Did you notice the comment to disable 'AUX' (reverb processing) to lower cpu usage, and I assume, maximize battery life? Long press on preset to bring up preset menu at upper left of display, then at bottom of that menu you'll see an 'Enable' entry. Click that and then make sure the 'AUX' line is unchecked.
Yes, the controls take some getting used to. It would help a lot if the context menu for the pizzas would pop up if you hold inside the rectangles around the pizzas, instead of on the pizzas themselves, there would be enough space, I guess.
I built something in Drambo for probability with a note filter in front of a Chance-Module just for the kick and used a p-lock to always let the first kick through. For now I'm happy with that.
I didn't really have much problem with it. It does take some getting used to, and I expect there are some tweaks that could improve things.
One thing you might want to do is zoom the screen so the pizzas are larger. You can zoom in a whole lot using pinch/unpinch motions or via the sliders and +/-'s at bottom right of the pizza display area. Again, takes a bit of getting used to. Notice that those small sliders with +/- at bottom right are solely for zooming. Then there are other sliders on both axis that will help you navigate around the pizza area rather than zoom in/out.
@oddSTAR There's definitely some room for usability improvements, but let's give them some time to work out the kinks. @royor mentioned a "workaround is to be in velocity mode when you want to bring up the menu (right click) for a particular pizza.. this way you won’t change a slice because you tapped on it to access the menu.. not ideal, but it does work." For me, I've already gotten in the habit of tapping twice. I also mentioned the undo behavior, which does seem broken.
Yup loads as an Au in midi channel in AUM or audio channel. Can send notes, or play drums, so pretty versatile.
@eyalamir i was thinking when you do implement probability it would be cool to have a probability per circle, as well as per step. It could operate similar to the velocity changing. Just a thought.
Thanks I'll try that out. In my experience of other apps, battery drain tends to relate to screen redrawing, whereas high CPU relates more to audio processing, but I'll try it out anyways and see if it helps.
I noticed you can also disable the sampler, say if you are using as a midi sequencer, that might help a little too.
Yeah, I think that could certainly be done per circle, as well.
Yes, I think it's certainly possible to implement it like that. Should make it more tactile.
That's awesome! Please upload an example if you ever route it like that.
One of the cool things with Logic (on the desktop as well) is that they made it relatively easy to chain different 3rd party MIDI FX together, which... isn't straightforward on most non-Logic desktop hosts.
We might have a few things to contribute to that space as well in the future (not just related to Beat Scholar).

Cool, I would like that . Where I think, beat scholar is already nice and tactile, is when you're in slices-mode and drag up or down on the pizzas to change the number of slices, the only thing that can get a little bit in the way is, that it reacts maybe a bit too fast, if there were a little delay, before it reacts, it might happen less accidentally.
It would be cool to have a similar functionality for shifting the steps in a pizza, maybe, when you're in mirror-mode. With mode I mean, when the little rectangular buttons underneath the pizzas are active. I would like it, if all of the modes would have an extra function for dragging up and down.

Sure, I can post a screenshot later, when I'm on the iPad. Ableton is pretty good with stacking midiFX, too. And being able to save them in a rack to pull it out, whenever you want, is pretty cool (although third party is a bit trickier with extra tracks). I like that about Drambo, too. And there third party is no problem .

Ableton only allow that if you're using their MIDI FX or Max devices, unfortunately...
If you try to use external VSTs that process MIDI, you'll have to open a new track for each plugin, which is kind of annoying....
Yes, I've already edited my post. Although you can group all the tracks involved and save the group just like a rack.:)
Another shortcoming of Ableton in that respect is that you can't get multiple Midi channels out of one plugin, because it sums them all to one. I wish, they would change that.

I'm curious about that. I like Eon Arp very much by the way.
Hey there,
I'm Or Lubianiker, the other half of Modalics. Just thought I'd jump in and introduce myself as well as address some things.
First of all, thank you all for the awesome feedback and thought you've put in to how to improve our product.
Re. the above -

I really like this idea!
Re. gestures - We will release an in depth tutorial at some point, but for now I just want to let you know that you can zoom with pinch gestures and move across the pizza grid by dragging on screen with 3 fingers.
Is there a way to load samples without drag and drop? I’ve been trying on and off for a couple of days now and my iPad is lucky I haven’t yet caveman style smashed it to pieces 😂
I get it right maybe one time in twenty, the rest are a mix of nothing, opening Wavebox , or a few random pulsings or flashes and again nothing…
You can access the file system with the little folder icon
Ah so it does, doh!
Drag and drop is much less frustrating with Samplecrate btw. Well worth a look if you don’t have it 👍

Ooh that probably like velocity would be sweet. I'm really enjoying the app already and that would make it even better. The pizzas are such a neat idea.
Will the arrangement module (like on the desktop) be coming soon?
@eyalamir regarding probability , I would also welcome per “pizza” , but would request the addition of a default OFF HIT , so I could program a pizza long fill , but when probabilty didnt play the pizza it WOULD still play one hit to
keep the beat going .
Hope that’s explained clearly .
edit … further explanation = the problem with most drum programming apps for probability is that they work on individual hits which is no good for a group of hits ; drumming wise you’d either play a (group) fill or a single hit .
“Pizza” probability would give option to control a whole group of hits for a fill , but need single hit alternative when probability is OFF .
Is it just me or does the undo button undo every single thing you've done rather than just the last mistake you made?
Not just you!
Actually that’s what I was using, I can’t for the life of me get drag and drop to be anything but a recipe for rapid aging and heart palpitations…

@OrLub
I'm curious if you guys would have an interest in modifying things so (1) overall level of swing can be modified, in (2).a way that will avoid messing with triplets. I don't think there's any drum sequencer that allows this, at least none I've encountered that do it easily. And it's something that seems to me often desirable. I think there are a couple possible ways it could be done well by Beat Scholar.
I'll explain what I mean: I'm thinking of just a basic jazz beat, where in 4/4 swing is something applied to eighth note pairs but not to eighth note triplets. In Beat Scholar currently, swing for this is applied by choosing a "Swing Ref" of 1/4 note, and adjusting the level of swing. As I understand it, this adjusts things by increasing the overall duration of all slices in first half of a 1/4 note, and decreasing duration of all slices in second half, or vice versa. This is a neat effect, but it's not how you swing a jazz rhythm, where swing would only be applied to the 1/8 note pairs, not to 1/8 triplets.
Like I said, I don't know of any drum apps out there that make it easy to control real jazz swing, with control over swing level that affects only the pairs and not the triplets. I can think of two methods to do this that could be easily implemented in Beat Scholar, curious if you'd think about doing it: Method 1 would be to have a global option to toggle whether swing is applied to (1) all pizzas, or (2) only to pizzas that have an even number of slices. This would allow adjusting true jazz swing in fairly straightforward way, might have some strange (possibly interesting) effects if this "jazz swing" were toggled on in sequences where somebody has just randomly added lots of slices and isn't really concerned about maintaining jazz swing (i.e., doesn't care whether triplets are affected).
Method 2 would be for each "lane" to have its own option (flag) for whether it's affected by the global swing level. That is, by default apply swing as it's currently done to each lane, unless swing for that lane is toggled off (in which case the lane always has swing of 0% and it's the one where user would put triplets that they want to be unaffected by swing).
Maybe there's some other method that would work. Or maybe I'm not thinking things through. But I'm wondering if this sounds like a feature that might be worth adding.
any plans for this to go to iphone?
Is it possible to drag and drop multiple samples at once?
This is a topic that greatly interests me, and I'm pretty preoccupied to answer in full depth now, but as a general idea:
I totally agree with you regarding swing that would only be applied to certain musical values, to act like it works in actual notation, where the 1/8th notes are swung but the 16th notes are usually straight.
I'm not sure how to implement that feature just yet, but it's definitely something we'd consider adding if we find a good way to represent it in the UI.
However, two things you can look at today to achieve a 'close' effect:
1. If you long-press the swing slider, you can set the 'reference' of swing. In that mode, you can set which beat is the 'stable' part of the swing, and you can set that to be 1/8th notes, which would mean that 1/8th notes are totally straight but 1/16h notes are swung. You can also set 1/2 note swing-f which leads to other kinds of crazy.
For example, instead of setting 1/8th notes and messing with a swing slider, you can use a pizza divided to 5, or 7, or 13, and get way more accurate swing that will also be 'straight' in the exact position you want it to.
I know this isn't the same as having a swing slider, but in terms of getting precision on what you hear, that's the current way to do it with the highest control/accuracy.
Hope that helps.
Thanks. Yes, I would say it's not generally a problem in drum apps to set up a beat where you've got the equivalent to some level of swung eighths with other eighths that are straight, or eighth note triplets that have correct duration. But that's a static thing; once you try to vary the amount of swing using the app's actual swing feature it screws things up.
The cool thing with Beat Scholar is I can see how it could easily accommodate a simple setup where you could dynamically vary the amount of swing on the desired pairs (eighths, sixteenths, etc.) without affecting the triplets. The pizza slice beat visualization aids in conceiving how to do that, I think. (Makes me think, I think most notation apps can vary swing playback correctly b/c the notation includes a way to distinguish pairs from triplets, which most drum apps don't have. Just need good way for swing adjustment to distinguish between them. . . .)
Quite apart from the fact that I have an exceptionally low interest in registering for a trial, it doesn't work. Clicking on the trial button does nothing.
Cheers
Have just been through the manual for this. Initially confusing as hell because the manual is for the desktop version but once you grok the differences you can start to grasp it and see what an intelligent and unique app this is. Looking forward now to properly experimenting with it.
The keyboard shortcut of pressing and holding a number on your keyboard and then pressing a pizza to set the number of slices for me is working in standalone but not in auv3. Can someone please check if this numbers shortcut also doesn't work for them with the auv3?
