A new version of Piano Motifs (v2.37) is available. This version has the following new features:

    • Added functionality that allows for a rest bar (silence bar) every 2 ,4 or 8 bars on the accompaniment.
    • Added a new random chord accompaniment for randomly generated motifs.
    • Refined algorithm for the generation of the 3rd MIDI track.
    • Updated User Manual

If you are enjoying Piano Motifs please consider leaving a review in the App Store.

    Enjoy!

    You're an absolute machine!

Can you elaborate on what the new random chord accompaniment for randomly generated motifs is about? It's not readily apparent how that works when I look at the latest version.

    Hi @lukesleepwalker,
this is something that was added internally for when you generate motifs randomly. When this random chord accompaniment is chosen by the app, random beats of the bar are chosen where a chord is played and also the type of chord to be played (regular triad chord, suspended chord, extended chord). This just adds more accompaniment options for the app to pick when it is randomly generating motifs. If you choose the Syncopated Chord Accompaniment Style you will probably get more variety of accompaniments because of this new feature.

I think it means when you tell PM to randomly generate a motif it also generates new random chord accompaniments. I don’t think it would be something you would necessarily notice because it happens randomly in the background, he probably added some new algorithms.

OK, I’ll listen for that! Thanks for the explanation.

  • I can’t get over how awesome it has been watching this developer nurture this app into the ultimate melody ninja that it is today.

Great to know. This app is like a fine wine…..

  • @gusgranite, @poppadocrock, comments like these are always encouraging and motivating to continue adding improvements to the app. Thanks!

@lukesleepwalker, here are a couple of examples of what the new accompaniment can produce. Like I said, the probability of getting this type of accomp is greater if you choose a "Chord Syncop" Accompaniment Style.

Oh, very nice! I like the variety there—I’m off to play around. Thx!

  • Just thought I would thank @azul3D_Apps for his continued development of a great app by doing a quick track… This popped out on the second click of the ‘New’ button… PM playing Roli Noise, MoodUnits Waverley and Swam Flugelhorn and me playing GeoShred…

  • @azul3D_Apps one of top dev's for sure. thank you for the constant improvements. a gem of an app.

Really nice. What GeoShred instrument did you use for that pedal steel like sound? Or is it GeoShred pointing at an MPE capable app? I like it’s tone quality.

Thanks @GeoTony! Great instrumentation and solo!

  • I like the 1/2 step controls in the arrangement menu. I find a Motif sequence I like and
then make an arrangement where I repeat it with 3 or 4 1/2 step transpositions like:

    Cm - Em - F#m - Am repeat
    or
    Cm Em G#m repeat

This was created using the 4 1/2 step transpositions and then decorated with various
Roli Noise presets that I liked.

Thanks @azul3D_Apps and @McD. Lovely track @McD , it’s amazing how the starting point of PM can lead to such diverse creations. Re GS patch, it is the stripped down preset explained in https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/45438/biomusic-nature-inspired-ambience and then run through the following effects chain

  • How can I lock a loaded motif to generate new motifs based on it?

„Lock Prev“ is only available, if I create a new motif from scratch.

    @mcd, cool and relaxing modulations.

    Hi @Thames1990,
Unfortunately you can't. The locking feature isn't available for saved motifs.

Loading a saved motif and generating more variations would be an excellent update.
Worth something to me for sure. I hope it's feasible to implement.

I think it's time for me to test importing various MIDI artifacts from Piano Motifs into
StaffPad again to skip the "pencil" work of making motifs. MIDI import in StaffPad was
pretty buggy when I tried it 6 months (or so) ago. I have to keep the motifs short and
use "cut and paste" between multiple projects to generate a lot of instrumental parts
    that were coordinated by PM.

  • Yet another piece inspired by Piano Motifs... Just GeoShred payed by a human...

  • @GeoTony,
nice work! Are the percussive elements also driven by PM?

  • @mcd, cool arrangement! The delay on the flute adds an interesting twist.

  • Thanks @azul3D_Apps , yes PM is playing the Tablas in Roli Noise in Channel 4

    I recommend this chord progression:

    C - C - G/B (1st inversion) - G/B - Am - Am - F - Gsus2

    A minor version might be:

    Cm - Cm - Bb - Bb - Ab - Ab - Fm - Gm

These give you a descending bass line. There's a chromatic descending bass but I suspect
you can't get it configured since Piano Motifs tends to offer chords based on the selected root and scale.

  • A new version (v.2.38) of Piano Motifs is now available. This version has the following new features:

    • Added the Phrygian Dominant Scale.
    • Added new "Serendipity" Accompaniment Style. This accompaniment style generates a random bass note, chord or rest for every beat, based on the chord progression.
    • Added new preset chord progressions for randomly generated motifs (chromatic mediant progressions and others).
    • Fixed crash when a certain melody type was randomly chosen and parallel scale chords were used in the chord progression.

If you are enjoying Piano Motifs please consider leaving a review in the App Store.

    Enjoy!

Hi @McD, I might be able to come up with a setting that makes a chord look for the closest bass note to the previous chord’s bass note to figure out the octave where the chord should be played. With this function you could get a chromatic descending bass for such progressions.

In some cases, I can detect the Serendipity element but in others it is pretty subtle. I suppose there’s no way to dial it up or back? I really like what i hear when i can detect it! Best new feature in a long list of great new features… just want a bit more variety if possible!

16 bars of Piano Motifs in C minor, 2/4 into StaffPad using MIDI files. No handwriting required (meaning no "Apple Pencil" note entry).

I just imported the MIDI tracks and used cut and paste to copy parts into specific StaffPad instruments (Oboe, Solo Violin and Violin chords).

Not bad and I think longer and more interesting pieces of music could be made this way without any requirement for music theory except maybe some knowledge of chord progressions in Piano Motifs... but if you let it do it's thing and audition for excellent results you could skip inputting progressions. Just decide on a scale and time signature for a particular mood.

NOTE: Staffpad can also render to a "audio stems" for each instrument to import into a DAW for a more complete and powerful mastering session with the great IOS FX tools like Bark Filter, Magic Death Eye Stereo (which is a tone enhancer as well as a general purpose compressor) and Barricade to watch those peaks.

But this is the complete StaffPad audio render. Staffpad has a "reverb level" per instrument control and volume automation... but generally StaffPad renders quickly and sounds pretty damn good, IMHO. The render sounds just like what you hear in the app every time you hit "PLAY".
