A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.38) is now available. What’s new in this version:

    • New Accomp Last Bar Setting. Use this setting to force the last bar of the accompaniment to be either a single Chord or a single Bass note on the first beat of the bar. The Chord will be the triad for that bar. The Bass note will be the root note of the triad for the bar. The Chord or the Bass note will be held for the duration of the bar.
    • New Progression Lock. You can now lock the progression without locking neither the Accompaniment nor the Melody.
    • Improved the melody rest algorithm.
    • Minor bug fixes and improvements.

Use the Accomp Last Bar setting when you want your motif to have resolution or closure at the end .

If you’re enjoying all the new Piano Motif features please consider leaving a review in the App Store.

    Real nice!

  • Hi, I have just bought this great app and I'm little bit confused how melody muting works here.
I'm going to use PM almost exclusively for accompaniment and If I mute melody in Arrange/Sections block it works.
But if I then go to "More settings" and change "Accomp Style" melody is back. Is it a bug or "feature" I have to learn to live with or am I doing something in a wrong way?

  • edited September 2023

@filo01 , Not 100% sure what you mean by Melody muting but melody and arrangements are output by default on different channels so if you only want arrangement you need to select channel 2. If you only want Melody it’s channel 1. Click the MIDI button on the main screen to see the settings.

Oh nice! You got the Progression Lock going, fantastic! The Last Bar also solves a problem that I've bumped into. Thank you!

Hi @filo01, the mute melody in the Arrange Screen is done per section and is only valid for the particular section you are muting, so when you go to "More Settings" and change the "Accomp Style" and generate a new motif that muting won't apply for the new motif generated. As @GeoTony mentioned, if you are using the app as a AUv3 you can filter the channels in the Host and not send the melody channel (channel 1 default) anywhere. If you are using the app in MIDI Out mode, you can avoid selecting a Melody Destination in the MIDI Out screen of Piano Motifs. The biggest hammer to avoid generating a melody is to go to "More Settings" and set the Melody Note Freq to 0%, this will force the app to generate a motif with no melody. Hope this helps.

@lukesleepwalker, yes, the Accomp Last Bar was something I was doing with a one bar section at the end of an Arrangement in many tracks, so I thought it would be helpful to easily automate it 😀

Thanks, I'm using standalone version so I can't use a method you supposed. But I will follow @azul3D_Apps advice below.

Forgot to mention another way, if you’re exporting MIDI, you can always select to only export the Accompaniment track, by choosing MIDI - Accomp

  • @azul3D_Apps Thank you, I don't have a reason for that yet but good to know.

  • A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.39) is now available. What’s new in this version:

    • New Note Sustain MultiBar Accomp Style. This accompaniment is similar to the Chord Sustain Accomp Style. A chord is played on the first beat of a bar but the difference is that multi bar sustain per note is applied, meaning that a note is held for as many bars as it is repeated consecutively in the chord progression.
    • Improved the melody rest algorithm when Melody Note Frequency is set.
    • Minor bug fixes and improvements.

The new Accomp Style is perfect for Ambient Pads, give it a try. An example can be found here:

If you like all the new features being implemented for Piano Motifs and you have a little time please consider leaving a review in the App Store. Thanks!

    Enjoy!

  • Very cool, thanks @azul3D_Apps! I was literally looking for this type of arrangement last night when I was working on a tune. I couldn't get it to be subdued enough--but this new one looks like it'll do the trick!

  • Another cool update, let the good times roll.

Hope it does the trick. It works really well when you turn On the Accomp Voice Leading setting, because voice leading tries to use the same notes between chords.

Thanks for including these tips--I wouldn't have thought of the Acc Voice Lead setting but it does indeed improve the results in some cases.

As you know Piano Motifs has evolved to include a lot of new features that can be used to direct the generator towards a more specific output. Some of them might have gone under the radar. I have started a new series of tutorials that concentrate on the different types of Accompaniment Styles. You can find the first 3 installments here:

  • Excellent @azul3D_Apps , that second one was brilliant, not used that setting extensively but I can now see how powerful is.
Only comment is that the videos might be a bit fast for someone not 100% familiar with PM.
Looking forward to more videos though 😊

  • @azul3D_Apps awesome update! Having a drone in the background sounds really cool. Definitely trying that one tonight 🙏

    Thanks @GeoTony.
A third installment of the Accomp Style Series is up now.

  • Great app, and I heartily recommend it to everyone. Only recently have I run into an issue using it with apeMatrix, in which case when trying to generate midi, i get an alert that says “warning, host time signature, not supported“ or something similar. I can still use it standalone or in other DAWs and channel the midu to apeMatrix, so it’s not a huge deal…

    Thanks @GUB,

This warning is displayed when the Host Time Signature (TS) isn't any of the TS supported by Piano Motifs: 2/4,3/4,4/4, and 6/8. So, the most probable cause for this message is that you have set ApeMatrix's TS to a different value than the ones supported. ApeMatrix has a strange name for the TS (it took me a while to find where it was set). It is call Grid. It can be found in the popover screen that appears when you press the chain-like icon on the lower left, by the BPM. If this isn't the issue, please email me at azul3dapps(at)gmail(dot)com with information about your setup, your iOS version and your device, so we can get to the bottom of it.

  • That fixed it. excellent thank you!

  • A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.40) with minor improvements and fixes is now available:

    • Improved Last Bar Accomp implementation for a more coherent last bar accomp and melody.
    • Improved melody rest algorithm when Melody Note Freq is set.
    • When adding motifs in the Arrangement Screen remember where you previously were in the list of possible motifs to add (Library Screen).
    • Removed dominant 7th chords from randomly generated chord progressions when Melody Constraint is Scale Only so accompaniment is also scale only.
    • Fixed issue where no melody notes were being generated when Melody Note Freq was less than or equal 5%

Hope you’re having fun using Piano Motifs!

  • @azul3D_Apps Thank you! I really appreciate your notes in the videos, really helpful. Would it be possible to also use a mouse or other tool with focusing/targeting circle? Sometimes it's not clear to me where you click/tap.
