Thank you all for your feedback !

and now Version 1.6.4 is out:

    • EXS import improved for certain libraries @Ailerom
    • Instrument load time improved

I'm not sure what to make of it. I did the batch import. It seems to have imported most kit pieces but they are all over the place. Certainly not in the GM placement that the file suggests. Plus I can't find a few things like a closed hihat for example.

Any tricks to the way you imported? I assume you had success with the Mapex kit?

  • First I would like to thank Harry @VirSyn for all the updates that brought the app to another level. The import function has been incredibly improved and it is a lot more reliable now. So once again, thank you for all the efforts you put in updating this amazing app (you got your well deserved 5 stars!)
Lately, I have been creating sfz files for drum libraries (Drumdrops, Analogue Drums to name a few) in order to break down each kit into single elements (one sfz for kick, snares, hihats etc...). My sfz files work as expected inside the Auria sampler, so guess the coding is right. However, when importing those in Audiolayer, I cannot get the different hihats articulations to mute each other. After reading the manual, it seems that Audiolayer doesn't recognize opcodes like group (the opcode not the header) off_by and off_mode which might explain my problem. So I was wondering if my understanding is right. And if so, I am also wondering if adding these opcodes is on the roadmap for future updates.

You're right - off_by and off_mode are currently not support by AudioLayer. You can use the mute groups in AudioLayer ( in the sample editor ) to get the hihat articulations separated. Hope to find a way to set AudioLayer mute groups from the sfz settings in future, but haven't found a simple solution till yet.

Thank you so much for answering. I'll check that.

  • @VirSyn, I was using AudioLayer on macOS desktop trying to use some .WAV samples for a new drum kit in the app and it failed to retain all of my specific settings for the sounds every time I loaded it into GarageBand as an Audio Unit. What am I doing wrong? Everything reverted to a disorganized bunch of samples when I reopen my project.

Did you save your instrument after creating it?

That might be the problem… I was under the impression it was saving it automatically since I set up a folder and it kept the name of my ‘instrument’ patch. It’s a bit deceptive. A visual or pop-up prompt would make the necessity to Save more obvious. Cherry Audio’s interface on their various synths makes this far more obvious.

  • I have tried zipping all my iCloud instruments and then importing the 3GB zip after changing the settings to use local storage. The instructions for importing zips are not to be found. It just hung but maybe it takes hours. Some feedback from the app would be helpful.

Then I tried saving one iCloud instrument and switch to local for an import and the new instrument complains that the samples are not to be found.

Has anyone found a process for instrument saving/sharing that works? I’m on IOS 15.4.

  • I still can't get the Drum drops Mapex kit to load. Seems everyone but me has lost interest (i.e Harry and Drop Drops, although Harry did a lot which I don't want to seem ungrateful for as I'm not). We came a long way though and I got quite a lot of the stuff I wanted (drums and bass) working. Would really like this kit but alas . . . . . .

  • I turned my attention to installing all the interesting EXS24 formatted instruments from PianoBook.co.uk.
I also attempted a few of the SFZ formatted instrument with mixed results . Then I used the AudioLayer Auto-sampler to make some “long sampled” clones of one of my favorite @Spidericemidas presets in Continua.

This is a great product with seriously useful features. I’m going to look for some interesting audio in YouTube videos next.

  • @VirSyn Sorry to bug again, but please add AU automation support so we can modulate the filter etc.

Have made a short video to explain, hopefully this helps you!

BTW: While making it I noticed a bug with old EXS Sample format which made AudioLayer skip every other sample...
...Bugfix is just uploaded to Apple and should be available maybe today.

    But now to the video:

  • How can I delete imported samples when iCloud is selected as the storage place?

Files.app iCloud Drive -> Audio Layer -> Samples (each bank/instrument gets its own folder)

  • Thanks, that was shamefully easy.

  • @VirSyn It would be great if it was possible to load existing instruments into separate layers, as well as control different layers with separate midi channels. It's awesome, that key switches are already possible.

I have purchased a few kits from DrumDrops and others. But the challenge of getting these working in AL with multiple velocity layers and round-robins is beyond my resources and capacity. If I owned the samples already,
    1) what would AL file need to be shared to be able to map the wavs?
    2) would somewhere like patch storage(or elsewhere) work for sharing the mappings?

For what I know, if you already own the samples, I would first recommend to try to import everything using the exs files (mapping for logic sampler) usually included with any Drumsdrop libraries. Recent Audiolayer updates drastically improved the import process and success rate. So most of the exs files should work inside Audiolayer.
Another possibility is to use SFZ mappings. SFZ file is basically a text file with the .sfz file extension. The language used is not to complex to master, especially for drum librairies (if I was able to create my own, I believe everyone could make it).
Regarding your question about sharing the mappings, i can only speak for the mapping I created myself. If we own common kits, I wouldn't mind sharing my SFZ files. These are just text files, I don't think there's any copyright issue as long as we don't share the samples. But I wouldn't recommend using SFZ files inside Audiolayer, because as I mentioned in my previous post, Audiolayer doesn't support yet some opcodes necessary for muting different cymbals articulations, so your cymbals might sound unnatural. I use my files inside Auria, and I couldn't be happier. I even split each kit into separate element. So now, for exemple, can use the kick of one kit with the snare of another and the cymbals of a third one and Tom from another.

  • What are the typical triggers in the incoming MIDI for extra drum sample activations beyond volume and pitch? Or is mapping to volume and note enough? Any standard CC’s?

  • Hello! Working with the latest 1.7 AudioLayer here and I notice I can’t run it standalone: the title screen is displayed and then it just freezes. No problem with AUv3. Am I the only one experiencing this? Thank you!

Try a hard shut down and restart of your device first.

Good idea! However, same problem despite this.

  • Me too. What I did was delete the last state file in the audio layer folder in the files app. That sometimes fix’s this issue. Other times I have to delete app, turn off iCloud on the device reinstall app then turn iCloud back on. All the audio layer instruments are still there saved in iCloud you just have to redownload them

  • I'm on the 1.7.1 beta. Standalone works fine, AUM and Cubasis auv3 works fine, but I'm still getting crashes on startup in Garageband. It seems no one else uses Audiolayer with GB and Harry can't replicate my issue. Can anyone else give it a go? It crashes around 75% of the time when opening a piece for me.

    Normally deleting the file

    On My iPad/AudioLayer/last.state

with the Finder App should solve this kind of problems. Trying to find an automatic solution here too.

  • Hi @VirSyn,
I just made a little multisampled piano, only to realise that if I hold down the sustain pedal, I get exactly 16 notes before notes are not triggered at all. With most sounds, this is not an issue, but as a piano player you very quickly hit this limit (unless you are playing Bach 😊). So there seems to be missing a note-stealing function.

Oh yes @VirSyn , just tried with a sampled harp and I can only play 5 notes at a time (5 voices ~ 9% of CPU).
If I try to play a 6th note, no sound comes out.
I think I remember beeing able to play lots of notes before any issue occurs.

This sounds like something else, though. What is your setting for Voices on the Instrument / Level page? This is where you set the polyphony of the layer.
