  • I would save your energy tbh, because there will soon be a cross platform app coming out that I genuinely think will be a Decent Sampler killer. Can't say more than that at the moment, but truly, this will kick Decent Sampler into pretty much complete irrelevance.

About mpe, there are a lot of poor implementations on iOS but at least every single synth that markets itself as mpe will give you per note y axis control - unless it is monophonic of course which means it is not truly mpe, its merely semi mpe.

ID700 has a great, true mpe implementation.

Z axis control is not possible on iOS devices apart from the old 3d iPhones. Woodtroller implements quite a good workaround for this, as does Velocity Keyboard and there are others too, like the dirt cheap and open source Beat Pads app, so it is still possible to have a pretty decent mpe experience with your ipad, and when you do, it's a lot more interesting than mere per note pitch bend. Y axis movement and per note pressure control, in particular, add a massive extra level of expression.

If this app can load Decent Sampler, that would be a killer. The only interesting thing with decent sampler are the great available libraries :)

Without spilling the beans: does this new app use proprietary sound packs?

i.e. should we wait until this new app is out before investing more $$$s in sound packs for other apps?

Also...I guess, unlike Decent Sampler, it won't be free?

Was actually just about to pop back in to mention that yes, in that sense, Decent Sampler will remain relevant as the fact the app is free is still a big plus, this other app will be paid. More than that I can't yet say!

OK. any idea when it will drop? Weeks? Months?

Maybe within a month, not totally sure but seems likely.

OK. Thanks for that. I'll keep an eye out for it.

whoa. noob here but never knew about pianobook and was only getting decentsampler instruments through the actual app…

are you guys still using this weird roundabout way of downloading pianobook instruments on desktop and transferring them to ios or is there a way to just download and unzip them on our ipads? thanks!

Your have to change the file extension from *.zip to *.dslibrary.

I use a “Shortcuts” script called “Rename File” to do this from the zip in the Dowload directory and placing the *.dslibrary output into an “On My iPad/Decent Sampler” folder.

Then you open the “On My iPad/Decent Sampler Folder and tap on the *dslibrary file and about 80% install without errors.

I need to try XML editing on the other 20% because the biggest coolest PianoBook files usually error out like the massive Pianos that Christian put up.

NOTE: I also keep the *zip version to uncompress and re-purpose the samples in AudioLayer to make even more
Instruments. It’s easy to fill up 100’s of GB’s of storage with these habits but external SSD’s might be an option for older iPads.

It depends - sometimes you need to unzip the zip file first and there may be a folder in it already suffixed dslibrary. At other times you need to rename the zip file so the suffix ends in dslibrary 😂

Yeah McD...so much good stuff there.

And indeed, especially for paid stuff, better to buy on the decent Sampler website so you can hold on to your original downloaded files. Otherwise if you buy in the Decent Sampler app itself... What are you gonna do when your device breaks down? All those downloads are just sandboxed in there. Will the paid ones need to be paid for again when you change device? Hope not but given the level of bugginess of the app I'd rather not take my chances.

And again, anyone overestimating the significance of the fact this is free needs their head seen to. Not to say that's not great. It is great! But there are plenty of ways to make money and raise your profile by doing free stuff. The free stuff lures people into paying for the paid stuff. And the vast majority of the free stuff on Pianobook or Decent Sampler is created by random people around the world, not by Dave Hilowitz. This is a product and a money-making endeavour, and people should expect the product to function well, regardless of how much free stuff there is. Dave brings in $1.5k a month from patreon alone, never mind paid packs and the ad revenue that comes from a very large YouTube channel, plus the money from whatever extra work he gets due to this exposure. I'm not sure whether Decent Sampler gets a cut of sales from other makers' paid libraries but that could be another factor. This is no more a charity than Facebook is a charity, it's just a different financial model.

There’s no need to unzip or rename the extension anymore. All you have to do is load the folder compressed just the way it came. This process would save you a lot of time and works nearly everytime……. Another thing I forgot to mention is that if there’s a rare time that it doesn’t work, then maybe the renaming, unzipping process will work, but usually it’s they made it crappy is the reason why it won’t work. It’ll just Plain not work

  • This particular organ sampler works on my Mac and fails on IOS. It’s the only error. The most prolific sample maker serves up his releases as .rar files. In my opinion they are not worth that extra step to convert to zip.

They’re already zipped to begin with. I just heard about doing it this way recently and it’s been working fine. It only takes 2 seconds to compress a file, but I think some of them might have to require the wav samples folder along with it in order to work

Did this happen yet? I missed the obituary for Decent Sampler and don’t have a replacement app.

It’s not the app that counts, but the library. It’s been liberating to discover that the whole, much wider, Decent Sampler universe, including many free instruments not findable through the IOS App Store, is accessible directly from the Decent Sampler or Pianobook sites, through the simple expedient of turning the suffix on the whole unzipped zip file to “.dslibrary”, and then opening it into the standalone DS app, and loading in as an instrument. You can then open up an instance of it inside AUM and Robert is your veritable mother’s brother.

Hahaha, that DS killer had some bugs that needed squashing. Not sure when it will roll out, it will come, but might take some time, so Decent Sampler's death throes may be more prolonged than initially estimated 😂

Definitely.... Lots of good stuff, some of it truly great, is available for DS on Pianobook. Better really to get paid packs from the DS website too rather than the appstore. More money will go to the creators, plus you can use your purchases on your desktop version then instead of them being stuck in the apple sandbox system. Or do you also get access in desktop DS to purchases made on iOS DS?

@Gavinski : if the unmentionable DS killer surfaces, will it be able to directly load DS instruments? Or Kontakt ones? That would be the whole point for me. Otherwise, it’s just another sampler, and I’d have to put in all the hard yards myself with samples. Which is… unlikely. Even allowing for the fact that I don’t have pneumatic drills and bulldozers (my latest downloads, from a guy so seriously pissed off at the roadworks outside his house he turned them into instruments) readily to hand…

I don't think so tbh Irena. It will be a proprietary format that ppl will be able to make and sell their own packs for, just the same as DS and Kontakt, but obviously it will have some unique selling points, otherwise there would not even be a point bringing it to market!

  • Hmm. It will depend a whole lot on how many people do that, then, or on whether someone does some kind of conversion app. As I said, it’s all about the libraries.

  • Whatever this app is definitely has my attention.

But yes I really love DS. A lot of the stock sets are fantastic and I’ve downloaded some really cool, unique, and beautifully weird sounding sets from Pianobook as well. Some really cool noise and percussion stuff on there. Also an MS20 emulation that I haven’t downloaded yet (but I’d like to).

Does anyone know if DS works with SSDs? I really want to upload DS and PSP2 patches to an SSD to clear up storage.
