Yes, totally broken. Seems to have some internal feedback loop or something, causing it to produce crazily hot signals. sigh

Have heard back from the dev, and he’s reproduced it. He’s submitted a version that he’s hoping should fix the issue while he gets to the root of the problem, should go live in the next 12 hours or so.

  • The new update is online and it works.

But there seems to be another error.
This samplepack does not work anymore for me inside AUM. DS crashes.

I’d report that to Dave so he can investigate. He’s had to revert to an earlier version of the framework he’s using to fix the feedback problem, maybe it’s connected.

  • I just realized that this app lets us access (some of) the widely-discussed Piano Book sample sets. And I learned a few tricks that might be useful.

First, you can share almost any zip file with the app. This can be a single folder containing the dspreset file and a folder containing the wav samples. Or it can be a folder containing several of these. A large zipped folder is presented in the GUI as a folder, and you can pick one of the instruments in it, easy. I store my data in FE File Explorer, and share it from there. Sharing from Files may not work so smoothly. If that's a problem, you can get the free FE File Explorer, which is a great file management tool.

Second, if you tap on the FILE... button, then Sample Libraries, it seems like nothing happens. Tapping Reload first makes it more likely that you can open Sample Libraries. This may require a couple of tries.

Finally, you need to make the Audio Unit window large enough before loading a library. It will then display the controls correctly, same as the stand-alone. If the window is too small, the GUI is corrupted and will not be corrected until you load a library in a large enough window.

It hasn't crashed for me in a few hours of testing. Seems like the user interface is just a little flakey.

Aside from these caveats, Decent Sampler offers access to an interesting new source of sampled instruments.

This post was really useful. I needed an acoustic fingerpicked guitar and The Venus Theory Stella free version which was available thru the in-app DS store was perfect and I can even have the same thing on desktop. The free version of the Soft Nylon guitar from pianobook was also good but doesn’t go higher than first position. Sounds amazing though. Used your method to install that one- Super useful thank you.

Bumping this thread in case anyone else like me didn’t realize you can do this with DS libraries

  • Just to add a little thing to the DS misery: It has no note stealing.
So if you have finally found a nice piano sound, you sit and doodle in a piano-like way with the sustain pedal down, very quickly new notes will stop being played, because it does not know how note stealing works. If you don’t have unlimited polyphony, note stealing is a very fundamental concept of any polyphonic sound engine. But not for DS.🤷🏼‍♂️

There is a tag ‘polyphony’ allowing to set the maximum polyphony of your instrument. Did you try to set a value to see if this engages the note stealing ?

    Nice find!

  • I've just discovered DecentSampler. Seems ok to me and the dev is very active with updates.
I found it while looking for samples from my first rackmount synth, a Kawai K4R.
I still suffer from guilt after selling it and I'm so delighted I found an awesome free set of factory samples compatible with DecentSampler:

Absolutely. Those K4 samples are remarkable.

One little note. The GUIs may not behave well in the default AUv3 window in AUM. You need to expand the window before loading the preset.

Also, .dslibrary and .zip are interchangeable. You can unzip a library, edit the presets, and zip back up to share with DecentSampler. I changed the default FX settings on some of the K4 presets, since they were kinda overbearing.

  • As others have mentioned, I’d just like to chime in to confirm that this is still one of the buggiest apps I’ve ever come across. I just submitted a detailed report of multiple problems - including ones that could wreck both your ears and your headphones to the devs. I would encourage anyone else who has also experienced bugs to contact the devs to report them, they really need to know about these issues if they don’t already.

Yup, it does not change anything.

    Hello there!
I've not come across any major bugs except for an occasional time when the AU doesn't load, or it crashes, and I have to restart the host I'm using. Assumed it's a memory limit thing with iOS. I was using on an iPad Air 2 on iPadOS 15.7, but now on an iPhone SE 2020 on latest iOS.
What kind of problems do people run in to with this app?

I would use AudioLayer, but there's no way to automate volume swells for strings or expressive instruments.

    Many things
    Standalone sometimes unresponsive

Can't scroll the text descriptions for packs

Bad signal messages in aum, then when the bad instance is replaced with a new instance, all instances crashing

    Lots of crashing in general

AUv3 not opening, just spinning endlessly

Occasional (like 3 times in the past hour) sudden pushing of the dB meter in AUM massively into the red, completely out of nowhere - potentially headphone and ear destroying of listening at high volumes

    Downloading problems

Probably more things I can't think of now. Pretty shocking for an app that's been out this long

  • I just read in a post about Decent Sampler and decided to try out. It looks promising and fun.
I’d like to ask if there’s a way to save libraries in iCloud, or even an external drive, I can’t really fit anything on my iPad anymore. Seems like when you load a library from iCloud Drive it stores it in some “private/volume/iCloud blabla” directory which effectively means it still occupies the same space on the iPad.

Yikes on #6! I guess I've only seen #3 and #4. I just restart the host and it come back. Annoying though.
If AudioLayer had more automation functionality, I'd switch.

I think I might have found a solution - at least one that has kept my current piece with 5 instances of DC going for. 5 mins or so, which is much more than average. I’m feeding it very slow midi, so I can’t see why this should be the solution, but looking at preferences, I see that each instance is set to 100 voices max. I upped that to 200 or so on each and quickly got problems, more quickly than normal. I then lowered it to less than 50 for each voice. I do indeed hope that this solves the problem, because the sounds in here are extremely good!

I had a good half hour play-around with this without crashes on the lower voice settings @JMmusic. I love these samples so am extremely happy bout that!:

    Decent Sampler | sqsl Temp

Here Decent Sampler is being sequenced by sqsl Temp iPad sequencer.

When I first downloaded Decent Sampler for iPad I had tons of problems with crashes: the solution - turn down the voices on each instrument. By default they are set at 100. Turning them down to about 20 or 30 each I magically had no problems.

The 2nd ingredient in this jam is sqsl Temp - an incredible sequencer for ambient and experimental music, but without preset saving, nor is it IAA or AUv3. I’ve been in touch with the dev, and hopefully state saving at least will come soon, but - despite these - this is currently, by a long stretch my favourite iPad sequencer for ambient and experimental music. I will a make a full tutorial on it in the next few days. Also notice here the use of Art Kerns’ midiLFOs to modulate release on the 4th instance of Decent Sampler. Enjoy!

This session makes heavy use of the paid Decent Sampler pack “ Luminate” by Antarctic Wasteland, and also several beautiful free Decent Sampler packs by Venus Theory.
    Props to both!

  • Thanks @Gavinski for the tip on the number of voices! I’ve been using DecentSampler from the very beginning thanks to the beautiful sounds available. Most of the crashes I had were due to memory limits. Streaming from disk and setting buffers around 28k helped a lot.

  • I enjoyed using Decent Sampler it’s the nearest to Kontakt on iOS. However after downloading quite a few libraries from the open sources available.

It just took up to much valuable disk space so because it was quite buggy I binned it.

    I don't think so.

And, worse yet, when you import a dslibrary (zip) file, the original is saved, and the uncompressed actual data is stored internally, as you have observed. You can see and delete the saved originals in iPad Storage. Deleting them does not affect the playability of the libraries.

If you want to delete the internal data, tap Browse at the top, then File Browser.

I believe some of the clunkiness of this app arises from the fact that it's a multi-platform implementation, possibly using some software package to make this easier.

  • Also - I spoke too soon about reducing voice numbers correcting much of the bugginess - I just reopened a saved AUM session - every single instance is just a blank screen, except for the first one which opens already crashed 😅 - and none of them are making any sound despite receiving midi. Please, anyone who is having problems, blast these devs with bug reports. This is really unacceptable for an app that people could spend a fortune on in IAPs. It’s much more unstable than your average beta, despite already having been out for ages. Seriously not acceptable.

  • The first instance of DS always crashes for me if I have opened a project containing DS previously in AUM. The only way to stop this is to quit AUM and re-open it.
I alerted the dev about this a couple of weeks ago but haven't heard anything from him...

  • edited January 2023

One additional note for the AUv3. The GUIs are defined in absolute coordinates, and may be too large to fit the default window in AUM. You need to enlarge the window, then possibly (re-) load the Decent Sampler preset.

  • I also had problems just now with a free DS pack I downloaded from piano book (that very popular venus theory one, forget the name). DS shows as a destination to share the zip to but I get an error message when I try this. I tried unzipping and sharing the main DS file, also no banana. Anyone have a solution? This is really a pretty pretty bad user experience, jesus
