  • Sadly, finding many of the sliders etc extremely hard to control with any accuracy. This sounds so great, but is really really hard to play. Unusable for live performance at the moment.

As it will go on like this, it will die slowly......Pity, it had potential.

I’m not having any trouble with this at all. Love it actually. I’m on an iPad 10.5 pro running iOS14.0.1

I mostly experiment with it in standalone mode, but also use it in apeMatrix as AU and have my buffer set to 512.

Just played with it again for half an hour trying to see what these complaints are about, but frankly I’m baffled. It’s all working quite well for me, responsive, sounds great, easy to control, clean sound, no crashes.

I’d buy it again in a heartbeat

Maybe it's working better in standalone. I LOVE the sound, no question about that, but the interface is really giving me problems. Definitely works better with apple pencil but that shouldn't be necessary.

  • Is it possible to midi map the sliders?

  • edited October 2020

I use it exclusively in AUM on a 2018 IPad running 13.7. It’s solid as a rock for me. Sure, the sliders are small and fiddly, but I have no trouble grabbing hold of them to set up. I guess this might be an issue for performance orientated persons, but as I more or less ‘set and forget‘ and do any ‘knob twiddling’ via MIDILFOs, I’m very happy with it as is.

@gusgranite : quick snapshot of the (first few of 4 pages of) exposed parameters, which I have mucked about with as described - it’s basically all of them.

On a 12.9" iPad Pro the scaling is a disaster. I, and others also, emailed the developer already 3 times in 1 week and no reply.

  • Still enjoying using the app regularly. Just hope they manage to get the AU gui scaling at some point. Yeah you can control the sliders via midi and usually I'm using LFOs.

  • I love the sound too and have learned to live with the interface weirdness but it would be much improved with some thought put into how the sliders etc work, Thor remains a great example of skeumorphism (that’s likely not how it’s spelled) mixed with a thought through approach to touchscreens - I love the look of fundamental, it’s so nicely put together visually but that illusion falls away quickly one you touch it... I can however just set up a evolving / morphing patch and let it twingle my brain for ages 😌

  • @Krupa yes, same here. I can set up an automated slider patch and listen for hours, lovely. The mpe is also great now that I know how it works. It's a very unique instrument.

  • My feedback was not necessarily to challenge anyone else’s experience with Fundamental, but more for those who think a more experimental oriented app might be for them.

If I was still on the fence, the posts about the sliders and scaling, as well as comments the the “app is dead” or the like... would put me off from purchase.

I’m just reporting that for my expectations, I’ve been very pleased and have zero regrets. Would definitely buy again.

While it’s true that I was disappointed with the interface cutoff and crashing of the launch build... all of my initial concerns were alleviated with the update.

Bumping up the buffer size to 512 in apeMatrix solved my reliability issue (thanks to @Carnbot ) 1024 was recommended but 512 was all that was needed for me.

In short, if this sort of app appeals to you and you’re not expecting some kind of musical synth instrument, but more an emulation of a sound testing device that can be used to generate very interesting modulated sound compositions... my personal experience is that this app is a winner for my expectations and fun use.

    Recommended :)

  • Thank you skiphunt for that feedback. Glad you find joy in it.

The app is indeed live and well, and the latest updates should have taken care of the troubles such as resizing on the big iPads too - at least that is direct feedback I got from users in person.

I personally have worked with it the past days on my AIR in standalone and AUM with no problems. A pencil is indeed helpful to use the lower section of the modulators for me, but some people have less problems. I use the pencil always anyway for notation, it feels like a proper tool for the math that goes on in there.

All in all, the app should have seen a longer beta test. That would have avoided a lot of the “Kinderkrankheiten”. But that was out of my hands. Still, I am sorry for the fuzz that caused.

Anyway, hope you all have fun with it!

@Bon_Tempi I can’t confirm quirky behaviour on the knobs up top. Horizontal knob behaviour is fine for me, and a lot better. Please check you are not in “harmonic mode” or have quantisation/scale active.

Reliability, control of modulation section and size in standalone is much improved here (iPad Air 3).

I wish iOS sales would permit me buying an enormous iPad as you all use so I could check, but I don’t think we will get there with this rather niche instrument. So please keep reporting what you find.

    Dear Hainbach,

maybe these videos might be better (then my words) suited to demonstrate the problems I still do have with the knobs and controls in Fundamental on my 12,9 IPad Pro ...

Itˋs behavior reminded me very much of to the „knob-discussion“ we had in this forum when the first pagefall apps showed up in the App Store - I guess it was Autony. If I remember correctly - there was also quite a „big“ discussion about how a knob should work on iOS - and in the end the developer finally managed to make them work quite well.

Next to the videos showing how fundamental works - I added some footage showing how the knobs and controls in some apesoft apps work - just to assure you that itˋs not my iPad (or finger ,,, ))) - which acts quirky:

    Knobs on Fundamental - https://streamable.com/sn6oz4

    Knobs on Apesoft - https://streamable.com/036gyd

    Controls on Fundamental - https://streamable.com/v8ymtu

    Controls on ApeSoft - https://streamable.com/7xfpe0

    ——

Not sure if the problem is related to the 12,9 size of the screen - since other users here report about a flawless workflow on smaller iPads .,,

Thanks for posting this these are exactly the issues I have. The mod section sliders are by far the most problematic for me. Hope Sinan can find a way to make those work better.

  • Nice update today which fixes 12.9 size. Much better now :)

  • edited October 2020

Bought it (again). Good update, much better scaling on a 12.9" iPad

  • Cool! Glad you enjoy it - sliders in mod section are also nicer now, buttons behave as they should. Had the chance to play it live in theatre today and I was so happy to finally have a tool I can use fo live scoring without compromise. That was my goal along.

Great update. Work like charm on IPad Pro 12.9 now.

Thanks for the updates, yeah it's perfect for live scoring, I've been using it to soundtrack some audiovisual artworks and it can create great atmosphere and character :)

Made me think of Ambiant Otaku, one of the classics from the Pete Namlook label in the 90s.

Yes! One way I love using fundamental is setting something up and letting myself get inspired by what is happening. The melodic drones bleeps are the basis of this, then it’s a bass, strings and two bleeps on the OP-1, recording it all live. At home I tracked The OP-1 internal mix through tape with a touch of Eventide H3000 for stereo space.

Thanks for the explanation. Really inspiring video. Both for music and video.

  • @Hainbach danke für den workflow Rundgang ;)

Really appreciate these insights and inspiration from other musicians! 👊🏼🐜

  • @Gavinski thx buddy!
@bleep that is cool, thank you for that link
@Charlesalbert yeah these are the videos that are closest to my heart - even if they don’t get the engagement a talkie does, they are important to me.
    @david_2017 thank you, me too!
    @Carnbot thank you!
