Ableton Note for iOS

  • I never really got on with Note on the iPad, but last week I started using it on the iPhone, and it’s much better. Somehow it just works on the smaller screen, held in both hands. Plus it’s easy to use on the metro

FWIW, Ableton just released the first RC for Note 1.3 into the Testflight Beta, so I guess we're getting close to an official 1.3 release! This will be a big one, with significant improvements to MIDI editing, and the long-awaited ability to start with an empty pattern and program notes in. This may appeal to folks who didn't jibe with the MIDI capture workflow that has been the primary note input method. They've made a bunch of other changes to MIDI editing to make it more powerful and flexible, though to be honest it's still a long way from the best/most intuitive piano roll editor on iOS.

They're also adding "16 pitches" support to drum racks, similar to Ableton Move, so that's a significant upgrade.

Still no MIDI import, and no export short of moving a project to Live and exporting MIDI there. No new instruments or effects that I'm aware of, but there are now default effects on the master channel.

Well I can remember just a few years ago. we did not have ‘MIDI Record’ on iOS.. Maybe MIDI Import is difficult for some developers..
    would be nice..

For MIDI import, I suspect that's just not a use case Ableton currently cares about for Note. I'd love to be able to drop a MIDI clip on a clip cell, but I am very much not holding my breath.

I would think that Note is a gateway to Ableton Live.. It can influence an upgrade to Live 12 here.. Still sitting on 11..

Yes, I'm sure that's the idea. That's why I think they'll keep Note pretty limited, so people will be motivated to move projects into Live for finishing. It helped motivate me to buy Live 12, so well done Ableton I guess

    I made a web midi exporter https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/64186/export-midi-from-ableton-note#latest

  • Ableton has released Note version 1.3. This release includes major enhancements to MIDI editing including the ability to program notes into an empty clip. It also includes 16 pitches mode for drum rack instruments and a whole raft of UI and workflow improvements. Release notes are here: https://www.ableton.com/en/release-notes/note/

IMO this is a major upgrade, and if you've set aside note because you didn't get along with the capture-based workflow, you may want to give it another look now. I've been on the public beta for a while and the new features are great.

  • I loved Note until this update and still do, although I haven't been able to find the function to nudge
notes left and right... I hope it's not gone!!

long press on a note and the operations controls should pop up (among others under different tabs).

OMG thank you! The circle is now complete!

I am not great at putting tracks together, but Note gives me the illusion that I can do it :)

I know what you mean! Logic is the only place I’ve “finished” a track, but Note lets me put together a whole bunch of clips quickly.

  • In having a strange behavior with longer samples in drum rack with the new pitches function.
when i trigger one pitch then press another when im still pressing the first, it wont trigger the sample. I know its not polyphonic. But it should just choke the first pad.
    Can anyone reproduce?

  • 1.4b1 just dropped in Testflight. So far it's just a UI tweak and the addition of the Auto Filter effect, but from what I've seen these point releases pick up features as they proceed through beta.

  • I received an email this morning indicating that there was a new version, 1.5, available for beta testing and the new feature it brings? Fucking IAP!! It will extend the functionality of the Drift instrument. No, beta testers don’t pay for the IAP. I’m pretty pissed about this. Note is a sketchbook for Live! Other than that it is very limited as an app in the iOS ecosystem. Proper stems can’t even be exported from it. Does Ableton really think people are going to buy an IAP for something that the majority of users have access to in Live!? I have 12, the full suite, a Push 2, Note and a Move and love them all but if greedcreep is going to be the norm from Ableton, I won’t be spending any more money on them.

Counterpoint: you don’t have to buy the IAP if you’re happy using Drift presets. A lot of users (myself included) have asked for deeper editing capabilities, and I don’t see any issues with Ableton putting a completely optional feature behind an IAP to help fund future development. I’m glad they’re not going the subscription route with it!

If you already have access to Drift via Live and want to expand your Note library for free, you can use the (admittedly janky) preset creation method outlined at https://help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/articles/15616909965596-Presets-on-Move-and-Note

  • This sounds great to me. I can’t wait to dig into drift from this angle. I wonder what this means for the Move?

The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • It's going to be a £3.99 IAP that opens up full functionality for the Drift instrument. I don't see the problem.

  • I don’t understand the accusation of greed if a developer provides an opportunity to purchase non-core-functionality add-ons. Adding functionality is an expense whether one is a one-person operation or a larger operation.

One way that companies stay in business is making sure they cover the costs of their offerings so that they can pay the people that do the work.

If you don’t buy the IAP, you won’t be any worse off than you were.

IAP sales like that also help a company (tiny or larger) whether the product users will pay for expensive functionality they SAY they will pay for.

Even if a company is large compared to a one person company, it still costs many to develop software and add features.

  • Yeah, I’m trying to be empathetic — I totally understand IAP fatigue, and even outside of our phones, it feels like everyone is trying to squeeze us for a few extra dollars.

But this is a relatively inexpensive, completely optional one-time purchase that supports one of the few companies that is still actively resisting investor and private equity control. I’m not losing any sleep over it.

Plus, as of right now, it’s only available in the public beta, which means no one can pay for it even if they want to. There’s still time to tell Ableton why you think it should be free.

(Also, in Canada, Note is 24th on the iPhone All Paid Apps chart and 65th on the iPad Paid Music Apps chart. It doesn’t even rank on the iPad All Paid Apps chart. I don’t have any insight into how that translates into actual money, I don’t know how it’s selling globally, and I acknowledge that Canada is a small market. But I don’t think they’re making “Angry Birds ca. 2013” money off of this app.)

  • @offbrands Absolutely agree and eloquently stated.

Plus for me, personally, lacking an upgrade to a Push 3, I’m balls deep in the ecosystem. I already own the full version of Drift! If this IAP thing goes live (haha) then I should have a way to get the functionality without having to buy the full instrument again. Unless…

Unless there will be other IAPs in the future and at some point a subscription will be required to operate Mobile Live! But no, nothing like that could ever happen.

Best thing that I’ve read in these comments is that this IS a beta. Let them know how I feel. 👍

Few thoughts on the current conversation:

1: Characterizing Ableton as some giant corporate behemoth is absurd. AFAIK Ableton has about 800 employees, which, yeah, sounds like a lot if you're a 1-2 person app shop, but which is nothing compared to Apple or even Avid. I get the impression that the Note team in particular is relatively tiny. In the modern software world, Ableton could still be considered a "startup".

2: Note's base cost is $9 US, currently on sale for $5 US, which is ridiculous value for money.

3: The IAP in beta provides functionality that people have been clamoring for almost since 1.0 shipped, and which frankly I wasn't ever expecting to see in the app. For $4 US.

4: In my opinion, Ableton right now is coming up with great innovations in the music production software and hardware vertical integration space, and building the Note/Move ecosystem is a big part of it. Note turned me in to an Ableton user, and as of a few days ago a Move owner. Just considering the Note app itself, it has gained impressive capabilities since it shipped in 10/22. And this is the first feature update that won't be free of charge. For that matter, Move is much more capable than it was when it first shipped, less than a year ago.

4.5: Oh, and as an iOS music app user, I appreciate the Ableton Live is one of very few desktop DAWs that will load an AUv3. If you want to run a Bram Bos or Iceworks plugin in your desktop DAW, don't try it in Bitwig or Cubase!

5: As others have noted, if you're feeling outraged at the prospect of paying $4 for an IAP, you don't have to buy it. You can continue to use Note as you do today. If you're outraged that a corporation is charging money for a product, well, I don't know what to tell you. I'm not aware that Ableton was ever a non-profit or a charitable foundation. You may want to reevaluate expectations.

Every time Ableton ships an update to Note, I get more excited to see where it goes next. They will absolutely get my $4.

Edit: grammatical errors. Oh, and on their website Ableton says they're "over 350 employees". So potentially a lot less than 800.

I'll cop to feeling a twinge of "hey, I'm a Suite owner, I should get this for free", but I think current App Store rules make this an impracticality.

I’m a big fan of Live, it’s been my main desktop DAW for a long time now, but I was surprised they didn’t throw in a copy of Note for Live Suite owners. I’ve spent over a grand on it over the years. Bit stingy, to be fair.

Fair, but again, I think app store rules have historically prevented this. I mean, I think you should definitely get a free copy of Note if you buy a Move, but I don't think they're allowed to do that by Apple (that is, they can't give away an otherwise paid-for App Store app in consideration for a purchase made outside of the App Store). The current situation is more about Apple's greed than Ableton's, I think.

I’m not sure that’s the case:

    “ Offer Codes:
Apple provides a mechanism for developers to generate and distribute offer codes, which can be used to provide discounts or free access to in-app purchases, including subscriptions.
    Redemption Outside the App:
These offer codes can be redeemed by users outside of the app itself, such as through a link or a code provided by the developer. “

You might know more than I do on this (I just did a quick search), and I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a clause somewhere preventing it happening.

I'm pretty sure the App Store Ts and Cs have prevented developers from selling offer codes or providing them in exchange for another purchase. Otherwise it'd be an easy method to circumvent the App Store/IAP commission. I've seen developers use offer codes for promotional giveaways and for providing apps to reviewers, but not for bundling purchases. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
