I’m hoping for a clean import into staffpad to assign parts and skip all the “cut and paste” I have been
Doing for most MIDI Import exercises. I’ll report back for anyone that uses Multi-track files to build in their DAW’s
Or StaffPad.
My biggest headache has been interesting parts so far…
After reading the positive reviews I purchased the App plus the Au option.
For those like me who are mostly “audio” guys this app is very “demanding”. I was not able to produce a decent piece of music.
Unfortunately I don’t have the time to go through a steep learning curve and will set this app aside for the time being
I can see the potential but you will need some strong motivation to get anything decent out of it.
Hi @Spinoza , not sure what you mean by ‘demanding’… just pressing Generate a few times normally produces something I can then manipulate into a decent track. No changes to any parameters required. I tend to use slower tempos and switch the 3rd channel on which allows you to point this at either the main instrument or a different one for a bit of variation. Everybody’s different of course so if it doesn’t gel with you then that’s all good 😊
I’ve received a very nice message from the developer giving me suggestions and links. It’s really my limitation. I should not have posted that comment. I should have waited and tried harder. I apologize.
OK. I tried the new Piano Motifs version with Multi-Part MIDI file exports. The whole process took about 5 minutes and I didn’t touch the Apple Pencil once (that’s a tip for you @Paulieworld).
I hit paydirt with no extra steps required.
@McD, I definitely had you in mind when implementing this new feature , and knew that you were going to find good creative uses for it. Nice orchestration!
It’s purely your invention… I just decided it was a keeper and processed it on through. “These are the notes you’re looking for, C-3PO.”
With a little effort I can repeat this process for B and C sections and splice them together. I would flesh out more of the French Horn part since it’s only there to add extra chord notes to the melody I think.
@McD that was pretty great. I think you should go with Rhodes, Bass, & Sax for a different feel.
Using the new MultiTrack MIDI export feature, 6 MIDI tracks imported into GarageBand. Transposed 2 tracks, then adjusted volume levels per track and finally equalized.
I’ll try that to hear what you’re envisioning. Here it is… same notes with different assignments. I also added the “Swing” directive. It needs a drummer. I added a Trumpet. It sounds like a couple notes could be adjusted but I wanted to show what’s possible without grabbing for the pencil. In Staffpad you can slide notes up or down with the pencil.
There’s only one StaffPad Library that includes the Sax… it’s the default Library that comes with the product. For a couple years we have been waiting for a “Big Band” product to be released. It was visible on a video the DWH made a few years ago but never released probably due to issues making all the articulations work or some other technical detail that was not easy to resolve.
In the interim they have provided the ability to import audio so a Sax part rendered in Cubasis could be imported into a StaffPad project. I like to do this with complex drum parts since writing drum parts in StaffPad requires really tricky notations that are hard to get past the recognition software. It’s just easier to write simple orchestral pastiches using the pencil. Importing MIDI from LUMBeats apps is a possible workaround using the drum libraries in staffpad but that would sound like a “weak tea” LUMBeats drummer in my book.
Hi, @azul3D_Apps.
I got little feature request but not sure how anyone find it. I have I lot of chord progressions from Chordjam and Scaler and it can be handy to use them as quick starting point for melody, arp, bass and drones in Piano Motifs. Is it possible to implement midi import into piano motifs in feature updates? Looks like current import doesn't work with midi files.
Hi @lazyass, the current import only imports motifs you have exported in the app's ".motif" format. Unfortunately there aren't any plans to include a MIDI parser and a chord identifier in the app.
I love your handle… I can relate. How many bars of chords do you tend to use? 8, 16, 32? Once you enter them into Piano Motifs it’s smooth sailing from there and mixing the PM MIDI’s with these other MIDI producing apps would be worth looking into.
I was using the Suggester app for crafting chord progressions but gave up because I wanted the chords to be distributed across multi-part MIDI files and PM does that. Scaler is supposed to output “divisi MIDI” but I failed to get it to work. That’s probably on me.
This made me curious, I never heard the word divisi (graphics guy, remember ). Anyway I tried in AUM and without hardly ever touched Scaler before, I got it to work:
1.Choose multi out in SETTINGS.
2.Choose 4 Divisi Part (and a song/pattern from it e.g Lascia) from the SONGS menu.
3.Add four instrument and restrict the midi in to 1,2,3,4,(5,6?) respectively.
4. Choose ARTIST/work and Play A and/or B progressions.
Really beautiful!
Now, I can't get AUM to start Scaler, that's how little I know, but there's a DAW sync setting so maybe better in Logic or Cubasis.
Best,
Edit: One has to add chords to the C section (Duh!) to get it to start, and loop with AUM.
These are the simple clues/instructions I’ll probably need to connection these parts into Atom 2 to get multi-part
MIDI files for importing into StaffPad. I should probably start a new thread on this topic of creating and recording multi-part MIDI from AUv3 tools. One of the better multi-part MIDI players would be one of the classic MIDI Playback systems like KQ Sampei, BS-16i or all the usual DAW’s. I was recording into Cubasis 3 for a while but Atom 2 is a lot less set up and it’s AUv3 as opposed to the highly capable Xequence which is a good sender outside AUM but not a target.
UPDATE: Loading Scaler as a Audio Unit MIDI Processor and turning on 2 Settings:
DAW Sync
Multi Out
Then routing it as input to Atom 2 captured the MIDI as a Multi-part file when exported.
Importing into Staffpad works and there’s one small inconvenience:
The lowest note of a chord is tagged as Channel 1. So it’s on the top line in Staffpad which is counter intuitive. Still, this will allow me to capitalize on Scaler as a great way to auto-generate multi-part orchestral scores without touching that damn pencil until I want edit parts or write melodies.
Sounds like progress The video I watched (for scaler Divisi) the last thing he did, I think, was choosing a keyboard layout under VOICING-LOCK menu so he got the full chord on channel one(1) and then lesser and lesser notes on the row of instrument from 2 - 5 (not sure how many you can have). I don't know, however, which one it was nor can I find the stupid video again (or I would have shared it).
This explains Divisi within scaler and might help some:
Great! Thanks, that was the one I saw, but it was a small inlay version on some unexpected place that I can't recall.😊😂
@azul3D_Apps, hey there!
If you wouldn't mind, I wanted to propose another idea. What if we had a presets system or state-saving feature for the main generator? It's been super helpful to follow @ecou advice from the previous page and write bass, as it significantly improved understanding Piano Motifs. As I progressed, I ended up developing a few recipes for different melodic, harmonic, and bass parts. So, it would be incredibly handy if we could save these “formulas” directly within Piano Motifs or as DAW presets. Currently, whenever I open AUM, it starts with a blank state no matter what I save, so having this saving capability would be very useful imo.
Glad you got some use of my post 😎👍
I think you may be looking for the Save Motifs.
Hi @lazyass, everytime you save a motif in Piano Motifs, the settings will be saved with it. When you load a motif from the Library, you should have the following options: Play Motif (in standalone mode or as an AUv3 MIDI Plug-In in non-Sync mode), Load Motif, or Load Settings. The AUv3 MIDI Plug-In has host state saving, which should also save the Settings. For example, in AUM, if you save a session, when you retrieve that session your Settings should be retrieved.
Oh, great! I thought it's just for generated motifs as alternative to midi. Thanks for help, guys, really appreciate this. Gonna spend next weekend to get to know its capabilities better.
@ecou I can say that you opened the door for me. Earlier I tried to feed it to 4 channels without any preparation and always ended up with crowded mess
If it helps, there is a very detailed manual under the Help button on the top right. If you're interested, you can also check out this YouTube channel where there are several tutorials: https://www.youtube.com/@azul3dapps. In that channel there is also a playlist with some Demos and Tutorials by @Gavinski, @thesoundtestroom and Jade Starr.
Thanks! Looks like I should change altitude and start to read manuals. Seems helpful
A new version of Piano Motifs is now available for download (v4.35). What's new in this version:
• New Arpeggio w/Bass Accomp Style. When this style is chosen the accompaniment will be an arpeggio with a Bass note on the first beat of the bar that lasts for the whole bar. The Bass note is the root note of the chord being played on that bar.
• Random Scale Constraints. When a random scale is chosen for a motif, you can now constrain the scale to be selected from a subset of the available scales.
• New accompaniments added to the Chord & Bass Accomp Style.
Try the new Arpeggio w/Bass style, you will not be disappointed, the bass note enhances the arpeggio. This is an example of a motif using this new Accomp Style:
If you like all the new features being added to Piano Motifs and the music it generates, please consider leaving a review in the App Store.
Enjoy!
Ooooo this is a great update. Definitely gonna try it tonight
A short piece generated by Piano Motifs played on PurePiano and Roll Noise. LFOH! used to add expressiveness by controlling the melody and accompaniment velocities and varying the tempo in AUM.
Very nice @azul3D_Apps 😊
Woah, that is fantastic! Thanks for the great ideas.
Wow surprised to see the Rolli app in use 😂 this sounds great though! LFOH! is another awesome app. Great work 🙏
