Tempted to get Ableton Live now.. Logic Pro for iPad is giving me a headache but I suppose I’ll stick with it because I don’t own a desk/laptop at all right now . Just M1 iPad Pro. But I’m tempted , no doubt about it .

I love it. I’ve got Logic and Maschine on my laptop as well, but Live is my go-to DAW. Since getting a faster laptop I’ve hardly touched the ipad for music making.

Ouch!! Sting of truth there. Is it really true though that you can easily use you iPad Auv3 apps inside of Ableton Live ?

  • @drez What’s the reception like when you set up your Push at the coffee shop? From staff and other customers?

If they’re compatible, yes, the ones I use in Live are:

Apesoft since the recent update (Stria, iPulsaret, iDensity)
    King of FM,
Sunrizer (Zeeon and Dagger need layout fixes)
    Salome (excellent), Solderbox
    Burns Audio apps
Spacecraft (though I also have the VST)
Koala (currently having a blast with this in Live)
    DM10
    Rings FX, Wavecloud
    Rymdigare, Tardigrain
Various Icegear synths, and FX (picked up the remaining 2 in the sale this week)
    Glitchscaper, Spacefields
    Model 15
    Fractal bits, flow, waves
    Elasticmelody
Patterning 3 (great for live jamming)
    Riffler Flow
    PaulXStretch
    Tera Pro
    Taurus

These are just the ones currently loaded up.

Generally, most of the instruments and fx I use in Live are either built-in, or iOS compatible, though I do have a bit of a Max4Live habit!

The only downside with Live vs Logic, is it doesn’t support MIDI AU FX, so I can’s use any of my iOS sequencers, even if they’re Mac compatible. However, these do work in Logic.

I upgraded to a 13” M2 Air last year, and feel a bit guilty for abandoning it, but AUM is still excellent for jamming, so I will get back to it - but Live on a laptop is just too much fun!

  • Hm. Wasn’t PaulXStretch freely available for Mac long before iPads…? Like, does it count in that way?

  • Btw, even if they were a non-profit -- they would still need to recoup the cost of the development. > @offbrands said:

The algorithm has been around for a while. I don’t know the direct origins of who has made apps with that algorithm available for what platforms.

So I think it’s fair to mention specifically PaulXStretch here. It’s really well done. Would be curious if you recall which ones you mean

PaulXStretch was long available on other platforms before iOS. It is open source. The original license was not iOS-compatible because of how the App Store works. Then Sonosauraus got permission via an alternative license to port it to iOS.

I get asked about it by the patrons all the time. Little kids love it. I put drum kits on and show them how it works so they can bang around on it. Put on big MPE pad sounds for them to move their fingers around with. It's cool to see their eye's light up. Its funny lots of people think its a game of some sort 😂

I've talked with a few of the staff too. The owner has a music background so we've sat and talked through it before. People kind of glaze over when you talk about an isomorphic keyboard layout and how that works until i say "it's similar to how a guitar fretboard is" and that helps a bit. But then when you play like a baseline or som elec piano patches they start to see it.

Definitely a conversation starter and honestly, it's not really any bigger than a laptop space wise. Usually i'm sitting somewhere not near an outlet so i plug it into my power bank, so its very understated.

I’m sorry I’m not sure what you’re referring to here, I don’t think anything was mentioned about non or for profit?

Oops that was left over from a response I chose not to send in reply to an earlier post ascribing greed to Ableton for wanting to recoup some of the expense of adding new features. I hadn’t noticed that old text was still there when I replied with the info about PaulXStretch

On the other hand, Apple is offering consumers the M4 Mac Mini, probably the most powerful computer (for the price) available today. 🤔

No, just trying to counter the endless “Big corporation bad for charging for stuff” this thread has been about.

Back to Note - a few bucks for a solid update is supposed to be ripping people off?
Ableton have continually added great functionality for free to Move over the past 6 months…

So the reality is that most companies both give and take…

So yeah, i'm debating on replacing that damn 5590x with a newer Mac, but can't decide if I want to replace my MacBook or just buy a Mac Studio instead maybe next year. The one thing right now that is killing me about windows is that you can't have multiple sound cards as ASIO devices like i can do on a Mac with Coreaudio. That is HUGE issue for me with a bunch of devices.

I found my M1 Mini (16/512) struggled a bit with some VST’s in Live (Spacecraft and Fors Tela, for example), might have been better with more RAM.

Upgraded last year to a 14” MBP M4 Pro 24/512, and it’s a total beast - I can throw anything into Live and it doesn’t break a sweat. Totally recommended. I even run Logic and Live together sometimes, utilising Logic’s MIDI AU FX support, copying and pasting between the two.

Started watching the Push 3 videos again…it’s my birthday in a few weeks, maybe I should treat myself…

    @oldsynthguy : Standalone?

It’d be the connected version, but the price will probably stop me again!

One of the reasons I’m doing so much more in Live now, is down to the portability of the new laptop. At 14”, it’s not that much bigger than my iPad, so I can grab a few minutes here and there on the couch, in between work and life stuff. Because the M4 Pro is so fast, I can reload a project in a couple of seconds and carry on where I left off, and am able to use MIDI tracks more now.

Previously, I was running live on my desktop M1 Mini, which felt a bit like work as it shared space with the day-job stuff.

My reservation with a connected Push 3, is that it’d end up unused like my recent Launchkey Mk4 purchase - as it’d mean going back to the desk. Rather than hook up a MIDI controller, I’ve been playing synths via the laptop keys.

The standalone would solve the portability issue, but price and lack of support for some of my plugins puts it out of reach for now…but the lure of MPE is still pulling me towards the connected version…maybe a Black Friday sale…

  • Drift is now available

Drift in Ableton Live is MPE compatible. I'm curious: is the version of Drift (and the other synths) inside Ableton Note MPE compatible? Can you tweak things like what parameter MPE cc74 will modulate? Can you adjust per note envelope attack via MPE pressure and/or cc74? Looked at Ableton Note manual, didn't see any mention of MPE, so I'd love to know whether it has MPE at all, and how robust the implementation is.

Edit: hmm, Note doesn't even support pitch bend, strangely, so I guess it is definitely not in any way mpe compatible after all

I don't think so, there's no way to assign it. Maybe eventually, I'd sure like that.

  • Hopefully on the way at some point. Drift is a great synth any road. Ableton have upped their game with the in house instruments lately.
