1 to Motif 2?

    Lets consider 1 to be a 4 bar progression C Am F G
and consider 2 to be in the relative min Am G F Am

Would you want the last bar or 1 to also be the 1st bar of 2 so the C major 1 end while
2's Am are both played in melody and chords?

This is the only use case I can think of where song forms A, B, C, A to have motifs change.
What you mean by "no break" is the key to understanding your idea, I think. Should they overlap in some creative way? If my memory is good music theory calls overlapping motifs
    "elisions". Google says:

An elision is a special device for joining phrases together in an overlapping manner. In an elision, the final bar of one phrase is simultaneously the first bar of the next phrase.

I'll bet this is tricky to implement but possible. It would work best of the overlapping chords
have common tones... which means they differ in roots by a 3rd or 5th in either direction in a related key (one that adds or subtracts 1 or maybe 2 sharps or flats in the key signature.)
This would insure sone common tones to make an overlapped chord. I'd probably use the root of the 2nd motif as the new baseline root.

I do agree this would make Piano Motifs a lot more inventive since an elision really throws a little surprise at the listener... it's an unexpected event and that's generally away of waking the listener up by not feeding reams of predictable patterns. It's a little kick to the side of the head.

From a programming point of view the app could offer "elision" between song parts and let the user select 1, 2, 3, 4 bars (or beats if the app is updated to allow defining progressions on beat boundries) of overlap. That puts the creator in charge of approving a useful elision
and rejecting elision that just sound too chaotic. Some might like to really push elisions and make something very unorthodox.

Great idea... let's see how challenging this is for @azul3D_Apps. If might be easier if he re-designs to support note oriented and not bar oriented chord progressions. But even with bar oriented I think an elision is probably possible to consider adding.

This video explains musical elisions pretty well:

  • @azul3D_Apps you rock, great updates as always

So far, with Piano Motifs he keeps moving the goal posts every few weeks. It’s a great model with a tip jar.

I hope we’re helping @azul3D_Apps justify the additional tinkering with his app.

  • A new version of Piano Motifs (v2.35) is available. New in this version:

    • User Manual
    • New Chord Progressions

Are these new progressions that you have added to the default motifs? I don't see any changes to the user defined chord progression options offered.

The progressions added were to the set of preset chord progressions for the generation of random motifs.

  • @Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr : ah, now I know what you mean :)
That's just an additional melody I came up with and it is using the Pigments preset "Chords a la Mord".

    @azul3D_Apps, @Obo : Thanks! :)

  • A new version of Piano Motifs (2.36.1) is now available. This version has the following new features:

    • Added the ability to shift motifs by semitones in the Arrangement Screen.
    • Added new preset chord progressions for randomly generated motifs.
    • Updated User Manual.

If you like Piano Motifs please consider leaving a review on the App Store.

    Enjoy!

    Wowee, wow, wow!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for implementing my semitones suggestion!
This is going to open up quite a few doors for modulating (key change) phrases. (1, 5, 1, 7 … and that’s an obvious modulation although there are much better and more appropriate examples than that)
    This is an exciting update!

  • A new version of Piano Motifs (v2.37) is available. This version has the following new features:

    • Added functionality that allows for a rest bar (silence bar) every 2 ,4 or 8 bars on the accompaniment.
    • Added a new random chord accompaniment for randomly generated motifs.
    • Refined algorithm for the generation of the 3rd MIDI track.
    • Updated User Manual
