I wonder how the numbers change with Disk Streaming selected… which adds more stress on the CPU/DSP factor. I think the default for anyone that has never made the choice is AUTO which always shows Disk Streaming for me. So anyone facing DSP problems getting in there and trying RAM is worth considering.
I'm wondering that too. Seems like Disk Streaming still needs to cache data in RAM, so there's no free ride in terms of memory use.
Wouldn't the fact that the instrument files are compressed zip-archives add additional overhead if they need to be scanned and only certain samples extracted for playback every key press? (ie. to keep things up to speed the instrument files need to be fully extracted when the instrument loads which temporarily taxes ram usage, unless they are extracted on install which would just take up more storage than needed).
I wish the best of luck to the developers in fixing this...
Good news. After this new update all the *dslibrary downloads from PianoBook are now installing without errors. A couple do show some preset errors in the app but everything loads and makes some sort of sound.
I would like a thread where we can discuss these free instruments so people can decide if they want to make the effort. Demos of the instruments in play would also be nice.
I think we’re going to be hearing a lot of music made with this free software. The bugs are getting addressed and the number of
Files available to install is approaching 200 or so. All free with a few compelling commercial offerings too like the Ethereal Vocal product for $10.
Many of the commercial instruments have desktop pricing in the $30-40 range. IN general, they scratch that “Cinematic” toolset category, IMHO. As homemade products they tend NOT to complete with the best acoustic instrument plug-ins but try and create unique Cinematic sound scapes.
NOTE: I was expecting to learn how to edit the XML files today but it appears the developer fixed the import issues for me.
Whoa… it’s now opening some PianoBook sample sets without changing the *.zip extension to dslibrary. Very nice.
I just tried the very beautiful sounding 'spellsinger' Pianobook library for DS. I can't get the zip to open - period. It keeps failing, I can't get the zip to import into DS, even if I rename it with the suffix dslibrary I still can't get it to load....
Are you on version 1.8.3? Check in the “About” pop-up.
I will download and check it out. I’m downloading a lot of DecentSampler instruments that failed me in the past to test if the update helps.
I mainly just use DS for the factory content and haven’t had many problems at all. Is it when using your own samples that these things start to occur? Or maybe I just haven’t used it enough.
It just installed for me by touching the spellsinger.zip and choosing “Share”. Decent Sampler shows up in the Share apps list either in the main list or under more.
My DecentSampler is updated today to 1.8.3 and my IOS version was updated yesterday to
16.4 Public Beta and that may be a factor in my success. I’m going ahead today and installing 16.4 Public Beta 3
“SpellSinger” is very cool… some vocals are similar to the Ethereal Vocal costing $10 if extra reverb is applied.
There are two folders inside the Spellsinger zip when downloaded from Pianobook. One folder is for the Kontakt version and the other (DS) is the Decent Sampler version. Maybe the zip you are trying to import into DS has both folders inside and causing the issue? I would zip the DS folder and leave the Kontakt folder out. This makes the file size smaller too. If you are already trying to import the correct folder then there may be something else going on.
That’s good advice but I just want to let people know I downloaded the file called “The Spellsinger.zip” and used “Share” to import it into Decent Sampler 1.8.3. My IOS version may be a factor too: 16.4 Public Beta.
NOTE: Both Decent Sampler and Kontakt packages have a Folder label as “Samples” that can be used for imports into NanoStudio 2, Drambo, AudioLayer, Chameleon with some effort.
I am on 1.8.3, yes
Maybe I need to update to the latest OS, I'm still on 16.3.1
I listened to that Ethereal Vocal demo and found it very generic sounding. Spellsinger seemed a lot more interesting! Cheers McD!
I wasn't even able to unzip it without that failing!
It might be karma for being upset with product quality.
If it won’t unzip try another download.
Does China change zip files for security? I guess you use a VPN.
Well, be assured I got it to work and I’m sure you will too after some time in the penalty box.
I did nothing but download DecentSampler stuff from PianoBook and install from zip using Share. The update is magic or IOS is much better with w 16.4 beta for Decent Sampler. But a corrupt download is likely.
Our power went out and soon all the device batteries will die and I will go with them.
Lol.... Yeah I will try again. I'm now on the latest OS, though not the beta you're on, let's see if it will work now
@McD well it worked this time, yep, and also was able to open the zip directly. However that way you may be using up 800 mb more space than necessary because it contains the useless kontakt files, unless decent Sampler somehow only takes in what is relevant to it and discards the rest. No idea. Anyway, I'm taking no chances, so I deleted the library from DS, then just opened the zip file, compressed the DS-specific folder, and then used share to open the new zip file, containing only decent Sampler assets, in DS. At first it seemed it hadn't worked, but when I closed and reopened DS, it was there and it opens fine. And sounds GLORIOUS!
Definitely don't forget to use the mod wheel on this one!
I want a Bluetooth mod wheel.
Can I connect my iPhone to my iPad so I can make a mod wheel script?
Wait KB-1 will work. But power is still out here and I should conserve in case we are last. Big wind came and lines are getting damaged probably.
Oh shit the ice cream is going to melt at some point.
Damn... Good luck with that! And that!
Klevgrand do a free app for this. I forget the name. I'll get back to you.
Good luck with the storm.
I've noticed that when I share a preset file with DS, an extra copy appears in the DS private storage, in addition to the unzipped copy it uses. If you look in iPad Storage, you can delete it. I suspect that importing from within DS may avoid this.
Maybe, but I believe there is only one copy of the AUv3 module code for all the instances. Additional instances just add data. This is why all instances of an AUv3 are killed when the memory limit is exceeded.
I noticed that Decent Sampler has an option to enable MPE. I need to give that a test drive from Visual Keyboard or GeoFred.
I was able to download/install 30 instruments yesterday from PianoBook.co.uk. All via "Share" on the *.zip file skipping the *dslibrary name change. Very productive... some packages are in the 1.5-2GB range. There's a synth survey pack at 2.5GB. That's a good test case for MPE I think.
Hmm, interesting. I'd imagine though that unless it has a way of internally assigning mpe parameters, this would be non existent or a very subpar implementation. It might automatically work for pitch bend and mod wheel might be auto assigned to cc74, ie Y axis. But what would aftertouch trigger, and note off, unless the creator had specifically designed them with mpe in mind?
BTW...any slider or knob on a Bluetooth midi controller, or any mod wheel on a Bluetooth keyboard, will do this.
I just tried velocity keyboard with this. When VK was set up to send out mpe, and mpe was enabled in decent Sampler, I was able to get mpe pitch bend working. However I had no luck whatsoever trying to get the y axis on VK to control the tone of a Venus Theory Stella preset using cc74
Perhaps Stella came out before MPE was added to the product.
CC=74 is defined in the standard as "Filter Frequency".
In research for this discussion Google expose a "Q&A" section for Decent Sampler at:
https://www.decentsamples.com/qa/
There are 2 questions related to MPE and both precede the release of the implementation.
One of the Answers mentions that the developer of the sample set needs to implement the MIDI assignments for CC's so it's possible Venus Theory implemented his package prior to
MPE being added or documented.
But the per note Pitch Bends are implemented by the audio engine coder and not the sample set creator.
If anyone notices a Decent Sampler instrument that implements CC74 (Filter Frequency which would change the tone of the instrument) please share the discovery.
More Googling discloses the Decent Sampler XML Implementation documentation:
https://www.decentsamples.com/docs/format-documentation.html#the-cc-element
There is a Filter Section with Frequency and a CC section where an incoming CC can get mapped to an instruments controls so CC=74 mapped to Filter Frequency should be possible in the XML definition of the instrument which exists in the *.dslibrary file.
