New advanced launch settings coming in 2.0.3: "Choke Mode".
This lets you configure clip exclusivity in AUM tracks (so you can use AUM's launch buttons as a mini Launchpad that chokes clips when triggering them).
And here’s a very quick teaser video showing how effectively on-screen track choking works in the upcoming 2.0.3 release:
Nice
@blueveek Would you please consider adding the following function request to your backlog?
Problem: I want to use Atom 2 to sequence a song but the MIDI is partially sourced from files outside of Atom 2. This MIDI may change lots while the song is being created but I still want to use Atom 2 to structure/perform it. In my case that MIDI may have come from a score editor, for example, but could just as well be another Atom 2 instance. When I update any of these files then I need to reload them into Atom, and if there are lots then this opens up room for making mistakes, as well as being a pain.
Existing solutions: NS2/Xequence 2/MTS (maybe others) let you define linked patterns where you change the primary one and the linked patterns update. This sort of works for me at the moment but it either ties you to editing in that sequencer or you need to manually update the primary pattern when you have changes to make that are sourced from outside that editor.
Proposed solution: Allow import of read-only clips which are linked to a particular file and which update if the linked file changes. Read-only to shift the burden of policing overlapping writes to the user. I do not know of any other apps which do this live clip updating.
Downsides: Not sure if iOS gives you a file-change callback so that part could be tricky. I do not know if the sandbox system lets you reopen a file after it has changed without the user specifically picking it again. What happens if the file is deleted? A lot of effort and I might be the only one that ever uses it
+1 on choke mode!
Can you explain “launching with MIDI won’t stop this track “
Sure. There's 3 choke modes that can be set per-clip:
By default, it's in Auto mode. That means it's the current behavior: launch exclusivity when triggering from controllers, and additive launching when triggering via AUM's buttons or via MIDI.
The "Off" mode basically makes Launchpads work like AUM.
the "On" mode makes AUM work like Launchpads.
The upcoming manual might cover these in a bit more detail.
Cross-track choke groups is yet another advanced feature, that's planned for a future update.
Perfect, this is enough to get me noodling. Thanks!
I think this has been mentioned by quite a few people. Independent vertical and horizontal zoom makes piano roll editing so much easier (and more precise).
I appreciate your accommodating linear workflow as there is a lot of music for which “clip flow” doesn’t really work well...and it isn’t practically workable for music (and there is a lot of it) where chord changes don’t happen on the bar line.
Fantastic! This will make mapping from "dumb" controllers (which don't know the state of the atoms) much easier to use. Very exciting!
Yes, that's precisely why I've also decided to implement this – for people who just want to use AUM's launch buttons, or other (yet) unsupported controllers.
As an aside: I wonder if this poll is still representative: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/41445/atom-controller-poll/p1
Brilliant stuff, @blueveek.
I would be surprised if a poll like this were representative.
Also, even if someone has a controller, they may not always want to use one, depending on the situation. I have an LPX, but I usually it only occasionally when i'm at a desk or somewhere with a powered usb hub. Most times I use the iPad without any peripherals.
Fully agreed on all points.
I’ll most likely only use my new LPP while at my desk also, and per usual, I spend many an evening on the couch with the iPad only.
Last night on the couch, I tried opening the project I created at the desk with the LPP, and things just didn’t act like I expected I guess I should say.
It took me a few minutes to figure out what was going on, but I think having the different modes will help.
Great app! Is there anyway to have the selected scale mode and key map to my Launchpad Mini MK3 when selected? That would be awesome.
Can you help me understand do you mean by that? The Launchpad Mini doesn't have custom scales afaik.
If you're referring about mapping notes in order onto pads, you can use "Map to Pads" from the scale menu in Atom, and use the Drums mode on your Launchpad for example.
Ok, yes. That’s what I’m looking for! Thx. Just didn’t try it in drum mode after selecting “map to pads” - will try now.
To be honest, I'm totally new to Atom and not (yet) a power user, and I missed this poll. It seems to me that it's largely true since a lot of people seem very invested in the Launchpad series (which I think is fantastic and should continue to be developed as deeply as possible). I haven't seen many recent mentions of the APCs. I would have marked "other" since I own none of them. As I suggested in a previous post, my ideal use would be to use another iPad as a Launchpad. Now, my use case might not be representative of a lot of people but just throwing in my two cents.
I'm mostly inclined to improvisation/jamming/noodling, not to making finished tracks but more oriented to live performance. In this context, I've found what's most important is having one interface per function, as opposed to having to constantly open and close apps on the same screen, or deal with the nightmare of knobs and sliders mapped to multiple apps (which jump around and require visual feedback, etc).
So, what specific external controller I end up using is not as important as having it as a dedicated one for a given set up. Likewise, hardware vs touch is not so important. At this point, when I have no interest (well, no budget, really) for acquiring new hardware, I'm inclined more towards open integration, and all the support for scripting you've offered is already fantastic. The recent announcement of TouchOSC is exciting and could be a way to build an interface for Atom which is as deeply integrated with Atom as the current controllers are. For now, lacking programming skills , I'll be happy for a while blind-mapping pads in my minilab and my iPad mini and seeing how far that takes me.
To say it again, Atom is a gem and a joy to use!
Trying to map the selected scale to my pads by clicking the box in AUM now. Doesn’t seem to be working. Any other specific settings / routings that I may be missing? Launchpad Mini mK3. Thx for your time!
Hey.
It might have been mentioned before but have some of you tryed to use ATOM 2 with Drambo ( stand alone ) using Drambo to launch clips?
Any experience?
It's fun, but has some problems. The two developers are working together and apparently should be smoother soon.
The biggest drawback for me at present is the need for one atom instance for each and every clip. That means if you want to have, say 10 patterns in Drambo, and have Atom instances launch on pattern changes, you need 10 atom instances on each track and a more routing and mapping than I'd like.
But the Master is adding pattern launching within a single Atom instance. When that happens and when the next Drambo release drops, it'll be the perfect piano roll addition for Atom.
Is this for realz or something that is rumored?
I thought it was confirmed, but now I can't find the post.
I think he said he was warming up to the idea.
choke modes - Awesome!
zooming - Beatmaker3 and LK piano roll has independent X/Y axis for zooming. It's good. +1 for that.
scene launch unsupported controllers? - I've seen some discussion on this but wondering what is recommended way at present? Is there anyway to assign a
scene_launch
note or cc in the same way you do aclip_launch
note or cc or do you have to somehow send a bunch of messages to individually trigger all clips in a scene?+1
Interseting. At this very monent i’m trying to get clip launching to work with CC. So far I have not been succesfull. But i have the feeling that tis is going to be cool as soon as i figure it out 😄. I’m not a black belt IOS musician and brambonaught but i’m working on it.
Choke mode landed super fast
How about Link mode (meaning launching multiple clips , aka scene ) , @blueveek ?
within a week???
