  • The new studio ones have put a predictable spanner in the works of my decision tree regarding new MacBook or desktop or both 😅

  • Let's see how easy is to disassemble these new Mac Studios to clean the fans of dust.

This is the first metric to value a computer with active cooling. If not, in a couple of years you can have a noisy system that have lost part of its raw power.

Honestly, my dream is to see in the future a new M2 Mac Mini without fans.

In the meantime, the Macbook Air used as a desktop, connected to an external monitor in clamshell mode, it's the most reliable option for a desktop Mac.

I only hope that its future M2 itineration will maintain the absence of fans.

@samu so you going for the new iPad Air 256GB ?

Have not decided yet, the 128GB 11” M1 iPadPro is also quite decent with better speakers and microphones and has that 120FPS thing, it’s <$100 price difference here between 256GB Air 5 and 128GB 11” M1 Pro…

Since I’m no longer ’app hoarding’ 128GB is likely enough (Got about 15GB free on my 64GB Air 2). Don’t do heavy video and have no need for multi-gig sample libraries on device.

Time will tell, no rush for now…

You got a nice mention on sonic talk the other day for your meme work, well done! I can’t look at this without hearing Gaz’s voice saying it.

Except usb3 was backwards compatible with usb2 devices, so those didn’t (and still haven’t) become useless. And since every headphone in the world used the 1/8 and 1/4” connector, including every piece of pro audio equipment, needing a dongle is a pain in the ass.

That’s kind of my point… all it takes is a usb-c to 3.5mm dongle or a hub. Same hassle as having to get some new USB2 to usb-c cables or hub when laptops no longer had built-in USB2.

But yeah, bluetooth for now is only a partial solution, for non-critical listening and movie watching.

Usb3 uses the same usb-A connector as USB2. So does USB 1. So my usb midi cables still plug into my mbp or my usb3 hub that’s at my desk without anything additional needed.

Needing a dongle, $9 or not, just to plug in headphones is a pain. Life has much more serious issues of course, but the headphone plug and jack is still in use everywhere else that headphones are used, and pro audio gear is not incorporating lightning or usb c ports for headphones any time in the near future. That’s the difference in my mind between the headphone jack and computer specific ports. However, my iOS devices are not primary music tools for me any longer, so maybe that’s why it bothers me. For casual use I just want to plug in my headphones and do things. Needing another adapter in the chain, with my adhd, can be a barrier (sounds silly if you don’t have adhd but the more barriers to getting started with something, the less likely it gets done).

In the end, none of it matters I guess, we adapt, buy dongles, lose said dongles, buy replacements, move on, lose said dongles, order 2 replacements from Amazon or owc, move on….

  • Anybody want to buy a new-ish 32” 4K Dell monitor :)

I really want to love the new monitor, but not having 120 Hz refresh rate seems like a real miss. That would have been the key reason for me to replace my LG 5K, at least for primary.

Would it be possible to a MacStudio in conjunction with a MacBook? i.e. using the MacBook as the monitor (that should be defiantly possible) but also use the macbook's keyboard and trackpad to control the MacStudio - is that part possible? Can the macbook's keyboard/trackpad transmit keystrokes etc. over bluetooth?

  • I don't see how you'd use the MacBook as the monitor, other than poor VNC-based solutions. But once Universal Control is released to the masses having side-by-side computers should be a seamless workflow. There are other solutions today, but UC should be out any time and hopefully benefits from integration and the Apple polish.

A reliable source says that the Studio Display uses the same panel as the iMac 5K. That’s an LG panel, which is the same as you have in your LG 5K.

Am I wrong here? Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a new entry-level iMac and use that as the 5K display for this Mac Studio? Of course, the entry-level iMac uses a 4.5K monitor, but it's about $300 less, plus you'd be getting a second computer for all that.

You can’t use a Mac as a display for another computer. It’s called Target Display mode, and older iMac used to do it. A big wasted of electricity it was too.

Also, the 27-inch iMac has been discontinued as of yesterday!

  • Does 64gb feel workable on recent iPads? It felt fine for my use on my air 2 but I don’t know whether I’m missing something about workflows on more recent iPads.

It depends. If you have iCloud sync and a iPhone with loads of photos then probably not. I've got something approaching 30Gig just in photos. If you are going to use it just for music then it will be fine.

I’ve activated “Optimize iPad/iPhone storage” in photos for this. Works well.

Yeah mainly music, reading, zoom, and def no photo sync. Can’t think of a super space hungry task.

Does it come from one of those guys who make a living being dead certain about a new mac mini twice every year? 😏

Made me laugh even Studio Display having problems now that the out a A13 chip is in it. :)

On the plus side can or will we be able to run iPad apps on the studio display in the future ?

The last chip remaining in the roadmap is the 4C-Die which will be 2 X M1 Ultras and is the last part of the leaked M1 ‘roadmap’.

Although they said ‘one last chip in the M1 lineup’ so maybe they’re saving it for the M2?

Sure looks like it. Maybe on WWDC they'll reveal the new Mini's (M2 & M2 Pro) and the Mac Pro 'Hyper' with 4 x M2? 🤯

    A Mini Pro sounds attractive...

Holy crap man i just spent 1000 on a 2020 ipad pro with 256gb and what is it, 5 or 6gb RAM? is this new Air officially out and able to purchase? if apples trade in program was so damn cheap... now i gotta sell my pro if i want to afford this Air.... it seems like the best ipad for music production at a fraction of the 2021 m1 ipad pros price...
