  • This is good info to have. Seeing as how I don't have any guitars, I hope you'll post some music when you have time to make some presets.

  • TS isn't showing up for me in Audiobus In, Out, or FX. I did a hard restart on my ipad4 when I noticed this at first, but it's still happening. If I start up Audiobus, then start up ToneStack on its own (ie. not using AB)... then go back to AB, it will finally appear. Happening for anybody else?

  • No, for me it's behaving normally, listed in the app selection menus. iPad4, iOS 7.1.2

On my iPhone 4s with 7.1.2, I can see TS just fine in the AB list but lose all audio when It's loaded in the fx or output slots so no go there. I've tried everything to make it work.
Haven't had a chance to try it with my iPad 4 (7.1.2) yet.

I have heard of others having similar issues and I think the dev is aware.

    Frustrating!

  • Someone else just confirmed the inStudio dB drop and scratchiness - been reported to Yonac.

  • Got a solid hour plus with it, so some more impressions, but first a question:

If I get the motherload content pack, are those additional installs, or are they simply "unlocked" from files already installed? If it's the former, what's the file size of the full 1.0 app with all IAP's unlocked?

So, I did some additional snooping around with the settings and played all 6 base version amps some more. I take back what I said about the Fender amps, I actually like them quite a bit! The '59 Bassman has a nice full sound to it, unlike some of the other impersonations I've heard. The '65, which I'm calling a Twin Reverb (but some have called a Deluxe or Super Reverb, whatever) has a nice bright projection to it without losing that tight low end that good Fender amps also have. Pretty cool, also, that the amps have onboard effects like their real-life counterparts - so the Twin has Tremolo and also a pretty convincing spring reverb!

I thought the Hiwatt DR103 was great, and so was the Marshall Super Lead 100w. The channel switching on all these amps is well-implemented. The Vox AC15 was just a bit shrill to me, but perhaps what I'm really wanting is the AC30. I've heard it on demo videos where it sounds pretty good.

I'm really missing all the unlockable distortion pedals, as I'm not a huge fan of "The Gerbil". They do still generate a little more noise than you get in JamUp, but then again, JamUp seems to run things more quietly than the real life versions of those pedals, so perhaps we're just spoiled.

This is feeling like a great app overall, and $50 is a big bullet to bite, but feeling increasingly worth it.

  • No problems for me so with AudioBus.

Except, um, when I tried to have jamup in the input slot and tonestack in the FX slot at the same time. That's just too much to ask for.

I'm very curious how everybody feels about the quality of the cabs.there is a new IR pedal from Logidy that supposed to have very good convolution reverb IR cab simulations. Taking the output from my iPad into that could put me into the Kemper or axe FX territory. Of course, this might not be necessary if jam up or tone stack ups their game with their own cabs.

  • @StormJH1 The AppStore lists the size as 203mb. I have the mother. My ipad lists the size as 265mb total, App Size 217, and 48mb of Documents and Data. It says 'Downloading' when making a purchase, so, I guess it does haha.

It seems at this moment that, whether we choose one input source or multiple channel sources thru AudioBus, all the audio is mixed going in. I asked Yonac about this, and the reply was that they're looking into it. Which means, we may be able to choose multiple input sources in an upcoming update. Which would be amazing.

Thanks for all your info. I may need to buy myself a new guitar very soon.

That's great - if it's only 48mb of additional size, I can absolutely live with that. Looks like I'll be making that purchase sooner rather than later :)

For anyone that missed it, we had a little thread going with people's very-educated guesses as to which amps or effects the Yonac models are based after. I think about 75% of the effects are real-life, but they have some of their own that are either made-up or combinations of a variety of popular effects:

    http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/5026/tonestack-real-life-counterparts#Item_8

Feel free to add to that if you have identified others that we did not (or if you think the guesses are wrong). Their descriptions are fairly obvious as to what many of them are supposed to be.

I will note that I played on iPad2 this morning as opposed to iPhone 5s. The CPU did get up to 50% or higher on some occasions, but I never encountered glitching and even recorded a bit in AudioBus at 256 frames. 512 would probably be more reliable, but the latency was a little more noticeable. I consider all of this to be a very encouraging sign.

  • @ArcaneScreams I just got one of these. Web only, build to suit, takes awhile but a very nice guitar for the price

    http://deanzelinsky.com/collections/tagliare/products/tagliare-z-glide-custom

  • The TS tuner has too wide a tolerance for what it calls in tune for me. Used the support contact form to notify Yonac.

  • @TedBPhx Thanks. That's lovely. My Strat was Rosewood, so it's nice to see that option. I'll take a listen. They're Canadian? I had a Seagull acoustic, and I loved the way it sounded.

  • edited July 2014

@ArcaneScream They're in Chicago the parts are made in Indonesia and put together/setup to order in Chicago. I got the HSS pickups with split coil. I love my American Standard Strat, upgraded with better nut, tuners, trem '57 vintage pickups and the Dean compares very well with it. Slightly heavier, Good sustain, they use 1 meg pots so it is slightly darker than the Strat 250ks but it still gives that Strat squawk in single coil mode. The humbucker can shred. A well rounded versatile sound. Doesn't need any upgrades.

Those look nice. How did you learn about them?

  • On FB. Dean has been making guitars for decades. This is the third iteration of his company. The second version is still around. The board fired him and kept his name. Law suits abound.

  • I see my name was invoked earlier, but yes I have had no troubles using this app. Even in Audiobus. Whenever I get any new apps like amplitube, ampkit, jamup, I immediately run my vast and hordeful instrument collection through it. On an iPhone 4s no issues so far, using irig, hd, stomp, mic, iXZ, shure 57... The app works great.

There is so much in this thread, if anyone is having issues, can you mention the specific problem again?

  • Anybody having problems with tone stack within AB?
Scenario: plug ts in the fx slot put impaktor in the input play back, played for 5secs then nothing. Turn system out on, nothing. Out impaktor, in dm1, the same thing, seekbeats, same thing, playing initially, then muting. There's actual activity on input devices led etc so the sound is definitely being produced. I've played around with ts earlier this week with a guitar and it worked no problem. A bit weird.

Not impressed at all overall and I know others also who feel the same.
    Weak,thin tones.

It's a mixed bag, but personally I'm still very impressed. I think the FX are for the most part really good, far better than Jamup, but the amp sims are patchy.

The Fender sims lack warmth, but then again so do the ones in Jamup. I find I have to spend some time getting a decent tone in Tonestack, whereas in BIAS or Flying Haggis it's easier. Some of the other amp models work pretty well, the Orange one sounds huge, the 59 bassmaster sounds pretty good too. The Marshalls have more warmth, but I'm not really into the Marshall sound.

I compared the AC30 sim against BIAS and FH in another thread, sorry for double posting, and my scrappy playing:

You can hear that TS sounds a little thinner than the other two, but I still like it, and it's still fun to play.

  • It's also very important to fine-tune the input and output levels in the audio prefs at the top of the screen for your instrument. Input in particular can make a huge difference, set it too low and you will get thin sound.

    Care to elaborate?

@supadom - It did mute out on me once in the FX slot with iFretless Guitar in the input slot. Maybe 20 minutes into a session. Force stopping and restarting TS fixed it.

  • Is anyone using it on an iPad 2? Any stuttering? I'm not in the market for a new iPad for a few months.

  • edited July 2014

@richardyot - thanks for the samples! I have a working theory that people are programmed to favor bass-heavy or "fuller" tones because they start out as guitarists on small 8" or 10" combo amplifiers wishing they could play larger equipment.

But the reality is that this is modeling software, not an amplifier. The actual speaker or headphone set you use with your iPad is the same across all three apps - the only difference is in the programming and your EQ settings. If the same app (ToneStack) is capable of producing AC30 sounds that are "too thin", but also Marshall and Bassman tones that are either "warm" or "too muddy" depending on who you ask - then that tells me that the amp is capable of a full spectrum of low and high ranges, and it's simply the task of dialing it in. The Motherload package comes with a full army of 6- and 10-band equalizers in pedal and rack variety. If you have a preference for more bass, sure you can complain that it doesn't have it in the "out of the box" presets, but you could certainly make it sound close to how you want it.

I'm not going to lie if I felt that it had substandard sounds - I've got a fair amount invested into Agile AmpKit, and I'm unhappy with a lot of the amps in that software. But I think ToneStack sounds quite good, or at least the base package did (and that cost only $4.99).

@supanorton - Yes, I have the app on a 16GB iPad2, and one with usually less than 1.5GB of available HD space. While I have not put in large amounts of time yet, I did mention above that it performed just fine for me. I had no stuttering or glitching and even had it on 256 frames through AB. Of course, I fully expect that would change if I opened multiple other apps, but that's true of any guitar software, even Flying Haggis. It's probably ideal on a newer device, but it actually seems to struggle slightly less than JamUp in terms of navigating menus and general speed of use, etc.

I totally agree, I guess it just depends exactly on how the devellopers decided to voice the sim. Also, warmer doesn't necessarily mean more accurate. But all in all I really like ToneStack, but the Fender amps do need a bit of work before I'm happy with the tone, whereas BIAS anf FH take less effort for me to be happy with the sound - personal opinion though and nothing to do with the accuracy of the sim but rather my sonic preferences.

  • As with all the modeling software ever made.... What you put in and out makes a huge difference. For example if you plug a guitar in with poor settings, old strings, bad pickups... It will effect things. If your output is in bad headphones, idevice speakers, or bad amp settings, etc... This all matters. So I dot understand when people make descriptions about thin sound or other issues. The effects app is just part of the equation that goes with proper input and output. Idk...

Have you recorded anything so we can have a listen? How about sharing a patch you're using, and telling us a bit about your setup? Maybe someone can help you dial in a setting.

  • It supports state saving, so it should be interesting to see what others are coming up with. I'll try to contribute, but I'm trying to get a franchise up and running, so time is in tight supply.

  • If you don't mind my asking, what are you franchising?
