I think the following comments go beyond your simple interpretation:

"doesn’t mean I won’t call him out when he does some dumb sh!t"

"This could be a whole video series like "why i don't want to review spoons... or trucks.." etc."

"I don’t think much of his ‘mobile’ credentials anyway. In all his videos his gear is just parked on his desk. I don’t think he takes it anywhere ever, so where’s the mobility?"

"He should have ended the video after his first statement…“I don’t want to waste anyone’s time.”"

Etc. Bit catty, bit personal? You don't like his video? Make your own.

Er, please don't lump my comment in with that. It wasn't at all catty or personal. It was intended as satire pointing out the irony of his opening statement in his video which said nothing and wasted everyone's time.

Actually, it really bugs me that I've just gone to all the trouble and time to write this post and check the thread

Yep, bugs me too! (now that was catty... but meant in jest 🙃)

  • lets get some facts straight , ableton sucks!! I mean skrillex uses it, and who even likes that guy anymore?!?! the only people who use ableton are bedroom dubstep producers, i cant think of a single other demographic of users.

the whole "warping" thing and "sampling" or whatever that it offers is just lazy music making.

their large amount of pretty decent quality, built in FX are terrible, and the fact that you can use vsts, and AUv instruments is just too much! what happened to the good ole days of a four track tape machine and a shitty sm58?!

i could go on and on, considering i use ableton all day every day, and i have many thing to say about how terrible it is, including their new stupid app that doesnt even have a built in tape machine, but ill leave it at this.

i bought the app anyways, just so i could leave a negative review, in hopes that ableton will see it and just give up already.

It’s definitely an elegant interface and includes some very impressive sample kits. In the past I’d instantly buy new apps like this, no question — but I already have too many standalone samplers that cover the same bases — some with even more functionality. (Flip Sampler) Sadly, those sandboxed apps mostly go unused since they lack the connectivity of gems like Koala.

Obviously yes I use koala more due to connectivity but I still adore Flip for its simplicity and I still use a lot of stand alone apps just for fun.

I felt like it was another crapshoot but I finally gave in and purchased Note. Next thing I know, I have 10+ projects I’ve started in the last few days and I keep coming back to try new ideas!

I stand corrected — the brilliant simplicity of Note’s interface really makes it something special. It’s why Ampify Groovebox is one of the only other standalone apps I still use, there’s no clumsy hurdles in the way of getting ideas down—and no manuals needed to quickly master the app.

I thought Note’s lack of piano roll editing or even note resize would slow me down, but the live visual overdub system and quickness of creating new loop points makes up for it. Gadget’s loop point system is often fiddly to use and often doesn’t register on first swipe, where Note is just tap tap and you’re off to the races. Love it!

…that the forum improves in the way we treat each other.

I don’t think this forum is too bad, most of the time, certainly compared to other places <3

  • It's usually just a few bad apples who like to complain about everything, and it's easy enough to hide posts from them.

I don't see any problem with people calling out posts that are clearly made to drive traffic onto a YouTube channel and nothing else, if it discourages other similar posts I'm all for it, I know you can just scroll on past and that's your prerogative if you wish to do so but that doesn't mean you can curtail other folks who find it a bit irksome..

Agreed it's gotten a bit personal here and there which is regrettable and there's really no need for it..

Nice tip, thanks! I do notice it's frequently the same few accounts that turn up when a thread is going south. Overall this forum is a really positive, helpful place; it's nice to know such spaces still exist on the internet.

  • I’m going to need somebody to review this non-review and let me know how I should feeeeel lol

Shout out to Big Haq he’s a cool dude even with his non reviews haha.

YouTubing is a crazy thing man once you get in there you got to keep that content going lol, it can be a double Edge.

I gave up watching after a couple of minutes, when it was clear that the video was his listing of features Note would need to appeal to someone focused on mobile production.

  • Btw, I think it is totally legit to not be interested in Notes. I am not saying it is for everyone or beyond critique.

I’m enjoying this thread. A little discrepancy is always fun.
What baffles me about all the folk defending Ableton Note is that, once again, it looks like those big companies that don’t really need it (Ableton, Apple…), are the ones most belligerently defended.
You don’t see this kind of “I stand behind you” with one-person projects, kind of intriguing… Much harsher comments and complaining are poured over independent devs and one wonders if we shouldn’t be defending them more than the likes of Ableton or Apple.
    Just saying.

Its not so much as defending the company as much as it seems like some people are mad at their toaster for not being able to make coffee. While I understand some people not liking it, it doesn't mean Note is a bad app, its just not for them, partly because it doesn't fit their workflow and partly because they weren't exactly the user Ableton was going for. But I will say this in Ableton's behalf or rather in defense of them, they've contributed greatly to the iOS/Ipad community when they gave us Ableton Link, for free. Many of us use it daily.

  • Also, it's a six dollar app, not much to complain about, especially after actually using it.

Totally agree… and in addition Ableton Note is entering a mature (ish) market, so coming up with a limited v1 concept isn’t a bad idea, and just maybe it will grow to become more useful for us iOS diehards?

    Indeed.

I think a lot of people see it’s made by Ableton and think it has to be some kind of DAW for iOS. The limitations are there intentionally.

He should have ended the video after his first statement…

    “I don’t want to waste anyone’s time.”

    🤣

I ended up watching it. Quickly gave me just a tad more motivation to want to get it now xD

This isn't really aimed at the video or Jake but in regards to reactions about apps and the like.

After watching Abletons walkthrough for Note, I was thinking 'Eh, too limited. I can already do what it does with what I got' with calm apathy about it.
That means I did not have to have strong feelings about it like it either has to be the next coming of God or a useless pos.

Because it's opaque what they're doing, what it's for and it's the kind of mentality I support for devices.
I'm on the 'it doesn't need to be a desktop app' side when it comes to ipads.
I like a mobile app that will hone in on the strengths of what ipad has to offer instead of trying to make their desktop equivalent. Complementary, convenient, laterally thought out is the idea (too bad I loathe adobe and that Serifs UX sucks).

I get the excitement of an app coming out and its from a developer you love but if you do love what they do you then it seems like you'd get their philosophy. It seems shortsighted to request something from a developer that isn't consistent with their design / aesthetic / purpose. (I'm thinking more along the lines of when I was on ableton forums ages ago and there'd be requests for non-ableton things like skeuomorphic design)

This kneejerk reaction that it's ableton so it has to be the next holy innovative grail of mobile daws and it's like, chill.
I respect what they've done even when my interest is 'eh'.

But after reading from those with low to moderate expectations being surprised, I'll probably spring for it when I get bored enough and expect to end up feeling similarly more enthused about it.

I really like that they're using the same instruments so you get a 1:1 translation. I remember being impressed at how much they upped their instruments game somewhere between 9 to now even though I still barely try them out.
So, I'll get newly introduced to a number of instruments I've already had for years :p

I'm very happy with their expansion of effects and making some of the M4L ones official. Keep doing that!

I would hope they come up with some some feature to fill gaps, specialize more, exploit possibly underrated/underused instruments/fx like loosely 'porting' some M4L devices like spectral stuff or the Inspired by Nature devices (but not actually incorporating max for live because that just doesn't seem realistic at this point) for more unique instruments and effects.
Though first and foremost, keep adding a bunch more of those already available native instruments (<-- I've been trying to avoid writing that lol) and fx. From the packs, too!

The main request right now is wanting to be able to choose scale and key per clip instead of the whole session and yes, I'll make that request.

Anyway, so yeah, it doesn't do what it isn't supposed to do lol. Stop the presses /bourgeois lady faint

Exactly mate. I like it for what it is...a musical sketchpad. Do I wish for some added bells and whistles in future updates? Of course. But for now, it's more akin to Figure and Auxy - a musical sketchpad. Plus for desktop users like @mistercharlie , this would be a godsend for generating new ideas that can be directly ported over into Live. Maybe I missed any post he made in this thread amongst the dross, but I am very curious to read his opinion of the app.

    Yes 🙌

I gotta say I completely agree with Jakob and the point he is making. All he is really saying is that at least it should have stem export. As it is, it’s more of a tool for Ableton Live, which is fine. Sort of like Logic Remote app. Not having minimal export functionality seems like an intentional decision to limit it to be a desktop app companion. As such, it makes no sense to review.
