Fave music theory apps
Sorry that this isn't really AB related, but I thought with the broad spectrum of people on this forum, someone could advise on what music theory apps they've used and like.
Comments
What would you say is your current level of theory understanding, and what are you most keen to learn? Do you play an instrument? Do you use mainly an iphone or ipad?
I'll list a few in a moment.
I like these..
It has great sections and detailed info about many topics before giving you interactive quizes on a choice of instrument displays. This is my favourite
This is more visual but very detailed and well done.
This is less theory, but has comprehensive scales and chord info for a piano keyboard. I really like this.
Any questions...I'll be happy to help.
Oh...I guess you've checked out Audanika's Harmony blog? http://harmonytheory.audanika.com/
This also by the makers of Tenuto may be more like what you're after?
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/theory-lessons/id493157418?mt=8
Octavian looks great .. Nice find!
Thanks @SpookyZoo. I mainly use an iPad, but I also have an iPhone. My current level is probably low intermediate. I have a decent understanding of scales, modes, keys, but I'm hoping to get a better understanding of how to put it all together. Particularly how to determine which scales would work within chord progressions. I play the guitar and trying to pick up keys.
Octavian is pretty cool. It has a dictionary setting where you can enter a chord on the keyboard and will list a whole load of scales that include that chord. It has other cool stuff too. Although it won't explain to you why something would fit.
Also pretty cool but basic is SUGGESTER. https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/suggester-chord-progression/id504740787?mt=8
You can try it for free...I think it's £2.99 for full upgrade ($4.99) It's mainly text, but it DOES do what you're asking. Enter a scale say F Dorian, and it will list all available chords, including 7ths etc.....it IS a little limited in number of chords...but hey...you can check it out for free now.
Maybe Guitar Toolkit could help too?
I'll have another think.
This came to mind....it's not an app, it's a great 4 part documentary called "How Music Works"
1 - Melody
2 - Rhythm
3 - Harmony
4 - Bass
You can watch all these free on youtube. Each part is 45 mins long but split into 5 x 9 minute videos.
It really is interesting and you can pick up some great info and tips.
Melody - part 1 video is here, enjoy!
(If I remember rightly, the first part is a little odd...but stick with it. I really recommend the Harmony episode)
Note....if you are gonna watch the Harmony episode, part 5 is missing from youtube.
I just found part 5 playable here.... http://createmusic.wordpress.com/2013/01/18/how-music-works-3-harmony-part-5/
Thanks for all the tips @SpookyZoo. I'll be busy for a while! I've downloaded the apps and started looking at those, and checked the YT video...the first one in the series. Interesting stuff!
cool...which apps did you go for?
Got them all. Small investment if they help, and it looks like they will. Thanks again.
I guess I'm gonna leave a link here as well: http://harmonytheory.audanika.com
@funjunkie27 excellent good luck and have fun with it.
@Sebastian I also posted a link to your cool blog above.
Thought it might be useful to throw out another app that I found " Mapping Tonal Harmony."
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mapping-tonal-harmony-pro/id566767002?mt=8
haha I love that app. I was gonna mention it but thought it may be a bit specialist.
If anybody likes the look of it....buy it soon...apparently the introductory price of ($4.99) will be increasing imminently.
Have you ever used any of the worksheets that accompany it?
They are physical books with 100+ pages. I did look at buying a couple (there are 7) but shipping them to me in the UK posed a couple of things...cost, shipping time.
The Developer is very cool, and open to suggestions. He also has done some great videos for the app.
He saw the issues I was having, and kindly sent me one of the books in PDF format.
Each book has approx 28 pages introduction to the map and some theory. The majority of the book is exercise templates for you to fill in for each key. So there are 4 pages for each key ( 2 for enharmonic, so 4 pages x 17 keys....C, C#, Db, D etc...)
Some example pages here... http://mdecks.com/mthwhlp.html
I would definitely recommend getting at least one, for the 28 page introduction and to see if it is something you would find beneficial.
Workbook 1 has 168 pages, thats an extra 68 (4x17) as this edition also covers the minor keys.
Hope this helps.
I have been holding off, since I haven't heard anything on their usefulness, but I think I will try the first one to see what it's like.
Just thought of a few other apps you may like.
These 2 are both just $0.99 and allow you to hear quickly how....
chords sound together in a progression - The Chord Monster https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/chord-monster/id599446082?mt=8
Harmonized chords in all scales - iHarmony
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/iharmony/id292413210?mt=8
This app is GREAT!! for guitarists... iRealB....a little pricier, but it is great for practice, backing tracks...it's quite Jazzy. There are some excellent in app purchases, like real time chord position display, other sound packs etc. Check out vids on youtube
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/ireal-b-music-book-play-along/id298206806?mt=8
and the excellent CHORDBOT
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/id394754767
I could only get UK itunes links for those last 2.
Thanks again @SpookyZoo. I have all except the Chord Monster. Going to check that one out. I love Chordbot!
Tonal Harmony pro. It's a bit complex, but anyone who's wanted to almost the entirely of harmonic relationship as according to western theory, this is the app for you.
Still trying to wrap my head around it, but I can see that it will be worth it once I do.
Very interesting and usefull stuff! Many thanks for share. Can someone tell what apps are supporting midi out?
@MANUHZ hey there. What kind of midi out do you mean?
iRealB and Chordbot have excellent midi file export options. As does Suggester, but manipulation of it's file are very limited.
Sorry, what I mean is virtual midi out...for control other apps on my ipad...
Music Theory apps with virtual midi out? It might be best if you can explain a little about what you are hoping to be able to do.
I mean there are plenty of apps that will allow you to 'midi out' chord progressions. Learning the theory in a separate app would help you to come up with some useful chord progressions to take to those apps.
Although I don't own this....maybe Changeling Sequencer might do something like what you are after? https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/changeling-sequencer/id506664262?mt=8
Check the vids on youtube to see.
some excellent apps that will let you midi out chords...
SoundPrism Pro https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/soundprism-pro/id425733007?mt=8
Chordion https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/changeling-sequencer/id506664262?mt=8
there are many more
Prochords is worth a mention, recent update included midi out - both virtual and wireless if you want to play with vsts in your DAW
See
@trackwerker Exactly that is what I was looking for
Happy Days!
Look at this one too. Chordroid. Shows relationship between fret and keyboard. Has preset tunes in browser.
