That way round sounds better actually
I’m actually looking for a way to do this to turn my iPhone into a Bluetooth launchpad for my iPad, so an auv3 or standalone app would be fine. I’m very keen on the pretty colours and the visual feedback though. Midipad 2 looks like a potential candidate although don’t know if the colours switch on and off.
I wonder if the chordpolypad dev would be open to pretty colours! 😜
The more I think about it it becomes quite clear that AUM needs a 'compact mode'.
In 'compact mode' only the 'circle/icon' would be shown and when long-tapped the other functions are shown.
The circle/icon could still have gestures, swipe up/down to adjust volume, swipe left/right for pan, tap to toggle on/off.
Think of it like a 'solo mode' where only the currently long-tapped circle/icon has its controllers visible, tap outside to hide.
If we look at the video @tk32 posted it would be possible to double the amount of visible Atom icons.
When in full-screen I would not be surprised if it was possible to fit 64 atom icons and use the icons as clip launchers.
This would also make it easy to use the file-player as a launcher for audio-clips etc. etc.
Sure AUM is not my 'baby' and the constant swiping and panning is slowly but surely driving me nuts...
...especially when the track count goes up. (This is where I really do prefer apeMatrix).
There's no doubt that Atom 2 will likely be the best piano-roll for iOS/iPadOS to date...
...but AUM needs some serious love & care too...
@gregsmith it has 8 custom colors to select for each pad!

Oh nice! Is it just the bit that you touch that lights up? Does it stay lit when latched?
Latching sucks on CPP. Latching, aka 'hold mode' only works if a pad contains a midi note. If you latch one pad it will stay lit like that, yes. But if you tap on a 2nd pad to latch, then the 1st pad immediately unlatches! So if you want to latch more than 1 pad at a time, you must hit them all simultaneously. If you tap on any other pad while the other pads are latched.. you guessed it, they all unlatch. It's a very precarious implementation.
I proposed to Laurent Colson many months ago that there just be a simple toggle on / off mode that doesn't immediately unlatch every other pad. Seems like a no brainer to me.
I guess clip launch controllers know that the tracks are in columns, so they only cancel other pads in that particular column. I think we need a specific app for this.
LK will be able to do it nicely I think as it can do all of this, but will take some setting up. I guess once it’s setup it can just be saved as a project.
I think this is a pretty simply use case and lots of apps can be launchpad-like controller. E.g., Mozaic (with multiple instances as necessary) makes a good pad controller with its pad screen, and is probably most flexible/powerful choice you can make. Midipad 2 gets you colorful like Launchpad, simple to set up: https://midipadapp.com/ Lots of other choices, I think, basically all the "controller" apps, like LK, TouchOSC, Lemur, Midi Designer, Sonic Logic, and the like. So if you have one of them, maybe try using it before buying something new.
Yes. the markers feature doesn't work well either. I expected a small window i could keep open and press on a list item to go to a track. But the track functions aren't accessible when the marker window is open. I found it useless.
Also annoying is that I have to scroll for ages to add a new track if I'm at the left edge of the mixer, which is where I tend to put my tracks that need to be accessed live. Plus if I want to move a track from the far right to the far left (so to speak) I have to drag it in 2 or 3 steps as I hit the left edge of the screen after a certain amount of movement.
Plus the amount of space everything takes up as you say. The new update features were really nice, but this is what needs attention next, IMHO.
Picked up midipad 2 as was only 2.99. It’s pretty cool. Supports toggles, colours, and you can swipe rows to quickly toggle on off.
I’ve asked the dev if he’d consider adding the ability for one pad to toggle its entire row (scenes) and if he could add a latch mode where toggling one pad in a column deactivates the others in that column. Let’s see what he says! (Not holding my breath! 😂)
I think it’ll work pretty well as it is - gonna have a proper play tomorrow.
It’s not auv3 which I know will be a deal breaker for some but for using on a separate device it’ll be fine.
This is one of the apps I've been looking at as well...
Now if it had 'auto populate pads' based on a root-note & selected scale with overlap and option to show/hide out of scale notes it could be a really nice tool
(That is in practice the 'note mode' on a Launchpad X/Pro).
Yeah it’s quite a bit of work to get it setup.
However, I’ve got a proof of concept working and it’s pretty cool! I had to create a midi session in AUM on my phone and connect that via bluetooth to AUM on my phone. After that midipad just automatically finds that session and works!
Also I just discovered you can have an ‘up’ action on midi cc’s which I assume fires when you untoggle a pad. Need to play about some more.
I’ll make a video when I’ve got a bit further.
I've published all publicly documented scripting code that comes bundled with Atom 2 here:
https://github.com/victorporof/Atom-Scripting
As of now, it includes support for:
That directory is going to become available in your iCloud once you install and run Atom 2 as an AUv3 for the first time.
In particular, the JS in the "Shared" and "Controllers" directories should you an idea of what's possible for controlling hardware. The CSS in "Styles" should give you a clue about layout and theming. This is all the same kind of code you would be able to add, extend and share, and it's the same API I used for building Atom itself.
There's also some work-in-progress documentation in there about how everything works, so if you were eager to jump into coding as soon as the app is released, early feedback welcome!
I don’t know much about coding, but this sounds amazing for those that do!
I’ll definitely be doing some reading.
Here’s my launchpad effort using Midipad 2. It’s launching LK but should work the same on Atom 2

It’s not perfect as you have to manually untoggle pads. The scene buttons work though or you can swipe the row of pads. The buttons at the bottom stop each track as expected.
Edit: Dunno how to embed insta so here’s the YouTube one...
Agreed
I’m not sure, but it sounds like Tonality AU Chord Pads could be helpful. You can resize the grid to make it 9x9, or 10x10, it has latch, midi learn, automation, auto populates scales, and you can change every pad to be custom notes, just one note if you like.
I just looked it up and turns out I’ve already got that app 😂
Will have a look and see if it’ll fair any better.
Just a review..😎
The way that interface smoothly responds is magic
Any idea when is it going to hit the App Store? 🙂
From experience, if he already submitted it, it can be anything from very soon too 2 weeks
Any videos yet of the LaunchPad integration?

Since it's my birthday today (8th of March) I decided to treat myself a bit.

I was initially planning to get the LaunchPad X but since I got a very good deal on the Pro I got that instead
A multi-track hardware sequencer has always been on my wish-list and since I suck at playing keys the chord mode on the Pro is most welcome. I do wonder if the LaunchPad X will get the chord mode as a Firmware update? But I have my doubts...
Looking forward to Atom 2 when it drops!
@Samu happy birthday 🎶🥳🪖
