Delete - Hard Boot - Install

    Now it's loading ok..

On the iPad 4 (latest iOS) it was loading user patches with no problems since the first install.

  • Just trying out the presets and I am quite impressed by what I'm hearing.

  • Only managed to listen to most of the presets so far and I find a lot of them sound very similar, but that's not the fault of the synth engine, as a few patches show it's clearly very versatile. Must get my head around the modular routing methodology, that's the key to interesting and novel sounds.

  • There is a bug with random dice: don't works with 'INIT' patch :-(

  • Well, I got this one too.

I do miss real PWM, Phasemodulating Saw-waves just doesn't sound the same.

Precise editing of values is tricky (why can't we just type in numbers?), and the controls are very small and fiddly on iPad Mini, it's a nightmare to try and pinpoint the different cells in the arpeggiator or editing the multi-stage envelopes, and various other UI bugs.

Not being able to play the onscreen keyboard while editing in 'pop-up windows' feels frustrating.

Guess these 'bugs' will be sorted out over time but It does sound nice but not as 'unique' as the other Virsyn Synths...

  • Now loading my saved patched but needed a reboot first - strange.

  • @Samu

I have the same problem yesterday ...but you can go on MOD page and you have the same ENV and LFO without popover....

Modulation in Tera is by moving up and down the keys. If you have the "Hold" setting on, Tera remembers the modulation. This creates some wild sounds if you create chords one note at a time and set one or several to modulate. Works in arps.

  • Is this synth showing up in Audiobus !,!

  • Yes, shows as Tera Synth in AB but as Addictive in StepPoly

  • What am I missing?

  • Question for experts: What are the main differences (in a musical way) with Micro Tera.

    Thanks.

Only difference I can see is you are on AB 2.1.3 and mine is 2.1.4

  • I am on 2.1.4 using iPad Air and Tera synth shows up in AB but says "port unavailable". Still it recorded into AudioShare but didn't sound right. I've used it through IAA into Cubasis though which worked fine.

Thanks, I find the UI in Terra to be a little fiddly and inconsistent.

Terra is pretty powerful but not the easiest synth to navigate around and is in some ways a little limited and due to the semi-modular nature at least regarding modulation routings, a full modulation matrix would be a welcome addition letting the user combine and mix sources at will :)

And well, fullscreen editing of multi-stage envelopes in all Virsyn apps would be a warmly welcomed addition, and i kinda like what Retronyms has done with the 'Precision Knobs' in iMPC Pro and TableTop, would come in handy everywhere where precise fiddling is needed, either that or numerical keyboard input :)

  • @Trueyorky you must click on little 'I' button in AB to select output of TERA

  • Definitely interested in this one based on the history of the developer and their penchant for making lightweight, low-profile synths that function with everything. This one sounds like it may have a few early bugs, however.

I don't recall the knobs in other VirSyn apps being too bad, but that is a big issue that differs from app to app. iMPC Pro's precision knobs are cool looking and nice to control, but IIRC, you can use other buttons on the screen when you are adjusting something like pitch, which makes it a little annoying. The whole screen shades out and all you can touch is the knob.

@fjcblanco - TERA contains many elements common with other synths - multiple oscillators, filters, even ring mod, etc. However, what sets it apart in my mind - not as "the best" but as another very good and distinct item in the aural palette on the iPad - are several things:

1.) The modularity - as it is so designated - albeit without wires. Let's call it the routing.

    2.) The formant module

    3.) The waveguide module

    4.) The divided suboscillator.

5.) The custom waveform for the oscillators (although other synths have that too in some fashion, like Z3TA+ - and I do find Virsyn's "draw the partial's" implementation less intuitive, but one can get used to it.)

Together these plus the common elements give it the ability to produce a nice suite of sounds that are different than a number of other synths - esp. the waveguide module.

  • Once you understand how partials work, the draw partial's implementation gives you a lot of power to shape how the wave sounds. That's actually one of the things I really appreciate about their apps.

I'm finding the routing to be more of pain than Thor's implementation.

I thought this synth (which I like a lot) was going to have physical modelling. Did I dream that? Or am I thinking of another synth.

  • @cian Physical Modeling module in Tera is the 'Waveguide':

Digital waveguide synthesis is the synthesis of audio using a digital waveguide. Digital waveguides are efficient computational models for physical media through which acoustic waves propagate. For this reason, digital waveguides constitute a major part of most modern physical modeling synthesizers.

  • @Sinapsya thanks, the little i worked a treat.

  • After a little bit of learning curve, I'm finding Tera to be extremely intuitive, easy to navigate and program, and capable of a gigantic palette of sounds. And I've barely scratched the surface. I love it. An easier way to export/share presets would be nice. I'm guessing you can do it via iTunes now.

  • Oh thanks Sinapsya. My experiments with physical modelling have been limited to karpluck and delay lines. This is very exciting...

  • Sure @cian - It's just that there is no scale to work with in the window and it's small. I have a number of other Virsyn apps that have the similar partials view. Just be nice to have a way to specify the math explicitly - or at least edit the drawing more accurately or something :-) I am not a big fan of Thor's routing either - gets in the way of workflow for me...

That's good to hear! And not unexpected from virSyn.

This should run mostly fine on an iPad2, right? I run Addictive and microTERA without problems, but the modular stuff can be more stressful on the CPU. File size is only 10+ MB, but that isn't always the best indicator of how much an app will demand memory.

I have a doubt. Why most analog modelling synths on iOS are not able to reproduce the normal behavior of portamento when in mono-legato mode? Most vintage monosynths had portamento always enabled, not fingered or legato, with no retriggering of the envelopes. With most iOs synths, we just have to choose - Traditional portamento in which you can play legato or not and the effect will work anyway but the envelopes will always retrigger, and "fingered or legato mode" where the envelopes won't retrigger but the portamento effect will work only if you play legato. This is wrong. I can remember only two apps in which this works ok - iMS-20 and Modular (not even iMini!). Gonna check Tera today for this, as I've noticed that there are Poly/Mono/Legato and Fingered buttons in the Keyboard Section AND Key/Key Reset/Key Once selection in the Envelope modules...

@MusicInclusive "Just be nice to have a way to specify the math explicitly [for partials]"

Oh totally. I don't find Thor ideal, but at least I can see the connections in a single place.

  • I see that Animoog is on sale for $19.99 the same day TERA is released for $9.99. Can anyone tell me how the two compare, since they are both modular? A lot of people rave about the sound quality of Animoog, but their apps are poorly supported (iPhone version still stuck without AudioBus), and I rely more on presets for modular synths. I play with them a little in apps like SunVox and Jasuto, but those aren't quite the same thing.

Heavily leaning on buying TERA anyway, which has tons of presets. But Animoog has been sitting on my wishlist for some time, and I'm not sure I actually would like it.

I am on iPad2 with the latest version of iOS7.

  • @StormJH1 Animoog still the best iOS Synth for me....best sound synthesis (unique) and best expression playability (aftertouch keyboard)...

iPhone version is a separate app...

But I like very much the power of the lead and pad of Tera Synth too :-)
